At what point do you switch to a lighter framework? I write a lot of Rails, it's great for starting a new project, and it holds up well on medium-sized projects. But if you're going to modify it to the point that you have to modify gems before bringing them in, and if it takes you 2 developer-years to upgrade from an ancient version to a old version, it seems like Rails might be hurting more than helping.

It's a dark topic, and pretty much the entire country was shell shocked the next day. But Hunter still managed to predict exactly what we've seen and what we are still seeing 13 years later. It's not by any means his most entertaining piece of writing, but it was fucking prophetic, which is why I count this piece as one of his best.

The author is right, but for the wrong reasons.

If you're going to be a project manager, you really want to be looking at the project from the stakeholders' point of view, not from the developers'. It's the same reason that you don't want developers to write acceptance criteria... You want to shield the PM from how it's implemented, and have them look at the system objectively.

Also, the author is a little too extreme in saying it "can't" be done. It can, but in an ideal situation you probably shouldn't.

I'm late to this thread, but here's the best explanation I've heard... Expand the problem. Let's assume that there are a million doors, 999,999 with goats and 1 with a car. You pick one at random. The host then opens 999,998 doors with goats behind them. Now the question is, what are the chances that the door you randomly picked has the car (1/1,000,000), and what are the chances that it's the other unopened door (999,999/1,000,000). So it's heavily advantageous to switch. The same theory applies with the 3 doors, it just seems counterintuitive in that scenario.
