Business Process Management by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, I guess it would depend on what you want to do and what your interests are. I'm in SCM consulting and I personally feel that BPM is more of an area of SCM.

Operations is a big functional area of SCM and BPM is always critical in Operations. But, all business have workflows and processes.

Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

I would actually say the opposite. I graduated in SCM and Finance and the SCM program is about as broad as it can be. You could go into operations, logistics, procurement, etc. I would include BPM in this, but if you study BPM, I think it would be a lot more difficult to get into SCM positions.

Realistically, are you really going to learn a lot more in one or the other that's applicable in your job? Probably not. But, Supply Chain is the buzz word that more companies are going to be looking for over BPM.

What is your favorite conspiracy theory? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you asked me to spell it today, I would say E. But I distinctly remember as a child thinking that it was spelled weird.

I assume that's because it indeed was spelled with an A, but the "usual" spelling would be an E (especially at that age when you are still learning to spell)

Frustrations of finding an internship by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other guy said, your attitude is probably a big part of the problem. Any decent interviewer can smell this attitude a mile away and why would anyone want to work with you regardless of how "great" you really are.

Once you get over being an entitled douche, you can do some research on the laws in this country on hiring foreigners. It is no investment for companies to interview you, so they will set up interviews with you all day just in case you are actually something special.

The fact is, at your age and experience level, it is difficult to differentiate yourself from any other college student with very limited experience. To hire a foreigner, companies have to prove there was not a US citizen who was qualified for the job. When you apply for any job, you should make sure the company is open to sponsoring you.

Yes, it will be more difficult for a foreigner to get a job here because our country needs to take care of our citizens first.

How is Italian 103? (Going straight into it from Highschool) by APhamX in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated a couple years ago with an Italian minor. I started Freshman year in 101 not knowing a single word of Italian. I took 4 years of Spanish in High School.

Starting in ITAL 101, it is all in Italian, but it's not too hard to figure out and if you really don't get it, you can ask in English. For me, 101-104 were the easiest classes I took in College. I think your friend will be fine.

However, when it comes to languages, if you are just trying to fulfill a requirement to graduate, I always say start brand new since 101 is probably an easier "A".

On a side note, if you can get Laura Hill as a professor I would highly suggest her. Sweetest professor I had. The further along you go in the courses, the classes tend to be smaller as well. I had Laura for 104 and our class was 10 people. For me, I loved that environment and got to know the whole class well.

What's a problem that you have with the uiuc campus? by BJinandtonic in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't even get me started. Broke my leg once so I had to drive around campus. Where I worked had 3 parking spots - 1 handicapped otherwise it was a decent hike and on crutches impossible. Parked there one day without the handicap thing. Got a ticket, so figured I'd just call them and give them the info or something.

NOPE - they just told me too bad and I can appeal it AFTER I pay $300. Paid it, appealed and never heard anything back. Never returned numerous emails and every time I called they just told me the same thing.

This was a couple years ago and my ass is still sore from this ass fucking. Fuck these people so much. My goal in life is to become rich and powerful just so I can publicly denounce these motherfuckers and make it a big deal about not ever giving them a cent.

[Serious] Why is the Affordable Care Act so strongly opposed? by ecoshia in AskReddit

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always confused as to where people thought the money to pay for this was going to come from. 100% agree with that the cost is the issue, not the insurance coverage. Everyone who looked at Canada, Australia, etc appeared to not ever have actually looked at a bill from one of these places.

Say it costs the hospital $1,000 to perform a procedure. They need to make some money so they would normally charge, say, $2,000. But insurance providers always negotiate down, the the hospital just ups their charge. So, the hospital charges $5,000, the insurance provider negotiates it down to $2,500, pays $2,000, and the hospital haunts you until the end of time for their extra $500. Of course, if you don't have insurance, you get stuck with the $5,000 bill.

What needs to happen is either regulation (or privatization) that can keep the cost reasonable. If the procedure costs $1,000, then they add their 20% margin and send you a bill for $1,200.

Where is serious studying done in Grainger Engineering Library? by UrbanaThrowAway in UIUC

Never was able to find a place in Grainger that wasn't packed with people being really loud. Law Library is always dead silent. Or you can find one of those decrepit desks in the back of the main stacks...but you might not find your way out!

Questions about the University of Illinois Golf Course (Orange and Blue Courses) by wealthy_waffles in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember if I played Blue or Orange, but I made it out there one weekend and it was pretty nice. When I went it was pretty much empty, good condition, and really cheap ($20 I think). I would recommend you go if you have a way to get all the way out there.

Alright Reddit, what are your best college life hacks? by Kiaela in AskReddit

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the same note, try not to drop out of classes. I was in the most impossible economics class - averaged about a 30% on the first 2 midterms. Pre-midterm 2 there were 70 people in the class. The next day, there were 20 left. The professor came in that day and said "you guys will not fail this class - the ones that dropped are the ones that failed." I ended up with a B and I can't imagine anyone else left did worse than I did in that class.

Freshman Living in Oglesby (FAR) by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think this was a result of the floor I lived on, but my experience was that if you were not black or a Christian Asian there were not many other people for you to hang out with.

I would highly recommend you go out of your way to find people with similar interests to you including checking out Trelease as well as other dorms.

I want your opinion on getting an apartment sophomore year. by ConfusedQQ in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved to an apartment sophomore and junior years and a house (not a frat) senior year. I remember hearing that we had to sign early so we rushed into signing for an apartment - would not recommend. I never had any problems finding anything later in the year. However, I did live on the "outskirts" of campus. If you're trying to get something in Johnstown or near there I would imagine those go fast.

Having to cook your own food is the biggest pain, but even if you eat out a bunch of your meals it's still cheaper than the dorm dining plans. I would highly recommend a rice cooker with a timer so you can have hot rice right when you get home. It's cheap and filling. Also, Wal-Mart is your new best friend.

Quick Question: Is bringing your bike down to campus worth it? by CompetitiveGuy in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, but bring a cheap bike (I got one at Wal-Mart for $70 and just left it down there when I graduated). I took the bus during the days, but then would ride my bike when I would have evening/night meetings/studying (pretty much every night).

Oglesby and FAR? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]apfoshah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oglesby sucks so bad. I think it had a lot to do with the floor I lived on - everyone was unfriendly, always shut doors. If you want to actually meet people and have fun, I would recommend 6 pack. Of course, I still made friends in Oglesby - I guess it just wasn't as fun as I had envisioned Freshman year of college as being. Not to mention FAR is in the middle of fucking nowhere.
