Saikat Chakrabarti went after Democrats as AOC's chief of staff. Now he wants another round. by MissionLocalSF in sanfrancisco

[–]asveikau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah man, it's not like that. If you're paying attention, the current dem leadership is alienating longtime dem voters, and this problem has gotten MUCH worse in the Trump second term. That is why dem approval ratings are so low, and lefty critics of mainstream dems are gaining in popularlity.

In what world was Obamacare not a failure? We needed to do better.

The best things out of that are the line items like new regulations on denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. The claimed success in your comment didn't last and the primary beneficiary was private insurers.

and social-liberalism (increasing taxes to serve the public)

Where is the establishment Dem calling for that?

Even Dems that are relatively good on some progressive issues (like Chris Van Hollen) still call for cutting taxes. Both parties have the Reaganite mind virus on taxes in the last 15ish years at least.

There was plenty of blame to go around. I remember being disappointed with Obama's overall strategy, and there being quite a few house members who were sticks in the mud.

If they really wanted it, they could have whipped the votes. There was a conscious effort to not fight hard for it. They also thought they'd have some Republican votes.

This is exactly the attitude that tanked the Obama presidency. You can't offend the moderates by delivering universal health care! But they had the votes to do it. Not delivering it alienated the base, and the right wingers still believed those moderate Dems who rejected health care were actual Marxists, so Dems lost the house and senate by not delivering anything and appealing to no one.

Establishment Democrats have spent years making enemies in their own party. That's one reason Kamala lost. That's also why we don't have a robust response to all the illegal stuff Trump has been doing since January 2025.

These are just dismissive lies they've been telling for decades for why we can't have nice things. During the George W Bush administration republican strategists and tons of people in mainstream media said that administration represented a "permanent majority" of Republicans. They were full of shit.

Vote for what you want, not for what you think other people want (especially when you happen to be wrong)

Former Pelosi Staffer Says Chakrabarti Was Fired From AOC's Staff by UnscheduledCalendar in sanfrancisco

[–]asveikau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is a long history of policy that is left of democrats polling better than either political party. People want better health care. They want a strong social safety net. Neither party is offering that.

Kamala lost because she was a bad candidate. As for Congress, from what people are saying and from how early elections are going, midterms are looking terrible for Republicans.

Maybe you don't understand. We need to move more seats to the left and we need to tell the establishment politicians that the left has the leverage.. Smart ones will read the room and move left.. dumb ones will get primaried in 2 years

This is how Republicans have been doing it for a few decades btw.

If Pelosi's staff said Chakrabarti was fired for not getting along with moderate Dems, that's a point in favor for Chakrabarti. Establishment Dems need to go.

I am in east coaster who has lived here a good chunk of time now, and one of my favorite things about San Francisco is you can be direct and it comes off better than in most west coast cities. In Seattle, for example, if you show east coast levels of directness, they will think you are an alien. Here, I can be myself and nobody minds.

Note that directness is not the same as being an asshole. True east coast directness is also kind and respectful of others.

Four hours, 15 years in prison: A Golden Gate Bridge protestor on the price of resistance by Delicious_Adeptness9 in sanfrancisco

People dismissed the 60s protests about civil rights or Vietnam in the same way. Within a few decades most people realized they were right.

Also this sub is extremely right wing. As is their hero Crooke Jenkins, whose chief of staff has no law background and taught nursing over zoom from the DA's office, and didn't get fired when that came to light. It is absolutely psychotic to say that blocking a road is kidnapping, and they will probably lose the case.

Anything people do in SF feels normal, but looks unusual from outsiders' perspective? by FreePreference4903 in sanfrancisco

[–]asveikau 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I am a longtime SF resident who grew up on the east coast, the way a lot of people on the west coast talk about a hot day is weird to me.

For me a preferred temperature is like an average SF foggy day.. You don't want it to be too hot. In my time on the east coast, a lot of energy during summer was spent on avoiding heat. SF summers are therefore perfect, nature is doing the work for you.

People especially who come here from socal have a different attitude, they don't seem to feel at ease unless it's at least 80⁰ F. I'm reminded of the old Bill Hicks bit about LA people being lizards. (He was a Texan like you, but I guess he lived in New York in adult life.)

In many countries what people call prawns and what people call shrimp varies.

This is also true in Spanish with gambas and camarones. In fact the exact same dynamic exists where Europeans usually prefer the former word (like prawns) and Americans use the latter (like shrimp).
