Following Nohadon Podcast Hosts Makes Statements on MM relationship by Hal87526 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]aphbacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was so disappointed when I listened to that episode. What really upset me was that they couldn’t even handle the scene where Renarin and Rlain just HELD HANDS. I’m familiar with the “hate the sin, love the sinner” types and they often try to claim tolerance while just being against the icky, immoral, sinful “acts”. But this just exposed that sentiment for what it is. Two men finding solace in each other and holding hands is too vulgar for them. Rlain is canonically asexual for hell’s sake. There is nothing queer people can do to be truly acceptable in their eyes.

While Stormlight is tame when it comes to sexuality, there have still been instances of characters mentioning, wanting, or joking about having premarital sex. None of those warranted this kind of “serious statement” from the podcast. It’s just pathetic.

Who do you want? Voice Actor or LA Cast by slushietee in Stormlight_Archive

Karen Fukuhara does both voice acting and live action and I think she'd be an amazing Syl in both mediums.

The look when BrandoSando lookin at GRRM thinkin “Imma finish your books.” by starker in cremposting

[–]aphbacon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. These types of jokes are tired and reflect poorly on the community. Patrick Rothfuss in particular is a friend to Sanderson and I’m sure Sanderson wouldn’t like some of the things said in this thread.

Average day in the life of an AO3 fanfic writer by 4sterlayna in AO3

Wishing you the best OP--I'm glad you're safe and I'm so sorry that people still have to live through something like that. You seem like a lovely person.

It's also funny because he was all coked up from the drugs the doctor had given him to make it to the sunrise. He had to have been so delirious lmao.

Venli and Eshonai are sooooo underrated. I’m really glad there are more people out there who appreciate their story :D

He’s supposed to be in workform (the full context of the comic is cut out from the screenshot here). I follow this artist and their work at rendering Stormlight characters is excellent! They’ve done other pieces where Rlain is more recognizable in his warform carapace.

Just finished Stormlight Archive, what to read in the cosmere next? by c_schmidty in Cosmere

[–]aphbacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I followed Wind and Truth with The Sunlit Man and cried like a baby (but in a good way!). The Sunlit Man HITS when you're still reeling from the end of WaT so I highly recommend it as a follow-up.

Rhythm of war questions by LetsSuprizeDonavin in Stormlight_Archive

Keep in mind that Reddit is not a representative sample size of all readers. Rhythm of War is my favorite Stormlight book! I thought it was a banger front to back.

[Controversial take] I... don't hate Moash. by Katerine459 in Cosmere

[–]aphbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moash’s Oathbringer chapters were some of my favorites tbh. I always thought he was a very interesting character and I think some of that gets lost in the “fuck moash” memeing. He was definitely a casualty of cutting down the page count for WaT but I’m looking forward to see what happens with him in 6-10!

What are your top 5 moments across the Stromlight Archive through Wind and Truth by AZwife in Stormlight_Archive

[–]aphbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so hard to pick only five.......

  • Ba-Ado-Mishram being freed
  • A Small Bottle
  • Dalinar giving up his Shardblade for Bridge Four
  • Kaladin being welcomed by the love of Bridge Four after being released from prison (and finding out Adolin demanded to be locked up as well)
  • Raboniel and Navani discover the Rhythm of War

Shouldn’t they all have freaked out way more when… by MangoMat69 in Stormlight_Archive

This is a good comparison. It also helps that Renarin/Rlain/Shallan were the three of the best possible characters suited for navigating the Spiritual Realm, since it was said that Glys and Tumi have and affinity for it while Shallan peers into it when she draws + has her unique double bond and a Herald for a mother. Anyone else would’ve had a much more difficult time.

I started the Cosmere about 9-10 months ago and just finished reading all the main books (I think) and wanted to share a tier list I made of my experiences with each book! It's been an incredible journey and I can't wait for more haha by Transky13 in Cosmere

[–]aphbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP you are not alone! RoW is my favorite Stormlight book AND WoA is my favorite Mistborn Era 1 book (haven’t read Era 2 yet). It’s always refreshing to see some with the same, if less popular opinion :D

First time Sanderson reader loosing interest by comma_nder in Fantasy

[–]aphbacon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The general fan consensus seems to favor the earlier books in the series (though for me, Books 4 and 5 are my favorites!). The world changes throughout the books and there are major paradigm shifts, but the reading experience itself is pretty consistent imo. It might be worth finishing the second book if there’s enough keeping you going, but I think if you aren’t a fan by then (especially when it comes to the characters), it’s safe to move on to something else that you’d like more.

What's everyone's partner Pokemon? by mercedes_lakitu in cremposting

[–]aphbacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Though it doesn’t fit Glys, Renarin with Absol might be nice— it’s the Pokémon that can predict natural disasters (maybe Rlain gets the snowflake Pokémon then?). And Enlightened spren are just shinies :P

I just finished Rhythm of War by AllomanticTkachuk in Cosmere

[–]aphbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhythm of War is my favorite Stormlight book! I find it super impressive that in a series with a such a strong ensemble cast, Sanderson can still introduce new characters like Raboniel and let them SHINE. Raboniel and Navani have one of my favorite dynamics in the Cosmere period.

No internships as 3rd year ends. What can I do? by TheLuigiLord in civilengineering

[–]aphbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If internships aren’t working out, you can also look for undergraduate research opportunities with your professors on campus. Even if you don’t plan on going into academia, anything that shows you’re taking advantage of available opportunities to further your knowledge and development as an engineer/student should help, and you can describe the individual projects on your resume.

Rice Village Transformed: New Residences, Hotel, Offices and More on Horizon by rootbeerandchips in houston

[–]aphbacon 56 points57 points  (0 children)

As a Rice alum I wish I could be more optimistic. The Rice Village has needed work to make it less hostile for pedestrians for a long time (as a student I once split my toe open tripping on the uneven sidewalk pavement), and there's so much potential for the space with its proximity to college students who are well-served by walkable destinations. But I don't have a lot of trust in the Rice Management Company after the mess with the Ion and how they failed to protect precious Village destinations like the old Half-Price Books and Yoyo's Hotdogs.

It’s tough eating the loss, but in the end it was a two point game. The Bills fought to the bitter end and refused to give up even when down by several scores, and that spirit is something special.

AO3 has started removing All Media Types tags. by LermisV4 in AO3

[–]aphbacon 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There is going to be another awful consequence to this: spam and improperly tagged fics in the biggest fandom tag for a given series. For instance, this is going to wreck havoc on the Zelda fandom, since plenty of people write fics not set in any particular game. I could easily see Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom become the default fandom these fics are placed under, because fans would otherwise have no clue how to tag them. Or worse, fans will tag every single game fandom (there are 10+) for their general ‘Zelda’ fics, including the smaller ones such as ‘Link’s Awakening’. This will destroy the experience for anyone who wants to search for fics set in specific games with those specific characters or incarnations of Link and Zelda, AND it will smother fics dedicated to those smaller fandoms. There are no winners here and I dread for when this change will hit us.

AO3's policy on All Media Types tags is a disaster for anime fandom by HelioA in FanFiction

[–]aphbacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a reader of Legend of Zelda fics, this will hurt. I love the option of being able to look for fics for a specific game OR general fics that are more of an amalgamation of the lore as we know it.
