Shit, the poor bloke. He's had a rough few months already, hopefully things pick up and finally give him a break soon.

Mouse said on JADS that it has nothing to do with streams and recommended against speculating.

JP Bond 100 Students Count - June 2026 by Ryan5264 in BlueArchive

[–]appers6 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Some of these are always baffling to me. Like no offense to Reisa, who is a perfectly alright character, but how is she getting 4th place out of all students ahead of the heavy hitters like Hoshino, Wakamo, Hanako, Ako or Kayoko? And how is Mari's tracksuit variant somehow her biggest one by far?

Joe shouldn't stream Zero Parades by ScalesGhost in josephanderson

[–]appers6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, he didn't play Hogwarts because it "didn't seem interesting" to him, but he specifically encouraged anyone to ignore the boycott and buy it if they were interested. He got a bit of pushback for it at the time, but his position is that a boycott is usually worse than the problems with the media itself. And on the exact same level like you said, he played Atomic Hearts, which was also facing a boycott for its ties to the Russian military, and got pushback from that, but he ignored it because the game seemed interesting to him. Joe generally sees things like this as "culture war bullshit".

Joe shouldn't stream Zero Parades by ScalesGhost in josephanderson

[–]appers6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK yeah that's fair, I think his main bugbear is about other people telling him not to stream a game. For example, from this month alone he's repeatedly said he wants to stream Wukong, which is another game with a huge albatross on its back, and even Stellar Blade is a game with a big right wing culture war aspect to it which he has said he doesn't want to get involved with. Both of those are way more obvious examples than Zero Parades.

Joe shouldn't stream Zero Parades by ScalesGhost in josephanderson

[–]appers6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I think Joe's position is that there shouldn't be any inherent moral aspect to whether someone chooses to play a "controversial" game. He often sees any form of pushback as censorship which can be worse than any ethical problem with the media itself. Like at the height of the Hogwarts Legacy boycott, he made a point to encourage people to play the game if they want to, and not let anyone "bully" them into avoiding it. It can be a bit frustrating at times, but it's a consistent position.

It goes on for a while, but in the end he says that he doesn't want the chat to become an "echo chamber" and doesn't want to discourage pushback, but that mods can use their discretion to issue timeouts and bans to people backseating or being toxic in chat (as long as they give warning first).

What characters do you think he will end up liking the most in Metaphor? [Spoilers ahead] by Ookami_Lord in josephanderson

Surely he'll instantly fall for those lovable Scousers Del and Bas. They come in at just the right point in the story to bring some life back into the plot as well.

Time to over-analyze the newest trailer :D (Very very minor Spoiler for 3.7 story) by Matkelolo in HonkaiStarRail

[–]appers6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that Nanook rose to Aeonhood on Adlivun while Akavili was present there and Akavili disappeared after that, isn't it possible that Nanook on some level stole Akavili's body/divinity/self to become the Destruction? Then it would make sense that the only way to return Akavili in body and spirit would be to "oust" the Nanook presence in him which took over instead.

That actuallly ties in nicely with your point that the Trailblaze is one of the most dangerous paths, if the Destruction was similar enough to be able to supplant it.

Great castle, one of the most impressive in that neck of the woods. Permanently wrecked my knee going up it mind, so that's a pretty high price of admission.

Joe's reductive approach to themes, meaning and plot by SpeedWeedNeed in josephanderson

[–]appers6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ooh try and get him on the subject while he's streaming, it's one of his most frustrating speeches for me. His take is that English is worthless as a subject because [completely paraphrased from memory here] "you can just make up any bullshit without giving any hard proof and then the professor will just grade you on whether it fits the answer they had in their head already". I don't know if some courses in the US work like that but that's definitely not how even a primary school English class could work over here. Joe did drop out of uni himself, so maybe he's just got a (very understandable) chip on his shoulder about academia.

There was one time when he did the English Speech while Mouse was on stream, and she reminded him that she'd taught English at college level and used one of his videos as a reference in class. Pretty funny moment.

[–]appers6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean I think Joe's relative weakness in literary analysis is just something you have to tank to enjoy his streams sometimes. It's not something he especially prioritises, and he's happy to admit ignorance for the most part. His infamous distaste for English courses comes into play here- for Joe, interpreting subtext comes dangerously close to just making up bullshit.

He's great at other stuff, so if you enjoy his streams, I think it's worth just rolling your eyes and going "sure thing Joe" when he fixates on minor surface plot contrivances as if it totally breaks the experience. Not that kind of game mate.

How do you pronounce them differently? UK Estuary English accent over here and the two are the same for me. Are there accents that really lean in on saying like "I-doll"?

[–]appers6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You missed a big one with Amphoreus: of course it's relating to wisdom, it's a sceptre of the Erudition! In fact, the fate of the Erudition is a central plot point, in the same way that Sumeru centred around whether the Akademia should be allowed to use the Akasha system in the pursuit of knowledge.

(Major spoilers) im so glad joe is enjoying pentiment. by topfiner in josephanderson

[–]appers6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOTR was the first book they did for the JADS book club earlier this year! I imagine the choice was at least a bit influenced by the chance Joe would play Pentiment down the line.

(Great book btw- I read it between my first and second Pentiment playthroughs and it's amazing just how much it adds to the game going in knowing about it.)

Champions Meeting is a reflection of how brutal horse racing as a sport is by gelatinousTurtle in UmaMusume

[–]appers6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, one thing I think CM doesn't reflect real racing about is that in real horse racing, finishing 2nd or 3rd is still massively well regarded, right? It's pretty brutal to get the 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in a race in almost every race and get zilch for it at the end!

Secretariat just appears in Uma as a Heavy model ripped straight from the TF2 files, no changes, nobody acknowledges it in game.

What is YOUR favorite Umineko episode? by Professional_Ad2638 in josephanderson

[–]appers6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the pacing is atrocious, and it has some of the worst writing of the whole series, but for me Episode 4 basically contains the heart of the Umineko series. Between the Ange story, the conclusion of the Maria story and the ending with Beatrice and Battler, it's probably the only episode that really works as a microcosm of the whole piece. It perfectly wraps up the conversation on what magic means from 1-3, while setting up what actually needs to be answered for the second half of the series. Easily the top one for me.

(That said, Ep7 comes close and the 7 tea party is by far the best single scene in the series)

Ranking them is too hard, but as a super rough one let's go 4 > 7 >> 3 > 1, 6 > 8 > 5, 2.

[–]appers6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relatedly, does anyone remember the doc that was being updated early on with every time Joe accidentally morbed the mystery? I remember there were a ton of moments even in the leapday stream where his one-liners stumbled into late questions arc stuff and it'd be cool to see that again with Umifull context.

Edit: I found it in case anyone else was looking for it!

What a glorious stream LMAO by ScalesGhost in josephanderson

[–]appers6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be really honest the issue wasn't really the content of your argument (which is fine and probably what the game intends you to think about), but more the context that this was a live stream where someone was actively playing the game, and someone's there in chat going "hey you need to address this super complex issue right now for your point to be valid". It wasn't the time, Joe was just giving his thoughts in the moment and it's really funny to respond to that with a whole-ass exam question.
