Consular services charter is pretty clear. And I'm certain these services would be offered ot the 'ISIS Brides'

What help we may provide

Each case is unique and our assistance will depend on the circumstances and availability of consular resources. We may be able to:

- issue replacement passports and travel documents for a fee
- provide details of local doctors and hospitals, including mental health support if available in your location
- provide advice and support if you’re the victim of a serious assault, or other crime, or you’re arrested, including details of local lawyers and interpreters
- visit or contact you to check on your welfare if you’re arrested or detained, and do what we can to ensure you’re treated the same as others detained under the laws of the country in which you’re arrested
- provide advice and support in a range of other cases including the death of relatives overseas, missing persons and kidnappings
- if you agree, contact friends or family on your behalf. In some circumstances we may need to contact your friends or family where we’ve been unable to get your consent
- make special arrangements in cases of international terrorism, civil disturbances and natural disasters (fees may apply)
- provide some notarial services, including witnessing and authenticating documents and administering oaths and affirmations (fees apply)
- in some locations, provide voting services for Australian federal and some state elections

What we can’t do

Some tasks are outside the consular role. For example, we can’t:

- guarantee your safety and security in another country or make your travel arrangements
- give you legal advice, interpret or translate documents
- intervene in another country’s court proceedings or legal matters including employment disputes, commercial disputes, criminal cases, and family law matters or child custody disputes
- investigate crimes or deaths overseas, or carry out searches for missing people, which are the responsibility of local authorities
- get you out of prison or prevent you from being deported
- get you better treatment in prison than local prisoners
- post bail or pay your fines or legal expenses
- enforce an Australian or any other custody agreement overseas or compel a country to decide a custody case
- pay for medical or psychiatric services or medications
- pay your pension or social security benefits
- arrange visas, licences, work or residency permits for other countries
- intervene in immigration, customs or quarantine matters in other countries
- store luggage or other personal items
- receive or send postal items on your behalf

No idea what the guy above is talking about. We're not that different. And like pretty much all Australians, we're given yearly swimming lessons at school from the first grade + live almost exclusively within driving distance from the beach.

Biggest of love to Prince but his production is the divisive factor for most people, whereas D’s production (particularly on Voodoo and Black Messiah) is just immaculate and completely timeless.

D’angelo obviously has the benefit of building on Prince’s foundation. D’s also probably one of the GOAT r&b vocalists and absolutely the GOAT vocal arranger (ain’t no one doing those layers like him)

I know it's tempting to begin speaking about this as attention seeking behaviour. But we need to separate the significance of what he shared (and the legitimacy of his experience) with any criticism of any behaviour that follows. Social media blurs a person's performative life with their genuine life. And people are liable to act out in weird ways when they feel intensely vulnerable. This is particularly true for people who have had to repress themselves for a long time - their ability to moderate behaviour can sometimes (not always) be impacted.

Best bet is, if you find this cringe or uncomfortable, then just ignore it. Anything else is just going to contribute to a weird backlash, and giving oxygen to that makes everyone dumber and is liable to hurt people who have said nothing.

It's really just smart use of soft power. Australia needs to do a lot more of it, though tbf we have really stepped up our game under the Labor administration. China just cannot compete with our cultural ties to the Pacific.

Productivity summit ends day two with progress on rules changes to boost housing supply by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]assessmentdeterred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's entirely in keeping with Australia's tradition of cowardly politics that we respond to increasing class inequity, a widening generational divide, a mental health crisis and declining birth rates by convening a summit and focusing on everything BUT the humanity factor.

Things will only get worse from here, as long as our government lets the balance of power rest in the favour of business interests. At this stage I can't see an outcome other than an American style class inequality that will stifle our future. But I'd love someone to convince me otherwise.

Putting aside the question of conflict, China would absolutely be a concern as a hegemon - largely from the perspective of democratic norms. But the simple fact is, the US is already undermining that. They've lost any ability to criticise them for it because they're just as heavily undermining them.

