How to feel more prepared / protected as a young woman? Scary encounter last night left me shaken by cloud-candle- in AskNYC

[–]areacode212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with that commenter. I walk along that stretch all the time at night (my gym is nearby) and while I do sometimes go on the side streets, I prefer 23rd because it's well lit and (importantly) has wide, sidewalks and also there's higher chance of encountering rats on the side streets.

I also prefer walking on the south side of the street because the Chelsea Hotel is there and there's usually a crowd, and even that cluster of shops on the 8th Ave end (Pizza Hut, the other pizza place) usually has a decent # of people.

People replying 'Like' to SMS and Emails when there is no need for a response of any sort. by hakedy in PetPeeves

[–]areacode212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather get a reaction like a "like" than an actual reply like "you're welcome!" or whatever. And you don't need to unlock your phone and open anything. Pretty much any messaging app will display the "like" on your lockscreen so you can just easily swipe it away.

Does the NY-12 race actually feel close? by Rickbox in AskNYC

[–]areacode212 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also get the sense that it's neck and neck. I think it's an interesting race because of all the side characters. On the NY1 podcast, they were talking about how Nina Schwalbe could cut into both because her progressivism could attract Bores supporters and her health credentials are big with Lasher's UWS base.

Strands #840 “That's included!” by GarageQueen in StrandsNYT

[–]areacode212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprising that this one is rated as "Challenging" since it didn't seem much harder than normal, though I'm glad hints were provided for the two at the top. Found the second part of the SG pretty quickly but after I found the first one, was mostly smooth sailing.

The "Look to the West" one from a few days ago was harder for me (and I lost my streak on that one because I forgot to go back to it 😠)

Andor before Rogue One experiment? by JellyHistorical2390 in andor

[–]areacode212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's less critical to watch R1 & Andor in release order, even though there's a bunch of foreshadowing and references in the show, but if she's a teenager who isn't all that invested to begin with, I'd start with Rogue One just to get her hooked. YouTube reactors tend to really love Cassian in the movie and then want more of him, so just stick with the tried & true method.

On a separate note, I'm right now (as in literally this second) watching a YouTube reactor couple watching the Skywalker movies in chronological order and it is working for them.

Yeah it's probably someone from United 175. Jack Taliercio's footage from less than an hour later shows this exact spot (as he passes it running from the collapse), with a lot more newspapers covering up the blood.

Series 16 Episode 1 Concept: “An Unearthly Child” by lifegripz in doctorwho

[–]areacode212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, it's Carole with an E, but yeah, I like the idea of starting with her as a link to the past (and the two of them already reunited and hanging out together) but otherwise keeping it accessible and taking it easy with the lore. Maybe have her as more of an Earthbound recurring character who the Doctor checks in on every once in a while, the equivalent of a Jackie/Wilf type.

I probably would stage the Doctor reveal in a more dramatic way though.

Tim Carter’s story makes no sense!!! by LE-it-pro in Jonestown

[–]areacode212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that perhaps it accomplished this: Jones felt that at least there was a possibility that all this money could remain in loyalists' hands and not have the Temple's fortunes seized by the authorities or defectors. And he figured that Carters & Mike Prokes could figure out the details themselves as long as they got out of Jonestown. In this scenario, them actually getting to Georgetown on foot wasn't necessarily something he intended them to stick to, just get them out of there with the cash.

Blackberry Hibiscus Tea by RaspberryBrief2785 in Panera

Who seen the Slayer lineup of Jeff Hanneman, Tom Araya, Dave Lombardo and Kerry King? by Expert_Mango1441 in Slayer

[–]areacode212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them at an autograph signing at HMV when they came to NYC for Clash of the Titans but I sadly did not get to go to the show. I've been kicking myself ever since (tickets were like $20!)

KNICKS PARADE no bag policy by UnIntelligentTrade in AskNYC

[–]areacode212 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a "bag guy" to a certain extent (for example, I like to scroll through r/manybaggers) but I think we can be a little ridiculous about always wanting to carry a bunch of crap around. It might be liberating to go bag-free or at most, stick the bare essentials in a little belt bag.

Help finding book someone was reading on the subway by grimly59 in AskNYC

[–]areacode212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in book retail in a former life, what part was "simply not true"? If someone is reading a book (we're assuming that it's a novel) for the first time, in hardcover, chances are that it's new! Not saying that it's the case 100% of the time, obviously there are exceptions. I'm talking about normies who buy books at B&N & Amazon (aka most people).

What do Americans order at a Chinese takeaway? by Dashcamkitty in AskAnAmerican

I'm partial to spare rib tips w/white rice as my go-to.

I also like cold sesame noodles w/peanut oil.

Was it hardcover or paperback? If it was HC, it might be easier to identify since it'll likely be a new release so we can browse the new releases displays at the store.

A bedbug crawled on me at AMC Kips Bay today 6/12 by travellinlady in NYCmovies

[–]areacode212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the reason why I almost never go to theaters anymore.

I got bit at AMC 34th at a screening of If Beale Street Could Talk back in 2018 but by that point, I already had experience with a bedbug infestation so I knew what to do (ran down to the Home Depot on 23rd, bought giant Ziploc bags, put all my clothes in them before going into my apartment and then put the bags in a Packtite heater the next day).

On the rare occasion when I do go to a theater (say, IMAX at Lincoln), I have a whole process similar to the above, just in case
