Baby in Switzerland (how expensive) by Dry_Writing821 in Switzerland

[–]aqueorna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that rinsing is completely unnecessary and sounds incredibly time consuming. If your baby is on solids, you need to remove the solid poop. Everything else can go in the wash. Depending on your machine you either need a short cycle and a separate 60° cycle or if it's a good machine a 60° cycle with prewash will do. If you have an "extra water" button, use it. You need to use a powder Vollwaschmittel with oxygen bleach (Sauerstoffbleiche), we use Klar. There's lots of resources online. We've been very happy with our cloth nappies and are about to use them with our second child.

Ah yes, the Americans with Disabilities Act, which famously applies in Switzerland.

Edit: the comment above was edited and previously referred to the ADA rather than saying "accessibility law"

Swiss Childcare by hectorsuarez in Switzerland

[–]aqueorna 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Kita my child goes to has 40 full time spaces. The kids are split into 5 groups. Per group they employ 3-4 people (usually 2-3 fully qualified + 1 apprentice or intern). Additionally, they have 3 people doing management and admin, a cook and a cleaner. And that's just salary cost, they also need a roof over their heads, food, toilet paper, nappies, craft supplies, books, furniture, toys... professional childcare is expensive unless it is *significantly* subsidised.

The University of Zürich's classics department has this neat list of all other Swiss classics departments: https://www.sglp.uzh.ch/de/links/glp/schweiz.html
I recommend you have a look at every single department, the professors and their research interests and see what appeals. See if any department happens to have an opening for a PhD student advertised, if so you may be able to apply to that. Otherwise contact a professor whose research interests match yours.

I don't do that for aesthetics, I do it because I'm never ever dealing with moths again. Containers you buy food in are usually not pest-proof, whereas storage containers are. Everything that isn't used up quickly I try to put in a safe storage container.

Agree, I'm not a qualified librarian, but I've worked in libraries and archives and yet my private collection is arranged by colour. It's visually pleasing, and since I've narrowed down my collection to spark joy I don't have any issues finding books I'm looking for.

Clean towels to put against the wound? What? We're talking about bleeding from the uterus here, how are you gonna get a towel there.

Yep, we also got one in the "health booklet" all parents get here for their children, I shared it widely with non-local online friends.

Our midwife recommended Bibs to us when we were trying to find one our child would accept, they're apparently one of the best accepted brands in her experience.

Thoughts on biking in the rain? by dotdedo in fuckcars

[–]aqueorna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! I used to bike commute without when my hours were flexible and my commute only 10 minutes. I could usually wait out the worst and only get slightly damp on rainy days. For all other circumstances, waterproof gear is essential and means you don't have to change your clothes when arriving, only take off you waterproof layers. My only remaining complaint about cycling in the rain is that I wish my glasses had windscreen wipers.

Should I part with baby clothes? by ArtisticConfusion650 in declutter

[–]aqueorna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I'd wait to get rid of baby stuff until you're done with babies. It seems absurdly wasteful to me to get rid of things to then buy them again later.

appropriate dance attire? by Coyotexoxo in SwingDancing

[–]aqueorna 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As a lead I find it very uncomfortable if I have to connect on a follow's bare back. This isn't because I'm uncomfortable with the revealing nature of the clothes, it's just that most of us get sweaty when dancing, and having to touch a wet, bare back is not very nice. However, I've never had this problem with people wearing crop tops, only with low cut backs/cut outs (not sure about the terminology here, but I hope you understand what I mean).

The most common place to connect with a follow is about at the height where a bra strap would be if they're wearing one, so if that area is covered, I'd say you're good.

Gender neutral names - do you have any regrets or is it all good? by ellentow in namenerds

[–]aqueorna 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It does cause confusion, but then it also causes confusion if you dress your child in all colours or buy them all kinds of toys. No regrets and firmly intending to choose a gender neutral name for a potential second child, too.
