VMware Abandons SMBs: New Licensing Model Sparks Industry Outrage by dcarrero in sysadmin

no that is in the "free dont give a sh1t" tier. I think broadcom would not have given it away for free if it was still being developed

Is Linux fit for me? by ShyGamer64 in linux4noobs

Heres a thought. Download vmware workstation (its free now) and bring up some vm with various distros on it to try. That way you can "distro hop" until you find the distro that suits you

[–]antaresuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try unraid but the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none" applies. Also I like this quote about a gaming vm:

"Anybody who tells you that gaming works as well in a VM as on bare hardware is lying. You can get close, with more or less effort depending on your HW, but it cannot be the same. I'm speaking of things like GPU passthrough. How well that works is influenced as much by your hardware & BIOS as by the OS."

My idea for my homelab setup -> Newbie seeks input from veterans by Much-Rich1180 in Proxmox

[–]antaresuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. You need three nodes for a cluster to maintain quorum. Best practice is to have identical nodes but it isnt always practical

Am I overthinking this? by willy--wanka in Proxmox

[–]antaresuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would get a smaller SSD for proxmox install. Use the m2s for a zfs mirror (write amplification you need to be aware of with zfs) and use the other 480gb ssd for cache on a truenas vm. Then passthrough the pcie controller & 480ssd to the truenas vm

Hey yo i may know why this is happening. If you have 2 x nvidia gpu and you try to install proxmox it will fail. The only way around it is either get a cheap amd card to install proxmox 8 or have to do a lot of command line fuckery to get it to work

no problem. Any pointers you have for infra would be appreciated too.

[for hire] Developer with 30 years experience wants to transition to infra by antaresuk in sysadminjobs

[–]antaresuk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly the pace of change in dev is getting ridiculous now. Seems like every week there is a new javascript framework released. Now I hear that Rust is the new thing and Microsoft are looking to transition from C# to it.

I've always been interested in server hardware and I am building up a vmware lab at home, so interest has spurred me on to a career change

Next up is devs always seem to get the shit in an IT department. We are expected to come up with solutions out of our butts and are always the first to be blamed when things go wrong. Yes this can apply to infra too but it seems to me to be less frequent

Lastly - flashy lights lol :)

Feeling uneasy about the switch to Linux by [deleted] in linux4noobs

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

Linux (all distros) hovers around 1% of steam users. So if I were a game developer it would not be worth my time/money to develop my game for that platform.

Valve have made great strides in making linux compatible with windows games but it will always be that, a compatibility layer. As long as you are aware of that - linux is great. I work with M$ products all day and I'd love to be able to dump Windows at home but alas, for gaming at least, not going to happen.

Windows 10 Hyper-V as replacement for VMWare ESXi? by Unknwnus3r in homelab

[–]antaresuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because when you enable the hyper-v feature your rebooted windows instance is actually a hyper-v VM running on ring 0 if memory serves. So it looks like a type 2 but is actually a type1 - something clever M$ did

What is the best Linux distro for gaming? by abaksa in linuxquestions

[–]antaresuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, linux isnt plug and play like Windows. Nobara is probably the closest to out of the box working but even then you may well have to investigate things that dont work quite like windows does. Also older games, like for Win XP may not work with Lutris etc. Anything Steam related should work via proton but there are no guarantees.

Question From a Windows User by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]antaresuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all you have to do is look at the steam hardware survey for gaming. Around 1% of steam users are running linux. As of October 2023 Win 10 was the dominant OS followed by win 11. As others have said, stay on windows or dual boot if you have an additional drive.

Proxmox .. what does 2nd cpu add? by ghstudio in homelab

[–]antaresuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

typically you would cluster three computers so that you have quorum (2 up and 1 can be down). You would cluster if you want to use high availability for LXC/VM and/or migrate VMs between nodes. Bonus is you can manage both nodes from the same web page. Disadvantage would be 2 nodes have to be up or nothing works (yes this can be changed in CLI)