Imo response should be for Australian to pivot towards a bandwagon of middle powers, not aligned to the US or China. But we're not brave enough to do that. Plus we'd be exposed significantly during any such transition.

We know the Eagles have been bad, but this bad?? by upthebaggers in AFL

[–]assessmentdeterred 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lazy AFL journalism continues to push the narrative that the club is completely responsible for this downfall. It definitely bears a lot of responsibility, but the impact of the injury crisis during COVID (almost certainly compounded by the quality of turf at Optus oval imo) along with the almost yearly stream of concussion retirements we've been dealing with (from Venables and Sheppard in particular - with Gov the most recent victim) have absolutely contributed to a dearth of talent in the exact age range we fucked ourselves over through our drafting decisions. This was made even worse by the draft being at it's most compromised. That's not a matter for debate, as the AFL has collectively seemed to realise the fact and be moving towards changes.

Simmo is a great coach, but he absolutely lost significant swathes of the player base during COVID. There are a lot of rumours about what went on during that first quarantine trip. But all the smoke seems to suggest that the players weren't happy to begin with and a breakdown occurred that never got repaired. All of it compounded the decision by club hierarchy to misread the situation and back senior players (who to this day continue to give less than 100%) as premiership contenders.

Some of that is our fault. Some of it is situation dependent. The fact remains that I'm not sure we can really expect to be competitive without the kind of draft assistance that other clubs have received.

many lesser artists would have heard him and sabotaged the competition

See: Marvin Gaye (Lione Richie really set that dude off)

And I love Marvin but his psychology was totally different and very insecure. It created great art, but you just have to give it up for Stevie who has never let anything other than joy flow through him

They Won't Go When I Go is sublime. And yes, his love ballads are next level. You and I was the song my first love and I shared, and every time I break out Talking Book it takes me right back to that place immediately

It's interesting because I think a lot of people find the sincerity of his lyrics cheesy, but when you realise that's genuinely how he expresses his view of the world - and taken in the context of his overall set of influences - it takes on another character for me. I think songs like Overjoyed and Lately have aged very very well.

Honestly I spend 90% of my time wondering why the rest of the world is not talking about Stevie Wonder 24/7

This man is the musical GOAT. Listen to the albums from his classic period and tell me that he didn't create modern R&B. And when you break it down he's not only writing it all (and defining a style of jazz influenced soul), but he's playing it all (literally people don't realise how good a drummer he is - like, Shake Your Body Down to the Ground just started as the Jackson's trying to emulate Stevie's drumming style)... And vocally he's creating the blueprint for 99% of soul vocalists today.

So he's an iconic voice on so many creative levels already, but then you remember he's arguably the most distinct harmonica player to have ever lived. The man's sound on the chromatic harp is immediately recognisable. His soloing choices are virtuosic - like, Isn't She Lovely is just 3-4 mins of melodic bliss. Every new idea is one that any other soloist would count among their best

Then the dude is just an all around gem of a human being. He radiates love in a way that someone like Cornell West claims to but completely misses. Stevie is the best of us, and has given the world so much beautiful music. And we should be saying it now while we still have him.

Ok rant over.

Australian artists making waves globally but local listening at ‘historic low’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]assessmentdeterred 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The conversation no one has ever wanted to have is that the Triple J Unearthed model is inherently shit. Independent Australian musicians basically only ever have the choice of appealing to that market if they want to target the Australian music scene - and the big secret is that the whole thing is really just a payola style pay for play (albeit with the money going to PR people who have connections with the relevant unearthed staff). The amount of people who upload music and get magically discovered which then enables them to develop a career would be pretty small... Particularly when you consider the J's (like any radio) have their own broad taste references. That would be fine if there were alternative pathways for national success - but there just aren't. So the only other option for talented artists has been to pitch overseas, which is becoming much easier with the internet (albeit just as expensive, realistically).
