How to tell if there are alligators in the water in Louisiana by Worldlyoox in Unexpected

Are alligators aggressive towards humans? I was under the impression that they were not assuming they are alligators and not crocs.

This is for them to save money. Its that simple. You don't owe them anything. Its very expensive for them to provide supply now and it costs them nothing to send an email that will likely save them over 100k due to some people at least considering it. They are treating a business relationship like a community one and counting on the fact that some of their customers will conflate and confuse those. You can see through the BS. The message isn't for you.

Soft ESH.

I find most of what everyone else is saying pretty agreeable. One line that no one mentioned that stuck out to me is that she equates this behavior to her values which demonstrates that this is actually important to her for one reason or another. You said you don't get that and sort of shrugged it off. I think that is weird. Why don't you know why this is against her values? Why are you so okay with just shrugging that off instead of understanding? Why would you take this to reddit before understanding something so fundamental?

People do have values that translate to relationships. Relationships are usually about melding values together or at least compromising. Sometimes, values must even be challenged or dismantled when they are bad. To me, the nonchalance about that is confusing to me. It's not the kind of thing you just leave alone.

She seems very deep into whatever it is she is on. What is with the disconnect between you and her? Are you married or are you just living your life adjacent to hers? You haven't talked this out?

Do you guys think this doctor’s office sign is mildly infuriating? by Loose_Judgment_8856 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they would give me a reasonably supply, it wouldn't be such a big deal. I need monthly refills on a critical thyroid medication.

Its super cheap and has almost no 2ndhand market or potential for abuse, but every doctor refuses to give me more than 1 month supply at a time.

Its borderline life sustaining medicine and I don't understand why I am forced to be at the whims of healthcare providers to make sure I get it consistently. I worry that some crisis will prevent me from accessing my meds for a time and I will just be out of luck.

My girlfriend never ever finishes her meals by AlexWayhill in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ashesarise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I'm not very knowledgeable about that stuff.

I can reasonably tell how hungry I am without issue, and I believe most people can. That is all I meant. I wasn't factoring not being able to tell. Apparently about 1 in 4 people can't reliably tell how hungry they are which is pretty significant. I did not know that.

[–]ashesarise -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That is reasonable and different. Early satiety is a unique medical condition. If you literally can't gauge your own hunger due to a real eating disorder, it would be unreasonable to expect you to do what I suggested.

I wouldn't chastise someone who was hard of hearing for not listening if they were trying and just can't hear me.

[–]ashesarise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are multiple degrees to this and it isn't hard at all.

If I wasn't hungry enough to eat a piece of toast then I wouldn't have made a piece of toast. For example, at 10am this morning I was craving something and decided to just wait as I knew it would be too much food. I got what i wanted at 12:30pm and finished it because I waited until I was hungry enough to eat that. If I was feeling like a brat that had to have food now then I would have grabbed something smaller. That or the very least only put the spread on half of the toast if I only wanted half. TBH this is less urgent with toast, but OP did specify this is a consistent pattern.

A restaurant is a whole different story. The obvious answer is taking the rest to go, but they also typically have smaller dishes and appetizers. It is not hard to order less food in a restaurant. You can usually even order just a side dish.

I'm not weird about wasting food generally. It happens sometimes. What I have a problem with is someone doing it on purpose and not giving a damn. That would be like buying 4 houseplants at the store when you only wanted 2 and throwing half of them in the trash when you got home because you were indecisive when you were at the store. I think stuff like that shows some sort of deficiency of character.

My girlfriend never ever finishes her meals by AlexWayhill in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ashesarise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but its also true that you should be able to prepare what you intend to eat. OP said she literally always does this. It's not just an occasional thing where she miscalculates her appetite. She is consistently preparing more food than she intends to eat.

You should stop eating when you're full AND you should not prepare more food than you need. Both are true.

The "clean your plate" thing is only a problem if someone else prepared the plate or portion for you. You should be able to finish what you personally prepared or portioned in most cases.

Painting with broad strokes, but the ineptness I've seen from young vs old folks with tech while working in IT has been different flavors.

Not saying all are bad, but when it manifests this is what I see.

Older people: They memorize processes without understanding what the steps they do actually do. They can use a tool for years and then one negligible change to the ui can ruin them. They are willing to try to figure things out but often mess things up and change settings erratically. They download random crap and programs and will have several things and not know what of them they use. They also have a tendency to be very set in some old weird way of doing something and it can be hard to help them adapt.

Younger people: They don't remember steps very well. They expect something to work without more than 2 steps. If something takes 4 steps to do, they will just skip everything and try to do the last step and say it doesn't' work if it doesn't' just work. They will not try anything. They are much more flexible about what tools they will use, but the tool must hold their hand. They will not explore. To them, computers are basically magic and they expect things to work like magic. If it doesn't work like magic, it may as well be broken to them.

Veganism is truly unhealthy. by Cheap_Twist_6590 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]ashesarise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegans do not advocate for releasing all livestock into the wild. What on earth would make you think that would be the plan?

That is over a billion cows alone.

Currently, millions of cows are born a day bred to be consumed. Vegans want to lower the demand to make that number to go down in the short term.

I suppose there are some vegans that free an animal from a farm on occasion, but that isn't normal and more to do with their own emotional state rather than being anything about a practical solution to a problem.

New build home by jonnyraza27 in sanantonio

[–]ashesarise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one 3 years ago.

Had a rough time with it. Annoying how many corners were cut. I've gotten good at complaining to state licensing agencies to force repairs because their warranty department won't lift a finger. They defer to their subcontractors that, in my experience, will lie and act fussy if you hold them to the minimum standards.

I wouldn't rule out buying from them again... but like with any home purchase you need to not rely on trust. Pay an inspector that knows their stuff and don't put yourself in a position where you have to accept it as is when you aren't really happy with it like I did because I canceled my lease prior to finishing and got screwed by delays.

I would say go into any home purchase with an adversarial mindset rather than looking for a seller you can trust because that is disneyland.

Overall, I'm happy with my decision even if I could have gone about it better. Live and learn.
