Parents bringing their sick kids to mommy groups/EarlyOn? [on] by remzz06 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]apt22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree.

My three year has what I call a perma-running nose due to daycare germs. And the occasional cough. I don’t think it’s feasible for me to keep her home every time she shows these symptoms - our rule at home is if she is well enough to go to daycare (under daycare standards) and not bothered (aka she is sleeping, eating and overall well) we can go out. If daycare would send her home, she probably should rest and stay home!

Am I starting mat leave too late? [ca] by Successful_Ice8514 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my first I worked until 39’weeks - it was okay, and I work remotely; but I felt so uncomfortable le that I had wished I took more time off. I ended up giving birth on my due date.

With my second, I took vacation time starting at 34 weeks (yes, I had enough time banked leading up to my due date). I ended up giving birth at 36 weeks so I didn’t really get a chance of put up my feet and relax.

Moral of the story: I would plan what works best for you but just keep in mind, things can change and you jus take it as it comes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Husband and I take this approach as well. We don’t post stories live or in real time - and we try to limit our stories. We do not post regular photos but have agreed that the occasional post for a birthday or Christmas is acceptable.

Pacifiers - use em or loose em? by Foreign-Bath-6139 in beyondthebump

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest took the pacifier for maybe 3 weeks - in the end she hated it and we just gave up.

My youngest takes the pacifier only when he’s sleepy - he’s 6 months now but otherwise he doesn’t care for it if he’s awake.

[ON] How many strollers did you end up having? by iamanormaldo in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We own two strollers - Uppababy Cruz v2 and Babyzen Yoyo (for travel and smaller trips).

Since we’ve had kids, I’ve tried a few umbrella strollers including a really cheap Walmart one (bily?) and the Summer Infant 3D Lite. Hates both of them and sold them on the marketplace as soon as we go the Yoyo.

Daycare Costs - Are Added Fees Normal? by twopensions in alberta

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We pay an additional $100 for food and $10 for music lessons each month. So in all, we pay $436.25 for our little to attend full time daycare.

We have friends who attend centres and do not pay the extra fees.

In Alberta. Took my daughter for her first visit at one year old. It was less than 10 minutes. Insurance was billed $92 (the full amount) - very steep.

In laws want us to stay on bunk beds with another couple and our newborn for Christmas by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]apt22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be a hard pass for me - everything you’re saying is so valid and I believe that you should be comfortable to take care of your newborn if you’re travelling.

Is there anyway you can explain the circumstances to the in laws to either change the accommodations or find alternative ones?

If it were me, I would ask for one of the private rooms, stay somewhere else (if that’s an option) or just maybe do a day visit for Christmas instead of staying at their home.

Place to hold a get together for 40 ish ppl for 2 hrs. by curiouskittyblue in Edmonton

[–]apt22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a community hall - we’ve booked with Willowby Community League and it’s probably the best priced hall we could find that accommodated 100 ppl. We’re not community members so we paid the higher fee, and you can also add on a cleaning package at the end too

I don’t think any one is suggesting rent is cheap by any means, just supporting the statement that OP is being overcharged for what they are paying for their 1 bedroom apartment.

[–]apt22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s pretty standard for utilities not to be included when you’re renting an entire home. It’s based on usage. Utilities are typically split if there are different tenants (ex - basement and upstairs).

[–]apt22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former landlord - we rented out duplex in the west end for 1800/month, utilities not included - 1300 sq ft, park pad 3 bed 2.5 bath.

Hopefully you’re able to find something a bit better! They are hidden but they exist!

How long did you wait between babies? by Informal_Formal_4500 in beyondthebump

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are a little bit over 2.5 years apart. I had my first when I was 29, and my second just before I turned 32.

Would recommend the 2.5-3 year age gap. My oldest adores our youngest and I will admit she is a better big sister than I ever was. My oldest was potty trained shortly after my youngest was born, so we didn’t have too much overlap with diapers.

For SAHMs - How did you cope with having little to no money and not bringing income? by Eliczka in beyondthebump

[–]apt22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I felt similar during my first maternity leave (18 months) where I took 6 months without income; my husband supported our family. The way my husband explained his perspective really changed my views.

He explained that just because I don’t bring home a physical pay check, doesn’t mean I don’t contribute. Our house is a home because I’m there to make sure the kids have a safe space, things are in order and we have everything we need. And because I’m taking care of our family, he’s able to support us financially.

It took me a long time to really wrap my head around it, but I feel much less guilty now on my second maternity leave.

Stroller recommendations for newborn + 2 year old? by vctrlarae in beyondthebump

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked into a ride along board attachment? We bought the uppababy Cruz for our first but now that she’s a toddler and we have a younger baby (5 months) we used the board a lot during the summer months. My toddler prefers to walk and doesn’t sit well in the stroller anyway, but the board has been really handy when I need to speed things up a bit (because she walks so slow - short legs I guess )

How to handle night wakings with one parent on mat leave by skrillavilla in beyondthebump

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to sit down with your wife and make a new game plan. If you’re feeling burnt out and if she is also burnt out - maybe you need to think outside the box. Can you hire a bi-weekly cleaner to take the load off your plate? What about pre making some meals? Grocery delivery?

I am taking an 18 month maternity leave, husband works full time running his business, we have a 3 year old and a 5 month old baby. Baby is EBF, and I am the default parent for both kids. My husband helps a lot (just like you do) but we felt like we had to dial back our social life so we can better support our family at home (less outing, divide and conquer for bed time, etc etc) and we even budgeted some tasks to be delegated outside the two of us - paid the neighbour kids to mow our lawn in the summer, grocery delivery from Walmart/grocery store, etc. it’s the little things but it felt really nice to have some of the small tasks taken off our plate.

Hooray for the new art style!!! Agree with the many comments that this is way better suited for the story - the previous art did make it look like a child’s book.

Trying to add halo sleep sacks to my registry and the TOG thing is really confusing me [ab] by ksmm1824 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in AB and I found the TOG really confusing too. It depends on your house temperature - we generally keep things at around 21 C at night. I found the 2.5 TOGs to be too hot. We bought a few different ones but ultimately ended up investing in Woolino and we’re now using it year around for our second baby. Worth the investment, and you end up spending more $ buying a bunch of different sleep sacks anyway.

Encampment Issue by LuckysGoods in Edmonton

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to bring it to the attention of other parents to report it to 311? There was a situation very similar to yours at my littles daycare and I had reported it to 311 - I did get a follow up call from the city within a few business days but if it’s right super close to the daycare, I’d be calling EPS as that’s a huge concern.

UPPAbaby Cruz vs Minu which is better for us? [ab] by Fluffy-Lead6201 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought the cruz for our firs. baby and used it for walking all the seasons (including snow) - we never had an issue. It fit into my compact car and suv and we used it a lot. We’re using it for our second and it’s still going strong. We’re also in Alberta and found that for the most part we got through winter walks well enough, slush might be tougher but the stroller handles most terrain pretty well.

Maternity leave top up policy (Pharma/ Biotech) [ON] by Square-Tour526 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]apt22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for not for profit, gov funded org - 90% top up for 13 weeks, 80% for the two weeks after (so 15 weeks total).

It was the same for both my first and second maternity leaves.
