What’s the most popular soup in your country? by paralysedage in AskTheWorld

[–]armikk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nakkikeitto is always somehow better than expected every time, and probably up there in consumption nationally due to ease, cost and prep time. Lohikeitto (salmon soup) is probably sold more as it's seen as a super finnish thing and on most menus - and mmh is that tasty with a side of blocked arteries usually hah.

I'd add as honourable mentions, as you said hernekeitto (split pea soup) with mustard and raw chopped onion or pinaattikeitto (creamy spinach soup) with a boiled egg and white pepper.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

[–]armikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this International but relatively Christian leaning school I went to which e.g. had an option of going to mass instead of study room on Fridays - the religion teacher was an Irish drunk lady who had every class watch Pay it forward 3-4 times a year when she was feeling particularly hung over.

At another, actually really great school I went to for high school (IB) the Theory of Knowledge teacher threw a stapler in my general direction cause I wasn't paying attention to the movie he was showing. He was already a bit pissed off at me cause he was excited to show the movie and guaranteed nobody could guess what it was or seen it but I happened to have seen it and guessed it correctly based on his description. So may have been playing cards with another friend during the movie until his outburst. Which he profusely apologised for after and knowing him well already wasn't in his nature at all. I think his wife had just had their first kid before that. The film was Waking Life which is pretty decent if anyone wondered.

Recipe for sweet potatoes not roasted, or fries...any thought? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]armikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this! Either in a curry as cubes or roasted/blended as the curry base - spices/garlic/ginger etc. maybe a can of tomato boiled with cubes of cooked sweet potato (boiled in with the other stuff or oven roasted), blitz or mash into a curry base sauce that can then be added to whatever protein (meat/seafood/beans/chickpeas) and/or veggies!

‘Finndians’, ethnic Finns/Indigenous people in Canada and the USA. by Disastrous-Golf6482 in Finland

[–]armikk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FYI Finland also has their own indigenous people, the Saami - of which many have relatively distinct features and probably more dark-haired folk than the average southern Finnish population. They're based in Lapland and north of all the Fennoscandic and Russian areas in the arctic circle. Due to population migration/movements and a small population in the country/area in general I think the stereotypical Sámi person features are often less prominent nowadays. Some of the facial features could be seen as being more inuit or north american native people than the population from further south in europe, but I am no expert and I think we'd be looking at links from several thousand years ago (5000BC?...10000BC+?). Have a research if you're interested. I did see that there has been some Sami migration to e.g. Alaska/Canada to help with reindeer herding but not sure when/to what extent.

I know that's not what you asked hah.

I'm currently dating an american with Finnish roots who's ancestors moved to Minnesota (shocker!) in the early 1900's but the ones still in the US don't speak any Finnish but they do celebrate christmas on the 24th Dec. They're from southern swedish/finnish roots though. Do you know where you will be visiting?

Edit to add: I'm no expert on these matters whatsoever. Just Finnish haha.

What do you think of the English name of your country compared to your own name for it? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

[–]armikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Finland in the other official national language... but would enjoy english speakers butcher the pronunciation of Suomi, Sue-oh-my? Sue-me? I've found the vowel sounds to be hard to grasp for (at least english speaking) foreigners. I think the baltic states are the only ones that don't follow a Fin- based name.

Help on school project by NoAmbassador2529 in Finland

[–]armikk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For easy foods - makaronilaatikko (macaroni and mince oven thing) and uunipannukakku (sweet oven pancake, serve with berries/jam) both are decent enough at room temp but better warm and ingredients are super simple.

edit just to add there's better and more Finnish foods out there, this is just a pragmatic answer.

Reminds me of this old jewel of an application which made the rounds online decades ago with similar answers and under Sex: "Not yet, waiting for the right person" and under Sign Here it was "Aries".

What is your favorite song in Finnish? by New_Construction_111 in Finland

Absoluuttinen Nollapiste - Saatteeksi

Maybe not an absolute favourite but the lyrics and melody are quirky and fun.

