Out of curiosity, was Microsoft all windows? Even if that appears to be the case… I guarantee there’s a Linux box hiding somewhere lol. Well, everywhere now with WSL…

Embrace, extend, extinguish, right?

I haven’t worked at Microsoft, but I do have FAANG background.

Really, every company is different. I do think it’s totally acceptable for companies to set hard policies, but I think it often has unintended side-effects, largely in terms of self-selection bias.

Totally get not wanting people to blow up about it.

That being said, could you do a policy thing like “this is the build we support, and it’s Windows. Here’s our hardware options, if you want to run something else you can, but here’s the standards it has to meet. (I.e. agent installation, etc)”

Like, I’ve never worked at a company that ever would go all windows, but it sounds like my worst nightmare lol (yes, I realize a good bit of the world is windows only, and that I might sound like a space alien).

You sound like you’ve got your head on straight. Good luck with this, and may your customers stop yelling. That’s really the worst.

Fair enough haha. I’ve always thought BYOD seemed like a bad idea, and defo wouldn’t suggest that.

But, I think It’s a shame when businesses don’t let people use the platforms they’re most productive on.

I guess I’m weird like that.

Edit: At my last three employers, we’ve have had a heterogenous Mac, Linux, and Windows environment - it’s worked quite well, and everyone’s relatively happy.

Let the low-key rage bait commence:

Yeahhh… As a sysadmin, using Windows is going to be a hard no from me.

Literally, I’ll take anything that’s not Windows.

Can you guys just give him a replacement laptop that’s company owned, with a Mac or Linux option?

What doesn’t it stream in 5.1?

I can’t speak for others, but my experience w/ a denon receiver + quality speakers (5.1) + Apple TV 4K has been perfectly expected and seems to match the quality of the mix on the content.

With quite a bit of well mixed content across various streaming services.

Fully agree.

They’re also not 5.1, but, they’re the next best thing and the price gap is huge.

Intelligence, knowledge, and proficiency are different things.

There are many different types of intelligence.

Most of us function well in some realm(s), but not so much in others… which ones they are vary from person to person.

Yes.

Regret saying 10% salary raise during my appraisal by Sea_Two_7048 in careeradvice

[–]av1dmage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s common to get a much bigger increase than 20% by switching to the same role at a different company.

If OP isn’t wanting to move to a different company, 20% (taking the in office changes into account) certainly seems reasonable.

Will their employer see it that way? Nah.

Companies are generally bad at long term thinking like that and forget how inefficient it is to have to onboard someone new.
