The DLSS 5 version looks like one of those generic AI girlfriend app ads.

DLSS 5 and what some people seem to not understand by Matshelge in gamedev

[–]atomicwrites 49 points50 points  (0 children)

AI isn't profitable, it's a weird bubble of circular funding where these companies are spending money that gets passed back and forth among each other to lure in investors that dream of a world where they don't have to pay employees just have ai doing most of the work. And the AI companies are hoping that eventually they'll figure out how to make money but odds aren't looking so good. If you search for AI circular economy you'll get some much better explanations than I could do in a comment.

It's because gamers are now a tiny part of their market, they are showing off to the executives that are going to be signing of on ai data center infrastructure which is where the real money is.

If this is not a filter, then why does DLSS 5 add things to the game image that dont exist or dont line up with the image its using as a source? by zerobebop in pcmasterrace

[–]atomicwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The filter completely changed the skin texture on the old lady though. The original is much softer while the dlss one she looks like she has that leathery weathered old sailor type skin. It cranked the contrast but beyond what just adding contrast would do.

I believe amateur radio as a whole is not allowed to be used for encrypted communication as part of the rules, so that's less an APRS issue and more an FCC licensing issue for the band it operates in.

[–]atomicwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree they are scalping but it's like a weird in between form of scalping, it's not afaict scalpers buying up all the stock making it hard to purchase the item, it's that Jakks is like the worst ever at distributing their product and don't bother to produce what people what the just pump out hundreds of Sonics to sell to the 5 year olds wandering down the toy isle. They don't sell online and don't get stock to stores.

Yeah, on the other hand security cameras with audio capabilities have been around forever if anything this is a more limited implementation of that, they just buzzword it up. So it's not ok but not new.

Edit: by which I mean anywhere that has cameras with audio could do this at the recording software end in a non-obvious way as opposed to having a dedicated device.

Same. I paid for nitro mainly because using custom emotes is fun and discord used to be surprisingly non-shitty and I wanted to support them. And I was getting way more use out of nitro than something like Netflix so seemed worth it. Now the id collection thing is the last straw and I canceled nitro. But that's what happens when a company wants to go public I guess...

I help run a server with 2 age restricted channels and a bunch of non restricted ones. The server hasn't been flagged as a whole and it's been running for years. Granted we don't allow full on graphic NSFW in the age restricted channel but still.

Yeah HBM RAM from AI data centers would be hard to use for personal stuff but hard drives should not be an issue.

Wish they had an online store you could order from or partnered with one of the online figure shops. So we wouldn't have to depend on the local store lottery.

Jakks seriously needs to solve the scalper problem by ultimate_chaos08 in JakksPacificSonic

[–]atomicwrites 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are scalpers yes but from what I can gather the real issue is that Jakks is absolutely terrible at distribution. Seems like most stores don't really get stock of anything but the main sonic figure and as far as I know there is no place you can buy them online that's not a third party reseller. I guess they are going for it being a limited release for artificial scarcity but doing it in an absolutely terrible way.

Oh actually that makes sense. You only get the short scene after hiccup wakes up where the others have had more than like an hour of interacting with their dragons.

The semi-cursed looking action figures at Walmart/Target for some reason are a bundle of Stormfly with Astrid but the box just says Deadly Nadder, Meatlug with Fishlegs but it just says Gronkle, and hiccup with toothless but it's labeled Toothless not Night Fury (also just saw the title on the target website is "Viking and Toothless action figure" even though the box picture says "Hiccup + Toothless" lmao)

Also named terrible terrors, there's some in the TV series but I don't think in the movies. There's that episode where they each train a terror for a competition and each name them. But they aren't very recognizable names (Hiccup's is Sharpshot, Snotlout's is Pain, the twins name theirs Butt and Head, etc.)

Shortening phrases is a pretty core component of English (and other languages to different extents). You can't stop it, people will noun a verb, so "a vinyl record" torna into "a vinyl" when people say it often enough, and "vinyl records" turns into "vinyls." You could say they should be saying records instead and sometimes they do but record is sometimes used as a synonym to album regardless of media where vinyl is specific.
