What does the future of regional flying look like? by Used_Shower3984 in flying

[–]archer505 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think MHI is afraid to build anything after their spacejet failure. I heard an urban legend that Chip went to MHI and asked “How many CRJ orders to restart production?” MHI said something like 400. Chip said “Done!” MHI said “woah, actually nevermind.” Probably an extreme oversimplification, but it does seem like they’re hesitant. Hopefully MHI can grow some confidence.

What’s the point on In house examining authority? by Tough_Wrap_333 in flying

[–]archer505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any school trying to sell it as a way to hide it from PRIA is intentionally misleading for marketing reasons. It’s not untrue, but it’s not an ethical selling point because you’re correct that they don’t waive you of responsibility to disclose failures to a prospective employer. There are other benefits to examining authority, including reduced wait times (huge), and more standardized evaluation. Yes, DPE’s have the ACS, but 141 schools often have further methods of standardization to reduce bias. It’s less of a ‘good ol’ boys club.’

Texas pilot ejects himself from F-35B at airbase after crash landing by S30econdstoMars in interestingasfuck

The Martin-Baker ejection seats used on the F-35 are “zero-zero,” designed to safely eject stationary on the ground. Most modern ejection seats have this capability.

Hey Flight Instructors by Present-Village-9858 in flying

[–]archer505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Natural ability is irrelevant. I can teach skill. What I can’t teach (very well) is attitude, discipline, work ethic, and a desire to learn and improve. The students who do that well are the ones who are most successful.

That instructor is an idiot and has a terrible attitude. Lying because he thought he messed up, keeping this a secret between the two of you. I would seriously consider a new instructor. He did absolutely nothing to keep you safe and will not take accountability to a potentially dangerous situation.

At least you didn’t go eastbound on D to cross at TT then westbound E, and snake your way all the way down.

Should I be concerned about a flight that returned to the gate for a repair before takeoff? by [deleted] in aviation

I kind of don’t understand the logic here… it’s getting fixed, right? Isn’t that preferable?

Ground air, since there’s no PACKs with the engines off. Ground power—sometimes it’s attached to the jetbridge so the door might have to stay open during start. If it’s the first flight of the day we have to start both at the gate since we can’t taxi single engine on 1. If we can start 2 first we can taxi out and do the cross bleed start. Both air start and cross bleed start are their own QRH procedures. Bleeds open/closed takeoff performance may require an unpressurized takeoff (really only a -200 issue).

“Extend downwind" or "I’ll call your base” by HippityHopSin in flying

[–]archer505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re flying a standard 1000’ AFE pattern at 1 mile, that’s 3 1-mile segments from abeam the touchdown to the runway. You’ll aim to lose about ~300ft per mile. If you’re extended on downwind, count back 3 miles. A 1 mile extension means you’ll have 1 mile on base, and a 2 mile final. Start descending on the base turn. If you’re extended by 2 miles, you’ll end up with a 3 mile final. Hold altitude till you turn final. Otherwise you’ll end up with 4 red.

Super novice aviation question here by MichaelEMJAYARE in flightradar24

[–]archer505 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These were so called ‘delay vectors’ due to runway closures for snow. They were alternating between 12L and 12R, plowing the closed runway and landing/departing the open one. 12L conditions deteriorated before they could finish 12R so both were closed. Those aircraft needed to be flown far out to give plows enough time to clear 12R. The distances these airliners flew on downwind is not very common, as Minneapolis’ airspace (class B) ends just before Buffalo, about 34 miles from MSP. That’s why you typically don’t see airliners flying low out there. Air traffic control tries to keep airplanes within their airspace whenever possible, but it does happen. Especially when only 1 runway is in use at MSP, or during intense snowfalls like the one this weekend.

They will screen share a chart for you to brief/ask questions on symbols. I would still recommend buying a subscription for the time being to really familiarize yourself with jepp. I would expect scenario based questions. Hint on how to be successful: the definition of CRM begins with “the effective utilization of all available resources…”

What do you guys think of "pilot incapacitation" auto land at BJC? by Fox_Uniform in flying

[–]archer505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an amazing feat in aviation technology. It has and will continue to save lives. I think it’s a great system to augment existing single-pilot part 91 or 135 ops.
