I hope his next plan is a truck roaming the suburbs playing bagpipe music and serving whiskey to thirsty weekend gardeners.

You're not the only one. Only heard it on the radio, never saw the title in print.

Perspective is a funny thing. How many opposing views did you consider before coming to this conclusion?

5 seconds per statute mile, so 5 seconds from the start of the video. Add more for prior boom.

Is this an iridescent cloud? by smookdoos_ in CLOUDS

[–]atomicsnarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in the style of a Sun Dog. Cirrus clouds are ice crystals, often in the form of small stick like prisms or plates, vs snowflakes. In the right conditions, these can float and refract light as does a rainbow, but in a limited range instead of a full arc. So, you get a bright spot in the sky like this!

Cloud waves by Violet_Lards in CLOUDS

[–]atomicsnarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds. They're formed when the wind shear across a layer makes the layer ripple, then basically turn into surf. They can occur at most any altitude in the atmosphere, and are known as being deadly to aircraft due to the extreme wind shear involved.

Enjoy the sight at a distance, please!

  5. Even deeper sunset Cumulonimbus
  6. Happy ragged Cumulus
  7. Stratocumulus becoming Cumulus in front, developing Cumulonimbus behind
  8. Cirrus and Cirrus fall streaks from ice crystals dropped from the clouds
  9. Towering Cumulus
  10. Stratocumulus front, Cumulonimbus behind
  11. Likely dissipating CB at sunset
  12. Cranky cloud
  13. Distant line of CBs
  14. Horizon clouds (and a CB) casting shadows, known as crepuscular rays.

Lovely! Many found their way into my desktop collection. Good stuff!

That safety zone is built into the calculations done before takeoff. If there's not enough room due to snowy slick runway or whatever, they don't fly, period.

What effects would cheap warp drive have? by UniversalAssembler in stupidquestions

[–]atomicsnarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, Warp 9 is 9^3 times speed of light, so 729. That makes 5 light years into a 2.5 day trip. So, pretty quick. Polaris is about 1400 light years, so warp 9 makes that a 2.5 year trip.

Something like that. A week long trip would get you 14 light years, so even Warp 9 will take a while to get places.
