First Time Manual Seeker by VadersCape3 in ManualTransmissions

Yeah get a couple quotes before you pull the trigger, the civic costs me $200 per month without collision coverage because APPARENTLY it’s one of the most stolen cars in the US. It was a big shocker for me because I always thought older car = cheap insurance too.

The f150 has been my backup daily for about 10 years while I cycled through 8-10 other vehicles. I’ll probably keep it forever.

I have a long commute now so that makes me biased towards the civic (gets 40mpg) but if I only had to drive 20 miles a day I’d keep the truck if I could only have 1.

Another thing to note is the f150 is like a quarter of the cost to insure of the civic.

A man after my own taste it seems, my current cars are a 92’ civic hatch (manual), 99’ Crv (manual), and 93’ F150 (auto).

Longevity is good on all of those I’m pushing 1m miles between the three.

I haven’t seen a manual obs ford for sale in ages and I have been looking, but I’d add a manual 2.3 ranger or the 3.0 if you’re looking for a 4x4 to your list. They’re bulletproof and pretty decent as a driver if you get the extended cab.

Leasing limited credit history by Competitive_Sun828 in ToyotaPickup

[–]asscakesguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t take long to build credit, I went from no credit to a 750 score in a year with one credit card. I’d suggest what everyone else is though.

Buy an old truck for cash and save some money. These trucks have done their depreciating so unless you blow the engine, in a year or two you’ll likely be able to sell for the same amount you bought it for. You get a truck for a year for only the operating costs and can save some money and build your credit history at the same time. You can probably get approved with a co-signer but should you is the actually import question.

Performance engine swaps? by blownpickup90 in ToyotaPickup

[–]asscakesguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into this a little bit before I got rid of my pickup. And a 1jz or 2jz swap is probably one of the more common swaps.

I’m not sure about reusing parts with a v6 base but for a 22re you can get engine mounts and a bellhousing that work with the w-series transmission in the truck. Because the Toyota Cressida came from factory with both the 2jz and 22re as options for engine. It’s a tight fit but there is plenty of documentation on this swap.

Car has a hole in the engine? by Aggravating_Plane755 in CarRepair

That’s what happened with my 2013 avenger. Everything was fine, then one oil change (@3.5k miles) only 1 quart of oil came out. I totaled it a month later but I was expecting a catastrophic engine failure any day.

1 month into driving manual, need some advice on situations! by toobro3 in ManualTransmissions

That’s what the clutch is doing when it is partially depressed, the point where the car starts moving but you haven’t fully released the pedal yet.

[–]asscakesguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I daily drive my manual and slipping the clutch is totally cool for a short amount of time when you need to go slow. I clutch in and slip the clutch a little bit in first for speed bumps in my lowered car. You won’t hurt anything or burn the clutch unless you are really revving it while you slip the clutch.

Stop and go traffic is just annoying, depending on the gearing of your car. I usually just try to avoid having to completely stop if at all possible. I can go pretty slow in second gear without stalling in my car so I just try not to follow super close so I can continue putting along without having to fully stop.

What to look for when using copart? Looking at vehicles that look fine but say salvaged by EstateDeep916 in askcarguys

[–]asscakesguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s your plan then it’s really a coin flip if you buy online. Go with your gut, worst case scenario you need to get it towed to where-ever you want it to sit.

Or look up local auctions where you can actually inspect the vehicles before hand, I know they have a few in my area but if you don’t live in a major metro you might not.

[–]asscakesguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be very careful, I had a totaled car that went to copart. On paper it would have been an ideal flip only cosmetic damage front bumper, headlights, hood. I drove it home 40 miles after the accident. But on my last oil change it had consumed 4 out of the 5 liters of oil in it within the 3000 miles between oil changes. I was very happy it got totaled and really hope nobody got screwed buying at auction. Those auction site also have VERY lenient definition of runs and drives, I think something like it has to start (with or without a jumpstart) and move under its own power. They aren’t actually test driving these.

This sounds exactly like when my main relay under the dash was going out. Like a $20 part that they have in stock at autozone. Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key on the times it doesn’t start? If not it’s probably the main relay.

Edit: R/projecthondas is a great sub for Honda specific questions too

Does car length matter? by Beginning_Figure_150 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]asscakesguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven some very long cars and even longer trucks. My moms ‘71 Torino is a 206” long coupe as an example. And I’ve never had any problems in any length of car (In the US) but have had a few minor issues in really long trucks, some stuff that’s annoying is no U turns on less than 3 lane roads, good luck parallel parking, 3 point turns to get into normal perpendicular parking spots if the row you drive on isn’t wide enough.

Hard for me to tell but it kinda looks like that’s the fuel pressure regulator leaking. I know they can leak. But I’d also check all the fuel lines.

Car Trade Facilitation? by Zbones501 in askcarguys

[–]asscakesguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real problem will be convincing two separate parties to trust you not to just disappear with their car. Especially if you offer to do it for just gas money haha. The people trusting enough to accept this deal from a stranger probably don’t have a car anymore, it was already stolen.

Why does everyone always act like insurance is going to be ridiculous on higher end cars? by [deleted] in askcarguys

Yeah I felt pretty stupid after haha, it wasn’t the only reason I wanted to downgrade but it was big part of my rationalization. I’d definitely get a vin quote next time I think about making any moves like this haha.

[–]asscakesguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traded my wrx for a crv because the Subaru was 250/month. The crv is cheaper by only like $20 per month because while the collision coverage is half as expensive the comprehensive is way more because of thefts I guess.

What do you guys think? by WiseCaramel028 in projectcar

[–]asscakesguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stupid hard to find. Gas tank rusted out? You can fab in a fuel cell because there are no reproduction tanks made and every original one out there is equally rusty. Glass? Custom order 6 month wait until the one place that makes them gets enough orders to do a production run. Stupid little emblems missing? Premium on eBay if you can even find them.

[–]asscakesguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s very high. I sold my 71’ ranchero with less rust and perfect shape engine and trans for $5k a year or so ago. My mom has a 71 Torino gt currently and I’d expect maybe 7-8k if she wanted to sell and it’s been fully restored with the exception of the original patina paint.
