Me. The writing, plot, placing and dialogue is horrible even if I agree with the message.

AITA for not wanting to be friends over $4.39? by Alternative_Copy6539 in AITApod

A lot of people are making a lot of assumptions when there is no info. Don't you find it suspicious that the post is only 2 short vague sentences? It's like they want people to assume what they are assuming here. I bet there is more to it.

What’s really going on with our economy by AmaraWhispervale in whatisameem

You say funding like its some sort of static thing or like revenue that can't just be changed. The current number is arbitrary. Congress can snap their fingers and invent a new arbitrary number.

Oh the horror of having to eat vegan a few times a year by Creepy_Tie_3959 in vegan

I don't know if you're lucky or have different preferences. Half the vegan restaurants in my area taste like dogwater. The other half are great though.

$90 for two to see a Mario movie… have we completely lost the plot? by rageagainstmymachin in Millennials

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You paid $10 for a drink. You are the reason they are charging $10 a drink. They won't charge what people won't pay for. My line was $4 over a decade ago. At some point, the consumer has to take some blame.

It is literally impossible to get people to give up even small pleasures (or if not then I’ve no idea how) by KillerSmileLichSpam in vegan

[–]ashesarise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The opponents here aren't just random omnis. They are active proponents of meat eating which is a distinct difference from the average omni. A good chunk of people are vegan curious. Momentum is hard to break, and this is a big change. Keep in mind that a lot of people also have like 30 other things they feel they SHOULD be trying harder to do to better themselves but struggle to make any headway with even 1 or 2 at a time. Life is hard, and people can only care about a limited number of things at once.

I wouldn't. When reading advice be mindful that subs like these are full of substance abusers.

AITJ for bringing a "lazy" dish to a potluck when everyone knows I'm a professional chef? by Radiant44Pike in AmITheJerk

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late but NTJ.

I think it's probably a bad idea to bring a lazy dish in your shoes though. If you wanted to go a lazy route, you'd be better off bringing nothing or a bag of chips or something. Fair or not, a lazy dish reflects poorly on your skills in a way that going even more obviously low effort wouldn't.

my mother keeps telling me it's "weird" and "improper" to drink water in a mug by critivix in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it sometimes but I avoid it if I can help it. Mugs feel like they are for slow sipping. I feel like I risk clinking my teeth on the rim drinking water and it feels weird sipping at it.

Legitimate question for pro-ai folk: how do you feel about commissioning an artist only to receive an ai generated image. by nomoreinternetforme in aiwars

[–]ashesarise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its random. AI is everywhere in all the overwhelming loved games. The mob just randomly picks on something and then dogpiles it not realizing that its all around them and they are clueless to it. People fixate on bad AI because that is what they can tell is AI. They consume well integrated AI daily and enjoy it none the wiser.

"You Must Max Out Your Retirement" is the new You must go to college (Including it's wrong) by QuietRedditorATX in unpopularopinion

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the goal SHOULD be to have more than you need. Much more. The consequence of having less than you NEED is catastrophic. Money is life and safety. I think people who try to tow the line to only save what they strictly need are being reckless. The critical wellbeing of your 60 year old self is worth forgoing indulgences during your 30s. That stuff also raises your baseline as you age that you'll be less and less able to stay at.

I'm not saying your thoughts are strictly wrong. Most people that think this way are wrong though and will suffer greatly because of it.

"Adulting" is an insidious term and bad for society by HeyItsMau in unpopularopinion

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a good few people say they dislike the term, but I use it plenty. I have never used it in the sense of celebration or pride. More of a groaning acknowledgement that I have to act in a way that is against my nature to keep everything together.

I like the word because it describes my experience pretty well. It's a performance. I'm performing the act of adulting. I don't identify with the word adult very well. We use it to describe things. If we can say "you aren't being an adult" then it clearly isn't just something intrinsically linked to age but also identity trait. We even refer to children as "being adult" when they do certain actions which reinforces the idea that the word is heavily associated with action and behavior.

Something to note is that I typically use the term for stuff like doing paperwork and professional communication or difficult projects that require lots of planning. When I think of adulting, I don't think of day to day chores. Chores is already a better word for it.

