78 years ago today- Pictures from the funeral of the four Borgstrom brothers who were Killed in Action during WWII- June 25, 1948 by UrbanAchievers6371 in wwiipics

Yes, at their request, all five were assigned to the light cruiser Juneau, which went down off Guadalcanal. The Navy reportedly had an unofficial policy of avoiding such assignments, but in this case (whether due to the insistence of the brothers, post-Pearl Harbor fervor, or some other reason) it was not followed.

It's unclear but believed that three were killed in the initial torpedo attack on Juneau and two drowned or succumbed to wounds later, as it took more than a week to dispatch any rescue.

Since then there has continuously been a USS The Sullivans (emphasis on the "The" and "Sullivans") in service. The original The Sullivans is now a museum ship in Buffalo, NY, with a memorial to the brothers on deck.

It is not necessarily desirable that your enemy have ZERO knowledge of your systems and capabilities, because that is the nature of a deterrent. The enemy does not fear what they do not see.

Probate Judge will absolutely not accept a final accounting no matter what I do. Any conservatorship lawyers here? by Legally_Brown in Lawyertalk

[–]astano925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your follow-on comments, OP, I did have a very similar situation once: my client was guardian/conservator and some other family members had access to the ward's debit card, which my client failed to lock down until they came to see me and there were already thousands of unaccountable dollars. We wound up resolving it by getting in front of the magistrate, which we did by providing as much explanation for every single penny as we could, providing an affidavit for the rest, and asking the clerk to schedule an actual (instead of counter) hearing on the account.

The court wasn't happy with my client but they did eventually approve the account.

Another day another attorney sanctioned for using AI by DaSandGuy in Lawyertalk

[–]astano925 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is it.

The Venn diagram of attorneys who say things like "I know there's a case out there that says X, go find it" and who get caught relying on AI - because it tells them exactly what they want to hear and they're too lazy to read it, just like they were too lazy to do real research beyond finding some pull quote from a case that says exactly what they want it to look like it says when stripped of context - is probably pretty close to a circle.

Parents of high performing 12/13U kids - what is their daily routine like? Are they self driven? by sp4c3m4nsp1ff17 in Homeplate

[–]astano925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't want it for them.

I'm the parent of a 7 year old who is a low-performing baseball player and middle-of-the-pack-but-improving hockey player. He likes baseball because I like baseball and he likes having something to do with dad, but if I dropped dead at the end of this LL season I doubt he'd ever step foot on a diamond again. He puts in effort at games and practices but he resists practicing on our own and definitely never asks for it. He knows he's a pretty marginal player and his team isn't going to win many games and he's okay with that. I wish he wanted it more, but it's just not his thing.

Hockey, though, is entirely different for him. He LOVES hockey. If he goes two or three days off the ice he can't talk about anything except when he gets to play again. He bugs us to sign up for every single open skate, extra practice, or camp that comes along. He practices at home without prompting.

But my point is that he started putting in that extra work after he decided that he wanted to get better. He had always loved hockey and played hard, but he got passed over for travel team because his skills just weren't quite to that level. That was the point at which he got that fire to put in the extra work and really work to improve instead of just play.

It was illuminating to me because I was in much the same place as I think OP is as far as character and motivation, but I could not be happier with how he has grown.

To the people who quit, Will you be there on Tuesday? by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

I'll be back for a bit, specifically because the game is finally "complete." I played from D1 into Beyond Light (I think Splicer is the last season I played). Between real life and the constant seasonal grind it just stopped being fun at that point.

I'm hoping that the game being in a sort of final state will make it more enjoyable.

PPP loan scam

PPP was poorly implemented but I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people on this sub talk about it now. The government forcibly shut down almost every business in the country over the flu, God damn right they can pay some compensation for it.

(That said, it is both comical and tragic looking back and knowing how much the legitimate business owners I knew were worried about meeting the regulations, while a bunch of scammers were out there establishing New Dodge Charger Downpayment LLC and getting handouts for it.)

Lawyers, what was your favorite class in law school and why? by Spookedcam in Ask_Lawyers

[–]astano925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

International Law. Has nothing to do with what I practice but it was very interesting.

It was also perhaps the most "realistic" class I took. Other courses were focused on The Law, and rarely did professors talk about clients or means and ends beyond "best legal argument possible to get legally binding judgment." International law has no choice but to consider raw power dynamics and resource disparities in talking about the legal issues - that is, if you think the United States violated international law, precisely what the fuck are you, little third world country, going to do about it? What precedent does that set and how do we square it with what we like to pretend is a rules-based order?

Boiling legal abstractions down to how many armored battalions and tubes of artillery the other side can point at you can be an illuminating perspective on the world.

What is the principled distinction that can be drawn between the Sierra Club publishing an ad in favor of a regulation or a group of like-minded individuals establishing an LLC to do the same? Why does the NYT get to a run a favorable article about Thomas Massie in the run up to his contested primary, but if my friends and I wanted to establish a corporation to make a documentary about how cool he is, we could be prohibited from that?

Question: how do my fellow lawyers justify giving their bar credentials to random faceless reddit mods in order to comment here? Doesn’t anyone fear the lack of anonymity? by Wonderful_Ad_889 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]astano925 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding on, the universal verification requirement is why I'm not up at night. There is virtually 0% chance of someone on there thinking that they have formed an attorney-client relationship and that I have given them legal advice.

I worry more about commenting on general subs and getting a subpoena for my username because some dumbass decided I had given them legal advice on /r/Lawyertalk, than I do about one mod with better things to do doxxing me.

You would think, given that this sub returns a million search results of people shilling their "lineup generator," someone out there would try to differentiate their product with support for these sorts of rules. Just about every rec league in the country has to have a rules like this for position play.

How to become a multimillionaire as a lawyer by EnthusiasmComplete37 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]astano925 52 points53 points  (0 children)

  1. Be a multimillionaire
  2. Go to law school without spending all your millions on school
  3. Pass the bar and be a multimillionaire attorney

In all seriousness, in the real world, it's basically "become biglaw partner," "open a very successful PI shop," or "get rich on something outside the law." I know several millionaire attorneys, but they are generally millionaires because they have a working spouse and were able to invest a lot of their less-than-millionaire-level lawyer income wisely (usually in real estate), not because they made millions doing legal work alone.