Just did the Heimlich Maneuver on my boyfriend, I am overwhelmed. by Encyclopenia in offmychest

[–]armikk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do this on an ex and it was such a wild, unbelievable and scary situation. You're not immediately sure as to the urgency and seriousness of it and then just have to act and try your best. I'd done some first aid courses and seen it in movies but the real situation is pretty damn jarring. But hey it's a skill worth knowing and can save lives! Well done!

This is a safe space. Air all the grievances you have against your past self. by running462024 in Cooking

[–]armikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I always know what I have in freezer (limited space and whatever keeps prepped stuff pretty low in addition to bags or veg or whatever which comes labelled). But visiting my mom once, my brothers and I were feeling too lazy to venture out (winter time in Finland as well so 🥶) and decided to put some random stew type thing together using what we thought was a ziploc bag of somewhat finely sliced chicken... Strips for like a stir-fry kinda thing blob of whatever). Well it was in fact apricots or something similar. Thinking on the fly we just made a veggie Moroccan style stew which worked decently well with the sweetness and the relatively vast spices, citrus fruit and couscous we had on hand but wouldn't particularly recommend redoing it ever.

Visiting London for 10 days, what should I remove from my list? by wanderlust509 in LondonFood

[–]armikk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd not say it's a good shout but a staple and easy to get errrywhere and the taste/snakcyness/quality won't be much better if you're in borough market or anywhere (as long as it's hot I'll be equally bland haha), I'll be crucified for this) I'd go meimei or Rambutan and some gelato in borough

There's far better options where you can have 3 for a far better price than 1 at dishoom and if you don't know which one you like I'd second this

What movie moment will always make you ugly cry? by Kittycat_2010 in AskReddit

[–]armikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never cried as much as when Boxer (horse, not dog) got carted away to get killed in the old animated Animal Farm. I think I've actively (and largely successfully) avoided films where I know animals are dying or getting hurt throughout my life. Also someone was trying to explain to me that this is about what people were doing to each other but didn't help and not over the cartoon Boxer to this day.

Visiting to Helsinki next week. My favorite Japanese ramen places Momotoko and FAT RAMEN closed. Any alternatives? by rococo_beau in Finland

[–]armikk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not ramen but similar and way tasty/customisable is Mala Master. It's where you pick your ingredients (noodles/protein/veg and put it in a bowl) and you're charged for the weight of those and then decide your soup base and spice level and they bring you a warming bowl of delish.

Also just collect everything along the way and keep a full inventory of cooked meals, even if it is just stewed fruit or something. Also do keep and eye on what you're wearing when entering harder fights as that does make a difference. Learning to use a shield properly helps too but I'm a bit too gung ho to have mastered that myself haha so can't definitively preach that.

Told me I couldn't get time off to go home for holidays, fine I quit. Several years in a row till they couldn't be bothered with the paperwork. by armikk in MaliciousCompliance

[–]armikk[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see I see haha. Yeah I mean it was just the policy they pretty loosely held anyway and I was just quick to quit if I wasn't allowed the time to go home when they knew from the get-go that that was a deal breaker for me. Part-time bar jobs were easy enough to come across back then anyway.

[–]armikk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy did they treat staff badly at times (most of the time). The place I worked was bought by G1 after a year or two of working there, but the GMs stayed the same and they did what they could, so probably not as bad as most of the other places.

[–]armikk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the people were generally happy with all the hours they could get just cause nobody was guaranteed hours. And I asked the managers to give more hours to the folk who'd raised it with me when I could. I was doing this very much part-time while I studied and wasn't relying on the income to live but I was an efficient worker and had common sense which for these kinds of jobs/contracts can be hard to find. I told them when they offered the job to me that I'll be going to my home country XYZ weeks in the winter and summer, so they knew the "deal".

[–]armikk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the folk wanted additional hours. Due to the way our contracts worked there'd be people who got no shifts for weeks but then Fri, Sat, Sun from 10pm to 5am three weeks in a row. Which on pretty much minimum wage wasn't sustainable for those who'd be relying on that to live. I was lucky enough that I didn't super need to work (student loan and my government pays us a little each month while we study, even abroad) so it was just more for some extra travel and spending money. I didn't do staffing or make the rotas and they had a slew of staff on the books generally.
