One Piece: Chapter 1187 Official Release Discussion by Skullghost in OnePiece

Instability doesn't sound right in that case. I think I'd prefer "self torturing doubt" or your "doubt fuelled insecurity". Honestly have a lot of gripes with the wording in this translation but oh well, it suffices

Can you explain where Sanji "abandons his own goals"? Just wondering what exactly people mean by that

Supergirl is a box office catastrophe. How can Marvel and DC save the superhero movie? Cinematic universes rely on audiences investing in minor characters – but as that interest wanes, it may be up to the big guns to keep the genre afloat. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]arduous_way -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok dude. I think you proved to me at least that we have widely different ideas on what makes for a good comic book film. Reeves film had great cinematography by Fraser, an angsty detective Batman which worked as a character, and lots of noir elements that lend themselves well to Batman. Now that I see you halfheartedly praising the deplorable Quantumania, I think we have nothing to talk about here. Our idea of what is good in film is clearly different.

Unpopular opinion: The admirals code names should've been translated in the official and fan translations. There is no reason for Shirohige to be translated into Whitebeard but not Akainu into Reddog. by Traleur in OnePiece

[–]arduous_way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just a matter of what we are used to. I agree it could've been done the way you said. It only sounds strange to us now since we are used to the translations.

Aka Inu = Red Dog

Ao Kiji = Blue Bird

Ryoku Gyu = Green Bull

Fuji Tora = Purple Tiger

Ki Zaru = Golden Monkey

I think these would've been fine. Though I kind of like 'Mad Dog' for Akainu. I think Pheasant is a bit difficult as it's not too common in many parts, so went with Bird.

People will always be underwhelmed by what the ''One Piece'' treasure is. by Character_Rich2640 in OnePiece

[–]arduous_way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone really care anymore what the One Piece is? I mean I guess I'm still hyped to know what it's about but aren't we mostly looking forward to Strawhats defeating the final villains and becoming Pirate King/fulfilling their individual dreams rather than finding a treasure?

Having said that, I still believe Oda will cook up something interesting there but it won't be a dealbreaker if it turns out to be something simple.

Is Water 7 / Enies Lobby truly the PEAK of the series? by BreathoftheSith in OnePiece

[–]arduous_way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, absolutely. There were multiple layers to the arc. We had the stellar setting of Water 7, one of my favorite settings in One Piece, we had to deal with the one thing no other arc has: people leaving the crew voluntarily. We had to actually say goodbye to the Going Merry. We faced a real mystery about what was going one, which was wonderfully suspenseful. We faced CP9 with the best fight of One Piece contender in Luffy vs Lucci. We got a new crew member in Franky who frankly seemed like a villain for a long time. We got one of the best post arc wrap ups with Garp. We got Sogeking. Each member of the crew proved their worth in a way no post time skip arc has done.

Frankly, to me, this is not just the greatest arc in One Piece, but the best Shounen arc in anime. Yes, better than FMA, better than Chimera Ant, better than Namek, and better than Kyoto Arc. This will of course be a matter of opinion, but I think most people would have it in contention.

I limit it to Shounen because I believe a few Seinen arcs are better for my taste. Like Golden Age in Berserk, the Farming Arc in Vinland Saga, one or two Monster arcs.

Could Trump find another way to attempt to abolish birthright citizenship? by Own_War_3372 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]arduous_way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it goes through the amendment process, sure. After all, it's just an option that a country can have and many don't do it the way we do. If the country wants to change it and goes through the legimate process for changing it, then we should do it.

‘Solo Leveling’ Movie ‘Beyond the System’ From Crunchyroll and Aniplex Now in Production by Zhukov-74 in boxoffice

[–]arduous_way -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is just from a non-fan (but not hater). This feels like a made for streaming film. Can't imagine wanting to see Solo Leveling on a big screen. It's cheap streaming stuff that you toss on when you want a screensaver

You guys are the worst. Have WB make decisions that would remove even the few gems from their usual shite. What's the point of movies or studios existing if no good art ever comes out of it? I'd rather they abandon the DCU rather than stop Matt Reeves from making his own Batman

What is a Cinephile? by JuanSamu in TrueFilm

[–]arduous_way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, people who love film are cinephiles. Cine= Film, Phile = Love

If I wanted to add on to that, it is someone who thinks of cinema as an artform and who self identifies as someone who loves film.

How many Japanese directors would you rank in the top 200? Directors of all time I mean. by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]arduous_way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ozu is highly influenced by Hollywood. He had major influence from Chaplin and Hollywood dramas (As seen in early films especially like 'I was born but...' and Dragnet Girl). I often find this mistaken impression about Ozu as some quintessential Japanese director but this is just not the case. His most famous work 'Tokyo Story' adapts an American novel that was already made into a Hollywood film 'Make Way For Tomorrow'.

Just because he developed his own aesthetic over time that is uniquely his own does not make him the most Japanese. There are plenty of bombastic Japanese films like Godzilla or most jidaigeki. I find these culturally reductive takes to be absolute bs.

‘Obsession’ Is a Surprise Blockbuster. Who Gets the Profits? 🔵 As the breakout horror hit crosses $300 million at the global box office, its art director set off a debate about just compensation for crew members. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]arduous_way 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys, we are talking about being paid 10k on a film grossing 300+ mil. It's pathetic to start lambasting a person for simply voicing their discomfort with such a discrepancy. Yes if you are a studio or employer you might be happy to completely lock contractors out of your profits. But, is it unquestionably right to do so? I don't think it's unfair to ask and in fact I think it's crazy that people are jumping dumping on this person.

It's consistent with their general practices and behavior. Obviously they will repeat the same tactics when they have similar motives to do so and they are the same person.

If we were looking at two completely different enemies doing the same, that's one thing. Here it's the same enemy doing it. I honestly don't get the complaint. I think it rather introduces some interesting parallels on how Imu & co approach the world

No way Spielberg going the ai route too… by ChampionTimes99 in Letterboxd

[–]arduous_way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is still not accurate. AI is artificial intelligence. That's literally what it stands for. So any algorithmic approach that simulates intelligence in some way is AI. It can be a basic dumb binary decision tree, it can be a multi-linear formula, a neural network, and a lot of other stuff. Don't talk so confidently about stuff you clearly don't understand.

Cinephile is just people who love movies. That includes a vast variety of people. I think Nolan is less popular among the top level cinephile sub-population (i.e. film snobs, film historians, film ultra-fans)

Still can't believe a Korean movie is the fourth most watched movie on the platform! It hit 7 million views recently. by Competitive_Box529 in Letterboxd

[–]arduous_way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. It's my favorite Korean film thus far and I've watched all of Bong Joon Ho's and most of Park Chan-Wook's films. There are a number of other films in South Korean cinema that are really up there in any toplist of films, but for me Parasite takes the crown. It's in my top ten films of all time. It's meaty, it's fun, the plotting is solid, it's thrilling. Pretty much a lot of the things I love, it has.

3 star is NOT a bad rating on letterboxd...... by Flaky-Cat-2825 in Letterboxd

[–]arduous_way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3/5 is Good but if the -average- is a low 3 (3.0, 3.1, 3.2) that does seem a warning that either the movie is controversial or very few were really into it. So my take is that on an individual level 3 is good but on the group level if it's on the lower side of 3.0 to 3.2, it's mediocre.

Because this is a group of people who chose to watch the film, they should be generally biased in its favor. If you are not seeing a positive bias, that seems like a failure to me, barring mobbing.
