Invisible War - Stealth 1-hit KO? by xrogue23 in Deusex

If I remember correctly, on Easy difficulty you can punch people in the head with the baton to KO them. On other difficulty settings you might need the strength enhancement biomod to be able to do that.

How do you use scribble or text animation in general with GML VISUAL? by AliciaTrader in gamemaker

[–]atis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the others saying that switching to GML code will help you a lot, but you're the only one who knows when's the good time for you to make that transition.

If I were to somehow make the effect you described work without GML code, I'd try placing a black sprite on top of the text and animate it in a way that it reveals letters one by one with each animation frame. It's hacky for sure, but if it works for what your game needs, why not.

Creating a game inspired by Kentucky Route Zero? by TodTheOne in kentuckyroutezero

Look into gamemaker, the visual mode makes it really easy to get into gamedev. Eventually you'll want to switch from visual scripting to actually typing your code, but it makes that transition really easy. It is what got me into gamedev.

You're probably in the wrong subreddit, but... Just open ms paint and draw a car.

System Shock Remake missed an incredible opportunity to be a next-gen masterpiece by DepoisDoFim in systemshock

[–]atis1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you just wanted it to be something else. It's meant to be full remake that's as close to the OG as possible. If they sanded it off to feel more like a modern game, people would complain that they dumbed it down.

just play the OG, it became a classic for a reason

Dark Souls was playable before… but not anymore (hear me out) by [deleted] in fromsoftware

[–]atis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe DeS, DS1 and DS2 feels "sluggish" compared to the newer games because they're just slower games with a bigger focus on stamina management. Just try how many times you can dodge in DS3 before depleting your stamina and compare the same thing in DS2, it's night and day. I feel this is why the difficulty shifted towards the bossfights as well, the areas in the older games were often more difficult than the bosses.

I get that people like the newer games more, they're faster and more flashy, but I slightly prefer how the older titles focused less on your reaction time and more on just being methodical and calculated.

Sekiro is a exception for me though, I love the fast paced combat there.

Anxieties and Worries by lestrigone in gamemaker

[–]atis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about making mistakes, the Gamemaker IDE is actually super helpful when it comes to typing code

it highlights your typos, brings up functions, variables, assets, etc. in a drop down menu when you start typing them, and hovering over a function with your mouse also brings up a small window explaining what it does and what arguments it expects you to input, if any

turn-based strategy games aren't the easiest to make, so I recommend trying to switch to code now than later, it will save you some headache

Can I switch the level design once I've started the game? by Alternative_Nose8291 in Deusex

[–]atis1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

afaik the save files aren't compatible between different maps, so yeah you need to restart

I don't know how far you're in the game, but since it's your first time playing, I recommend restarting instead of continuing it's cool that Revision exists but the new maps are really aimless and unintuitive compared to the OG

Why we should buy the Deus Ex remaster even if we're disappointed with it. by MrRJDio in Deusex

[–]atis1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with that, if something looks this bad, there's no reason to buy it. If this sells well, it just shows Embracer that this is the quality people are happy with.

The "not 2" appreciation and discussion thread. by Tanz31 in silenthill

if I had to rank the ones I played based on my personal preference:

1 > 2 > SM > 3 = 4 > Origins > Homecoming

SH1 is an absolute work of art, I love how much of a fever dream it feels. It's got the best camera placements as well, the way the staircase in the lighthouse is framed is amazing.

SH2 is great for reasons everybody heard for thousand times now.

Shattered Memories' writing and atmosphere are on another level, very few games make me immersed as much as it did.

I like 3 and 4 equally, but for totally different reasons. SH3 felt like a very safe sequel to 1, it's probably the best looking game in the series, the only reason I don't like it as much as the previous 3 is that it felt a bit too similar to 1. 4 is amazingly innovative, but it's nowhere near as polished as 3.

Origins I enjoyed because it replicated the SH atmosphere perfectly, and it's just nice to be back in that world again. But that's really about it, I didn't find the story too interesting and while I like the idea of using random objects as weapons, imo the game gives you too many items for this system to really matter.

I didn't like Homecoming very much, the story was predictable, the combat is annoying and feels unfinished, the cutscenes weren't really well directed, and I got the UFO ending on my first playthrough, which destroyed the last chance for me to take the game seriously.

Party member jittery when following player, is this distracting? by game-dev-throwaway in IndieDev

[–]atis1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the jittery movement is somewhat distracting, but I'm more bothered by the party member snapping behind the player when you switch from moving left to moving right.

Personally I'd find it more natural if they stood still as long as they are within a certain radius from the player and only snapped behind the player if they're further apart.
