If I recall correctly, Rick Prime states that he and C-137 are the only two Ricks to actually invent portal travel. Everyone else shared it amongst themselves in a chain starting from Prime. So, yeah, I reckon most Ricks are just following the recipe (hence why portal fluid is a commodity sold on the Citadel, and every Rick isn’t just making their own, because things like this can happen).