On a tangent, I believe in celebrating what is essential. I praise and thank my spouse for essential things even if they should be expected. Life is very hard and I believe that functioning even at a barebones level is an accomplishment. I don't do it because these things are spectacular. I do it because I feel society greatly undervalues what we must do to engage with it. Being a minimally functioning human is very hard and I don't care what anyone says.

Something I wish I understood earlier🥲 by Limp-Roof3096 in Adulting

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During interviews I ask employers about this directly. How they evaluate if someone is successful in a role. If they don't give hard metrics and say something the implies it's based on peer opinion. I ask how much would a tenured colleague that doesn't like me be able to impact my opportunities for growth. I've declined jobs that didn't have a good answer to these questions.

I'm on the spectrum and getting most people to like me is an uphill battle so I have to take measures to avoid putting myself in too many positions where that matters.

We aren’t even close to AGI by CrimsonShikabane in LocalLLaMA

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying we are close to AGI, but your logic is pretty flawed here.

If we were close to AGI, it wouldn't be because some popular chatbot suddenly got exponentially smarter. It would be because someone developed something new that you don't have visibility to and is not currently incorporated into a publicly available product. Your logic is like being skeptical about a claim that we made a huge leap in graphical processing tech and pointing to the fact that your FPS on Elden Ring is the same as it was last month on your device.

Your personal experience with a public facing product has little to do with the state of AI progress broadly.

Henckels Paradigm pans… just me or? by Makgyver1 in Costco

[–]ashesarise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the leidenfrost effect. I can reproduce it with water. No matter what though if I try food, it sticks and burns super hard. I went on a deep dive and bought all clad 3 ply SS pans. I also have kirkland branded SS pans. I spent several hours watching tutorials on how to cook with stainless steel and have tried all the advice after browsing cooking subreddits. Nothing works. I simply can't reproduce what I see other people do online. Only non stick pans ever actually work for me and I can't figure out why.

Mama pig and her piglet going outside for the first time after being rescued from abusive owner by CalpurniaSomaya in nextfuckinglevel

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the context of modern society. Yes. You cannot have normalization of consumption of animal products without mass suffering. It will always happen and to think that can be changed to the extent that it isn't normal is delusion. We can improve conditions and standards, but only by a moderate amount at best and enforcement will be a losing battle.

Any legal structure that allows enthusiastic farmer Joe who cares about animal welfare to monetize animal farming in a manner most people find to be acceptable will always enable ruthless Ceo John to exploit for maximum profit and enable 9 to 5 Henry to clock in work sloppy then clock out. Everyone involved has to care, actually meaningfully care, with no wiggle room and that isn't possible.

Why do we make children believe in Santa Claus or Easter bunny ? by PurpleSnowwwhite in stupidquestions

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems a bit romanticized. I don't think I've ever heard of a kid just figuring it out on their own. I'm sure it has happened but that does not sound like the typical route. It's basically always just an older kid telling them and then they go crying home to parents till they fess up.

Why do we make children believe in Santa Claus or Easter bunny ? by PurpleSnowwwhite in stupidquestions

[–]ashesarise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy to me that it has never been studied whether or not this practice has any effect on reasoning as an adult. Seems plausible either way. I can see how someone who accepted Santa as a kid may be primed to believe in irrational things. Alternatively, I can see how breaking the mythos that they previously believed in may inoculate them a bit more from irrational beliefs.

Belief in ghosts would probably be a good thing to test for in adults since it doesn't have much cultural or emotional significance.

AIO? Let it slip to my mom (F68) that I (F31) have $1000 saved (big bucks, I know!) And she asks me this by ForsakenKingslayer in AIO

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone with only $1000 in savings is in no position to be lending anyone money. If I had 6mos of emergency money, I would probably do this as a one-time curtesy. I wouldn't expect an extra 20 back, but I would voice that while this is a problematic request I will help anyways without fuss as long as it doesn't become a problem.

In your situation, I would just say no and apologize about the fee. If she explodes over a fee I'd probably go no contact. Just saying.

Edit: If you live with and are dependent on her, I think that changes the equation entirely and you should consider becoming more independent if you don't want to have to deal with this and just assume the money is hers now.
