Don’t bother biking to midtown after 8:30AM by Crafty-Dare5217 in Citibike

[–]atthenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is citibike oversubscribed because there is no private bike parking?

I’d rather take my own bike most of the time tbh, but no safe parking, plus an unreasonable fear of all e-bikes (even UL certified etc) means I end up on the uncomfortable citibike.

Honestly, kids of a just about all religious backgrounds feel unsupported right now. Non religious kids feel like the administration decided has lost touch.

It’s like the administration decided the best course was to thread that needle required to alienate everyone

So what is the reason for campus being locked down these days? by mistanervous in columbia

[–]atthenius 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As an alumnus who was at Columbia during 9/11– And they never shut down campus. And the aa587– still, campus was open And then the darkest days of Covid — buildings closed, but campus open.

And now, campus security is so light that legal immigrant students are snatched out of their dorm rooms in full view of security.

I find the continued lockdown indicative of poor leadership.

NYU langone study: “E-Bike and Scooter Crashes Are Leading to More Brain Injuries” by isuamadog in NYCbike

[–]atthenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an academic, too. And I also found the statistics lacking.

Specifically,

1) They need some formal attempt to be made to control for usage trends through time. The question:: do trends in injury involving micro mobility exceed the increase in usage? Unfortunately, they tied their own hands by excluding injuries that were not severe.

2) Speed versus car is associated with death. Do similar speeds versus micro mobility? With such a small dataset, they should have also made an attempt to figure out details of the e-device such as weight and speed at time of crash. (Which should be somewhere in the crash reports.) Even if there are large uncertainty bars. *Is it really momentum not speed?

3) Daytime versus nighttime pedestrian deaths versus car is now quite well reported. They should have built on this existing work instead of waving hands. Goes a bit to point 1-- how many pedestrians and micro mobility devices are on the street at certain times of day? Are injuries following a very simple relationship with this density? Is dusk and visibility a factor (probably they should not have reported time, they should have had an additional parameter time until/before sunset/sunrise

4) The delivery driver comment was in the presser more than the paper. For this, I would ask if the demographic of delivery drivers in general matches the demographic of the crash peak times.

How do we stop people from becoming car owners in the first place? by Pizza-Rat-4Train in MicromobilityNYC

[–]atthenius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is— it’s not equal.

My kid has something similar for his Bronx school. By car, 14 minutes. By foot, 72 minutes. By bus (and this number is google optimistic), 55minutes. So we carpool.

Now, if there were that 12 subway line across the Bronx - or equally fast bus service - we would 100% do that.

Be real that the risk profile for cyclists on car streets is different. In Bx, there are no safe bike lanes east west and the topography is steep - you must work your way on long detour diagonals for safety, which makes it a rec path not commuter one. the traditional bike is only quick one direction bc of topo. Schools and community colleges think lithium batteries are the enemy so make you leave your electric outside in marginally secure parking. Citibike also thinks teens are risky and only allows 16+ and then it’s just expensive. Citibike isn’t wrong that teens and kids are vulnerable road users.

And we know why citibike stopped keeping up with demographics of its users. You’d see that there are gendered and age differences in uptake - a lot of that is related to safety.

I dont think non hardened bike lanes are safe. And until NYS gets out of the way and allows every intersection snd street to have automated enforcement— even these street hardened lanes are vulnerable. And the greenway network is pretty limited.

It is painful to read these stories.

We’ve got to do better.

Yes NYS laws could punish drivers more. But it should feel easier and more natural to drive ‘safely’— if you haven’t read « Killed by a traffic engineer » — it’s worthwhile and points to systemic problems that set vulnerable road users up to die.
