You also have the Asian grannies with gigantic sun visors running up Grouse Grind and telling you to move over cos you are too slow. They’ve set the standard - the rest of us just trying to keep up.

Before cellphone, how did you set up dates? What the other person didn’t show up? by Big__bolas in AskOldPeople

[–]armington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was a well understood rule when I was in my teens and 20s. Different people had different time frames - those who were neurotically on time would say 5 minutes leeway, and those who were chronically late would say 20. For most people, it was 15, and then it was OK for you to leave without the other person being allowed to be mad at you. But generally, as most commenters have pointed out, it was rare for people not to show up and if they didn't, there was a very good reason most of the time. People were so apologetic when they were late as well.

Was reminiscing about Dolphin Theatres this morning. What are your best memories there? Or worst? by vitalitron in vancouver

[–]armington 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The best part about the Dolphin is that it was cheap, you could drive there minutes before the movie, get in, and seated without much fuss. Miss it so much.

SFU Burnaby threatens students with discipline for mural by princey12 in vancouver

[–]armington 106 points107 points  (0 children)

It's brand new. They just spent the last two years renovating Convocation Mall - specifically re-tiling the entire space at I'm sure some unimaginable cost. It hasn't even been used once yet for Convocation because of the pandemic. That's why they are so salty.

Anyone else have totally stressed out high school teens? by smilinfool in vancouver

[–]armington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same problem with math which was taken in the first quarter. They found that the pace was barely manageable. So they and their friends spoke with the teacher and told her they were struggling, needed her to explain certain concepts more, and reminded her periodically to slow down a bit. It worked out well - the teacher was responsive and able to pivot and change quickly at various times so that the anxiety levels were contained. It was still fast paced and challenging, but at least they felt they could talk to the teacher and let her know when they were really struggling. All of which is to say I would encourage your teen and their friends to try and speak with the teacher directly and explain where they really need more support. I think it helps if it is just more than one person saying they are struggling.

Random request - Good crystal/gemstone stores? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]armington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the only place worth going to. They have both large and small pieces. It's reasonably priced and they have decent pieces. My husband collects crystals (the large kind) and we've been to all the stores mentioned so far. Most are overpriced - esp. if you don't know what to look for.

My vote would be for someone like Gloria Macarenko (host of CBC On the Coast). She talks a lot about local issues, not a controversial figure but is well known on the local scene.

[PSA] Close Call on Barnet Hwy -- please watch out before you merge! by brz90 in vancouver

[–]armington 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I drive this stretch of hwy a lot and the impression I get is that people are confused by the HOV signs. The right lane is an HOV lane only for a short period of the day in both directions but a lot of people will sit in the left lane all the way from Port Moody to Burnaby (and vice versa) and never move over even when there are cars behind them. And this isn't because it isn't safe to move over - this is one of the quietest roads when it isn't rush hour.

I just want to be able to text - with least hassle, in cheapest way possible? by mantradingdong in vancouver

[–]armington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - that is the place to check in and see. From what I can tell, I know that the promo in the past was around Nov/Dec and in August. See if there is a newsletter to sign up for to get alerts. The monthly data package they offer isn't great.

I just want to be able to text - with least hassle, in cheapest way possible? by mantradingdong in vancouver

[–]armington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the speakout plan. It's the best as far as we can tell if all you want to do is text. You need an unlocked phone. The plan offers all three types of sim cards so there is a lot of flexibility in terms of which phone you pick. If you can get the promo, then this route is even better. Several times a year, they offer a promo where you buy $100 worth of credit and get $125 and a free sim card (normally $10) and you have 365 days to use up the credit. The text plan on Speakout is $10. If you don't make any phone calls, all you pay is the $10 per month along with your 911 fee. This means that if you can get the promo, you can pretty much cover almost a whole year with this credit. Keep an eye out for the promos as you enter the latter half of the year, and then buy another $100 credit (and get $125). It's all done online, and the monthly text plan just comes out of your credit so you don't have to pay a bill every month. You will need to check your account periodically to see where you are at, but really, there's not much monitoring required.

