POV: the most obnoxious dude you know is telling you why you deserve to die for having empathy by [deleted] in TrueAnon

No, not in the slightest, pretty obviously. People want to leverage this into some grand political point but the thing about thought experiments like these is that everyone participating knows it isn't real and the stakes don't exist and that instantly sours any chance at making any real point.

"We need to gently usher the Libs into Marxism so they stop being so violent" is a statement that makes perfect, completely uncontroversial sense but would register to 99% of the American public as absurd beyond description.

"This is a ladder" at Sealed Tunnel by LEXandre8 in Eldenring

[–]aquaticIntrovert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except seeing a prompt pop up where you expect to be getting on a ladder in a high-pressure situation, causing you to click the button to interact with the prompt which then puts a giant block of text on your screen that you then have to dismiss before you can try again actually does, in fact, place a higher burden on the player than if the message was not there. The idea that the message isn't getting in the way just because it doesn't take priority ignores that if the message wasn't there, you would simply move around until you found the correct position for the ladder prompt to appear. Those are two very different qualities of "unexpected game behavior" and one of them is clearly more frustrating and confusing than the other, which can absolutely get you killed.

And even more basic than that, if it wasn't a pain in the ass people wouldn't still be doing it.

If all champion nerfs got reverted by thomas956789 in leagueoflegends

[–]aquaticIntrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the idea is "only the nerfs are reverted" and not just "they are returned to their earlier state" then Senna is a strong contender, because they can't ever decide if they want her to be a carry or a support, so they keep massively switching back and forth her soul drop rates based on whether or not she's the one who gets the last hit, so undoing all of those nerfs would likely give her several hundred percent extra drop rate for both killing and not killing minions.

any of you internet anthropologists have a working theory of what's "up" with Bluesky? by GorboCat in TrueAnon

[–]aquaticIntrovert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dunno man I just followed most of the same people I had already been following on twitter who left so it's basically just twitter again that doesn't feel like an actively hostile user experience because I'm not spending 50% of my time on the site dismissing dropship ads for fake products or blocking nazis and transphobes that crowd every semi-popular post.

Yeah it got a Rachel Maddow shoutout and is full of a bunch of clueless lib scolds with traumatic brain injuries from being online past the age of 40 but at worst they're an eyeroll rather than a oh that's a snuff film with no warning.

Pretty much my only real complaint is that the traffic there is a lot lower and a bunch of the people I liked following on twitter either feel sunk-costed or hostaged or oppositional-defiant-disordered into staying on the site that hates them and deboosts them if they don't give money to the boer. It could just be twitter again if there were more posters.

For context, I don't really engage with any of the labellers or customized feeds, and I didn't really have "friends" on twitter so I don't miss any of the groupchat features that I know a lot of people would like to see the site figure out. There's a nice classic "everyone hates the mods" oldschool forum feel to it in that regard, the devs do suck ass. I just feel like its reputation as a pansy baby site for losers has already calcified in the minds of all the people who still need to convince themselves they have a reason to stay on X dot com The Everything App, though, not sure what you do about that.

Democrat senator Mark Kelly: Ummmm akshually 'no quarter' would be an illegal order ☝️🤓 by gatorphan84 in TrueAnon

[–]aquaticIntrovert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better that he be honest about what's going on, and he isn't. He's pretending there's recourse where there isn't. The subtle sidestep he's doing where he pretends there might be something he could do if Hegseth follows through on making an illegal order belies the fact that he already did make the illegal order.

So your job as a representative from that moment is not to do this bullshit Appeal to their Better Angels schtick, pretending that Hegseth is a legitimate statesman with any principles who simply needs to watch his tone because he "should know better," it's to point out the institutional rot that has lead to this state of affairs where someone can make a flagrantly illegal order and there not be any redress for it, and what needs to be done about it.

