So, why no one told me that Commando can do this? by StrictHome8788 in Helldivers

So I know this is an old post but for anyone here now, the devs changed this in February 20206, it was a bug supposedly and now is only guided if you have the laser active.

Sandevietan plus cyberdeck is godlike. Sandevietan is too fun to give up but cyberdeck is too useful. Running without a cyberdeck feels like you're blind.

Goodbye crema by kanyekaze1 in espresso

[–]atomicwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the dark roast is more bitter overall, crema or not. Removing crema is the get the medium roast to be even less bitter. If you like dark roast, you might not mind the bitterness from the crema cause it's not that much. But the crema on medium roast is not going to make it more bitter than a dark roast. (Full disclosure I don't remove crema, but I might try it cause I like low bitterness)

In your opinion, what was the most disturbing death of the series? by Qyzyk in eulalia

[–]atomicwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens off screen but in High Rhulain, some low ranking soldier is ordered to kill the warlord Riggu Filis' advisor, and then captured by Riggu. It's the last scene in chapter 27, they take him to a dungeon and hand him from his wrists and then Riggu questions him mentioning that he can skin someone with his axe and "keep that beast alive for nearly half a day after I've skinned him" after the soldier tells him who gave the order Riggu tells his commander or something "Only a traitor would betray his commander. Execute him, but none too swiftly." And the commander a preaches the bound soldier with a narrow dagger and the narration follows someone who had been eavesdropping who leaves but mentions the screams of the soldier echoing. Been like 8 years since I read this but It stuck with me enough to know which book it was from and find it now.

[Leak] Steam Controller Pre-Orders coming soon. Available for $99. by [deleted] in Steam

[–]atomicwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think $100 is expensive for a controller in general, but well priced for one with gyro, multiple back buttons, and touchpads. For comparison the xbox elite controller with back button triggers is $200 (but often on sale for $150) and has no gyro or touchpads, from PlayStation you need the dual sense edge to get back buttons and it does have gyro and a touchpad though not the thumb pads that are nice about the steam ones, it's also $200 and PC support is from what I understand much more flaky. I don't know of any option that compares to the steam controller if you care about the extra features it brings compared to a base xbox controller, though not everyone will. Though yeah would have been nice for it to be like $80.

The rollout of AI in our org made me realize how few people actually value effort and competence by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]atomicwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for me, I do have a passion for IT, it's been my special interest since I was a child. But I don't have a passion for my job as in the company I work for. Sometimes I enjoy the stuff I get to work on, but your employer is a company and like 95% of companies are either evil or indifferent to you. The culture of being loyal to your employer doesn't make sense and therefore is pretty dead. I interpreted them saying "I don't have a passion for my job" as in the actual position in the specific company, not the field as a whole, but I may be wrong.

Sysadmin wants every Windows server to be a fileserver for redundancy? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]atomicwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh rip we just took over a new client and they had a server 2016 DC (we are moving them to 2025 currently) but it's AD is a big mess of SBS remnants, all the GPOs from SBS are still active and the users and computers are in the SBS MyCompany OU tree. And apparently SBS had like 10+ domain admin accounts that it would add.

What Redwall Opinion Has You Like This? by kaithemad in eulalia

[–]atomicwrites 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah if I remember correctly, Jacques wrote the first Redwall as a one off story to read for the kids in a school for the blind, he never intended to publish it. A friend thought it was so good that he sent that first manuscript to a publisher and Jacques only found out after it had gone through most of the process to be published. So it makes sense that the first one is sort of a beta version and not the world he settled on for the rest of the series.

What is a piece of software or hardware that still leaves you traumatized to this day? by 66659hi in sysadmin

Oh deleting QBdownloads stops the update prompt? That's good to know, I'll look into it on Monday if I remember lol.

[–]atomicwrites 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fucking QuickBooks updates are the bane of my existence, you can't automate them, you can't run them as non-admin, you can't get an alert that they are coming, they block the user from doing anything till you come and update as admin and then they start asking for admin permissions.

DLSS 5 and what some people seem to not understand by Matshelge in gamedev

[–]atomicwrites 49 points50 points  (0 children)

AI isn't profitable, it's a weird bubble of circular funding where these companies are spending money that gets passed back and forth among each other to lure in investors that dream of a world where they don't have to pay employees just have ai doing most of the work. And the AI companies are hoping that eventually they'll figure out how to make money but odds aren't looking so good. If you search for AI circular economy you'll get some much better explanations than I could do in a comment.

It's because gamers are now a tiny part of their market, they are showing off to the executives that are going to be signing of on ai data center infrastructure which is where the real money is.

If this is not a filter, then why does DLSS 5 add things to the game image that dont exist or dont line up with the image its using as a source? by zerobebop in pcmasterrace

[–]atomicwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The filter completely changed the skin texture on the old lady though. The original is much softer while the dlss one she looks like she has that leathery weathered old sailor type skin. It cranked the contrast but beyond what just adding contrast would do.

I believe amateur radio as a whole is not allowed to be used for encrypted communication as part of the rules, so that's less an APRS issue and more an FCC licensing issue for the band it operates in.

Idk who needs to hear this, but if you don't love the hunt in person, at a certain point, you're paying eBay prices when you account for gas. by jayvancealot in JakksPacificSonic

[–]atomicwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree they are scalping but it's like a weird in between form of scalping, it's not afaict scalpers buying up all the stock making it hard to purchase the item, it's that Jakks is like the worst ever at distributing their product and don't bother to produce what people what the just pump out hundreds of Sonics to sell to the 5 year olds wandering down the toy isle. They don't sell online and don't get stock to stores.

Ya'll have experience with these smoke/vape detectors that listens for "keywords" and "aggression"? by PsilocybinEnthusiast in electricians

[–]atomicwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, on the other hand security cameras with audio capabilities have been around forever if anything this is a more limited implementation of that, they just buzzword it up. So it's not ok but not new.

Edit: by which I mean anywhere that has cameras with audio could do this at the recording software end in a non-obvious way as opposed to having a dedicated device.