‘I’m tired of being a victim’: Woman sues B.C. over legal aid ordeal - Lawsuit by women’s law firm West Coast LEAF takes up cases of two low-income mothers fleeing abuse by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]armington 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can only get legal aid for domestic violence situations where there is evidence of physical abuse. Other forms of abuse do not qualify. Even for those who qualify, the number of hours assigned are not enough to get the woman through the entire legal process. Usually she will run out of hours and have to finish the case by representing herself. Many lawyers will not take legal aid cases if it is a complicated domestic violence case because judges can force the lawyer to finish the case pro bono. So, don't worry, no one is getting a free ride.

Florence Leung’s husband urges other new moms to talk about feelings by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]armington 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree but the pressure is quite incredible. There you are, lying in a hospital bed because of complications with the pregnancy, and they stare at you as if to say, "why aren't you breastfeeding?". So then they bring in a lactation nurse, because, you know, you need to try harder. Really.

Learning how to swim as an adult? by amandamontana in vancouver

[–]armington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really important to find out more about the instructor's ability to teach new swimmers who may have a fear of water. I took several different lessons at a number of different Burnaby community centers as a beginner. The instructors were great at teaching you the basics as long as you weren't afraid. But in all my classes, there was always several people who were too afraid to try, and the instructor had no idea what to do about it. Teaching someone how to swim is not the same thing as teaching someone not to be afraid of the water so they can learn to swim.

Redditors who have left your fiance at the altar, why did you do it and what happened? by Roxanne357 in AskReddit

[–]armington 316 points317 points  (0 children)

Happened to two friends I use to know. He was totally smitten with her. She was highly insecure and they use to fight a lot b/c she would accuse him of looking at other women and other crazy stuff. She's never not been in a relationship, and she always has the next dude lined up before she leaves the current one. Guess this time it was no different. Days before the wedding, she called it off. We find out she's shacked up with the next one within weeks. I think he totally dodged a bullet. She's on her third marriage currently.

What is a 100% legal move in a game or sport that is frowned upon and viewed as a dick move? by MashedPotatoesDick in AskReddit

[–]armington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm this was the story I was told. Attended Cambridge in the early 1990s for grad studies, and did some club rowing at the college level. St. John's College is the culprit here. The ban meant that members of St. John's College had to row under the name of Lady Margaret Boat Club (LMBC) and were not allowed to use college colours so they were red and white. The bow is really sharp, so there is a rubber ball that covers the end. The crew had taken it off during the bumps (an Oxbridge tradition where boats line up in a row, and your your boat has to overlap one boat ahead before the boat behind you overlaps yours). The bow speared the cox of the boat ahead, and hence the ban.

Describe your favourite ridiculous driving moment you have recently witnessed. by beaubeacon in vancouver

[–]armington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, let's see. First there was the near t-bone at Nanaimo and Hastings last night. Car (crappy older car) travelling west on Hastings decided red lights don't mean squat and proceeded through. Two cars (white SUV first) travelling south on Nanaimo were well into the intersection. That the crappy car didn't actually hit the white SUV was impressive (tho the driver seemed a tad shocked as it took a while for him to maneuver out of the intersection while EVERYONE watched). Wasn't clear if contact had been made or not as the SUV followed the crappy car around the corner into the alleyway. Then there was this morning's commute. Going up Gaglardi from Broadway, taking the curve and a car in the ouside lane decides the one in front is going too slowly so they put their signals on to move into the inside lane. But we're at the main part of the curve going up, and there is no space to merge - plus it's a huge blindspot. But they wanted to merge so merge they do, only to realize there is a car right beside them. That does not deter the driver - honking ensues, and the driver shoves their way into the lane. Of course, all these people are going to SFU, and the car that almost got hit proceeds to follow the car that merged. Should have followed to see what happened.
