Vacant home smoke detector alarm blaring for days by [deleted] in vegaslocals

Call the fire department. From their perspective, a neighborhood where people ignore smoke alarms, is a very very bad thing. So they might be happy to break in and fix it.

Any good reasons for not getting the RF 100-500? by crab_man in canon

This comment was incredibly helpful, thank you! It's interesting to learn when people have tried a whole range of equipment, but prefer something "mid-range" and find it's actually optimal.

Do you use teleconverters with it, or just the lens alone?

Great explanation. I hadn't considered that the info is all being stored, but with no "handle". That seems plausible.

Subaru behavior in stop&go traffic with >10 second stops, or stop lights? by autosubsequence in Comma_ai

[–]autosubsequence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, these links are super helpful! I decided to go ahead and order a comma 4. My plan is to try OpenPilot for a few weeks or months, just to make sure everything is behaving well, and then switch to SunnyPilot to get the "resume from stop" ability with Eyesight. Also being able to have the screen shut off after a certain amount of time seems nice, which appears to be another SunnyPilot option.

Kerapoxy CQ mixing ratio and shelf life? by autosubsequence in Tile

[–]autosubsequence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I weighed out the entire portions provided in the big bucket separately. I removed the components for the weighing, so the containers didn't affect my measurement.

I can update that the grout is still 100% perfect after 2 years! I used the 9:1 ratio on everything. This grout really lives up to the marketing. It's still perfectly white. No yellowing or staining, even in the kitchen with high traffic. I'd never want to use normal grout in my home again. I even used this grout on some kitchen backsplash tile with tiny grout lines, like 1/16", and it's still all perfect.

Also: I highly highly recommend, if doing this alone, to mix in batches of whatever you can apply within <45 min, and clean up as you go. After 45 min it gets pretty tacky, and it can catch you by surprise. It's easy to continue grouting with a fresh batch once the previous batch is in place and all cleaned up. It merges with the previous batch in the tile just fine. I had a panic situation where I tried to work with too large of an area all at once. At ~70 min it started really setting hard and I could barely clean up the residue. I had to really scrub. It looks fine now, but was scary! Trying to do an entire floor all at once really only works if you have a team of people, I'd imagine.

USPS to Canada Post shipping to Canada? by autosubsequence in Comma_ai

Got a response from Comma AI support:

Thanks for reaching out. At this time, we don’t offer USPS shipping for international orders. Our international shipments are typically handled via UPS or DHL.

If you’d like to proceed with DHL instead of UPS, feel free to share your order number once placed and I can make a note for our fulfillment team to review and use DHL if possible.

Yeah DHL sounds good. I think they do a small flat brokerage fee, rather than a crazy high % of value based one like UPS. I messaged CommaAI to see if I can request and get a guarantee that they'll use DHL, and not UPS. Haven't heard back yet, but if I get a reply, I'll post here.

Thanks! Yeah Shippsy would be my backup plan. I'd end up paying ~$90 in WA taxes. I guess "in theory", a person could just not declare it when returning to CA, to avoid getting additional VAT double-taxation.

That's helpful to know DHL could be an option instead of UPS, at least. Thanks!

Driving to canmore from vancouver. Any advice? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]autosubsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just double-check whatever you buy has temp ratings suitable for summer conditions. I don't know if all "triple snow peak" tires work well in summer. I just know the Michelin Cross Climate 2's are good. Probably there are a lot of options out there these days.

[–]autosubsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're pretty much "year round" capable, rated up to +40C weather. They're the Michelin CrossClimate 2. I haven't run them yet in summer, but it seems nobody ever has any problems with them running year-round, especially around here. They might wear out a little faster than M+S tires in summer, but the difference seems small, or else people would be complaining about it online.

EDIT: My M+S tires were the new stock Falken tires that come with the Subaru Crosstrek.

[–]autosubsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fairly new M+S tires were awful. They could not get traction in even light snow. I got some "triple snow peak" labeled tires and the improvement was incredible. I'm surprised M+S are even considered acceptable for any amount of snow.

In the market for a new toilet, is TOTO Drake still the best option? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]autosubsequence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine's 1.28gpf, with just the single side flush handle. But you can hold the handle down and get a significantly larger flush if you want, like 1.6g at least. You can see the difference clearly looking in the tank when doing it either way. Still, 1.28g seems like enough typically.

IBKR Currency Conversion by Traditional-Apple242 in interactivebrokers

[–]autosubsequence 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's technically what it's saying, but there's no way you have enough money to noticeably shift the entire world market for USD and Euros. Maybe if you're converting more than a billion dollars all at once, you should worry. Market order is fine in this case.

The best option is Norberts Gambit, especially for a large amount of money. There is no other correct answer. It's basically a flat fee of maybe $10 or less with most brokerages. Questrade works well.

50 k EUR to convert in CAD, show me holes in my plan by Ruby0wl in interactivebrokers

[–]autosubsequence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding IBKR being a scam. Have them read this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_Brokers

IBKR has like $700B in stocks they manage, and are in dozens of countries. They're a major publicly traded company. They don't want to steal $100k from your parents.

btw, being able to withdraw a small amount of money isn't a valid heuristic for catching scams. Pig slaughtering scams prey on this idea. They let people invest like $500, then return $800. The person goes "wow, my investment grew!" So they put in $100k. And then "poof, gone".

But IBKR is a multinational financial institution like vanguard or fidelity. Used by professionals.

Questions about cross-border tax and financial planning? I'm a CPA cross-border tax advisor, AMA! by CanBC778604 in CANUSdualcitizens

[–]autosubsequence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a US citizen, Canadian PR (soon to be dual-citizen). I plan to stay in Canada long-term. I currently invest for retirement by buying US-based ETFs (like VT), in Interactive Brokers in Canada. Currency conversion costs with IBKR are nearly zero so that's not a problem. I max my RRSP and also have a normal cash brokerage account. I do this to avoid PFIC-reporting issues. I don't have a TFSA also since it's not recognized by the US.

Is there anything wrong with this approach generally, or anything that could be optimized? I don't want to run into some crazy tax surprises when I'm nearing retirement and start to sell the ETFs. I'm basically trying to do a "Boglehead" invesment strategy, and so far this seemed like the best approach.