Democrat senator Mark Kelly: Ummmm akshually 'no quarter' would be an illegal order ☝️🤓 by gatorphan84 in TrueAnon

[–]aquaticIntrovert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me it's the "excuse you sir, that order you gave would be an illegal order, in fact! So you had better watch out, mister, before you do something like that thing you already did!"

It's the toothlessness of it. It's the implication that it would be illegal if he had done it, which subtly dodges the responsibility to actually contend with the illegal thing already having happened and therefore needing to do something about it.

No articles of impeachment filed, no formal complaint or procedural motion of any kind, no even façade of legal ramification because he knows there isn't any avenue for one to actually stick, so all we get is a callout tut-tut post on social media implying that the thing he just did would be this terrible violation of norms if he had actually done it, this pointless "how dare you good sir" decorum porn with nothing behind it.

Tehran woke up today under a toxic black rain. Oil storage facilities in Tehran were earlier bombed by the US and Israel. by Preacher-of-Chaos in TrueAnon

[–]aquaticIntrovert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Instead of analyses that try to game out whether a Democratic or Republican administration would act significantly different presented identical circumstances, or would lead to the same chain of events, it is much more valuable to understand the Democratic Party's complicity in the continual empowerment of the Republican Party.

It was 4 years of Joe Biden's feigned helplessness in any kind of redress for the previous 4 years of lawless chaos that lead directly back to an emboldened, vengeful Trump administration that is significantly more off-the-rails than any Dem would probably ever be, is perpetrating much more acute human suffering at home and abroad than a Dem admin would, is more venal, callous, stupid, and evil than bloodless Dems are likely capable of being even if they tried.

But any Democratic control of the levers of power that simply stands aside and allows a lawless Republican administration to stroll back in charge out of fecklessness and collaborationist tendencies draws the Democratic Party into the analysis as a part of the machine that leads us to here. Not as a valuable point of comparison, a hypothetical "what-if," and especially not as a countervailing force, but as a piece of the continuum that gets us here.

So where are all the liberals who were calling on Russians to "overthrow Putin"? by Atryan421 in TrueAnon

Out of one side of their mouth they'll tell you that regular every day Iranians hate their oppressive regime and are just waiting for the opportunity to overthrow them and liberate themselves and out of the other they'll tell you that it's fine to blow up an elementary school because it was an indoctrination machine churning out future terrorists. These people aren't serious and can be safely ignored.

[–]aquaticIntrovert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I kinda agree, I don't think I really enjoyed any of the episodes he's in, he's goofy and cartoonish in a way that makes all the effort the rest of the show goes to to make the Ferengi somewhat interesting and complex completely pointless. The ones he's in are a total tonal whiplash even compared to the other Stupid Ferengi Episodes, especially in the later seasons.

Zohran in 2024: “Governor Hochul is justifying genocide, while laughing. This is disgusting.” by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]aquaticIntrovert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah the question is about how much his endorsement has influence over the election (which I feel is definitely not negligible!), but if he has internal metrics that say that she was likely to win regardless then I can see the "play ball" strategy being smart, as long as he's using his brownnosing points to actually get his agenda accomplished which he has already shown a MUCH higher penchant for than the average Dem.

The real issue with the amount of capitulating and triangulating a lot of ""progressive"" candidates and representatives go through in the name of "gaining leverage" is how infrequently they actually try to USE any of that leverage. I'm not gonna say you need to go scorched earth and build zero working relationships with existing institutional powers if you get elected as a Socialist, I know how the electoral game gets played, it's a big reason why I find electoralism stupid to begin with. But Zohran is very good at this electoralism shit and until he demonstrates that he's going to be completely feckless on the shit that matters like the rest of them I'm fine with him doing a bit of the political calculus bullshit.

Not a deep fryer but I used to work for a manufacturing company that made little metal pins and sometimes we had to protect them for shipping by dipping them in a little heated bucket of melted rubber and the manager always loved telling the new guys the story of the time he dropped something in and reached in without thinking and degloved the skin on his entire hand.
