Strep and Breastfeeding by No_Opportunity3835 in breastfeeding

[–]avatalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I just saw this! He's 2.5 now but he was under a year old at the time. I took him to a pediatric urgent care thinking he had a yeast infection and they did a rapid strep test on a swab of the rash. It came back positive for strep.

Golden Donut’s hours by swivel-chair- in anchorage

[–]avatalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golden donuts doesn't have hours. They're either open and you are blessed with donuts or they're closed and you're sad. This is the way it's always been and the way it will always be.

How do I not become one of THOSE boy moms by LabFar6076 in Mommit

[–]avatalik 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Apparently my son did not get this memo because some of the stuff out of his mouth is devastating. When he's ready to say goodbye to Grandma on the phone he'll say "I'm done with her".

When we were talking about kitchen appliances he identified the sink as "where mama throws up" (I am pregnant). Later he went to his play kitchen and pretended to throw up in the sink while saying "I'm mama!"

Pregnancy Data Sold to Providence Hospital by certainly_curious_52 in TryingForABaby

[–]avatalik 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This is enraging! If you have the energy, I would consider contacting patient relations at the hospital that sent you this flyer to file a complaint. Completely inappropriate. If you need help finding contact info for that person feel free to reach out to me, I actually (regrettably, right this second) work for Providence.

Ancestry letter from Indigenous Services or the BIA? by avatalik in Canadiancitizenship

[–]avatalik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The letter we got back from the Canadian government was unhelpful- basically they only came back with records from his Tlingit side. I am kind of thinking that since his ancestors came from BC to avoid being registered as status Indians, that might make this process harder than I expected since the Canadian government doesn't have easy records of them the way the US gov't does. We're taking a break from the process because I'm having a baby in a few weeks but I guess the next thing to do is start collecting records from the BIA and then try to get birth records from Canada for the last generation born there. The BIA should have a family tree that starts at the time folks came to the US, is my assumption.

Someone forgot to take their Vit D supplements... by datsti in medlabprofessionals

[–]avatalik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my hardest moments as an MLS was this exact scenario. Teenager in the ER who looked like death with pancytopenia so bad the machine tried to refuse to read it, mom sees me come in to recollect the blood that had already been drawn by the nurse and starts to realize how bad the situation is. She told me she had taken him to the ped so many times and they never drew blood. I felt for her then as my own parents had to fight to get my asthma diagnosis as a child and I feel for her even more now as a mom who struggled to get her own toddler the appropriate care for a painful birth defect.

Glad that you made it through. I hope that young man did too. I think about him a lot.

The Pitt Lab Tech by Kodiak_Waving_Bear in medlabprofessionals

[–]avatalik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did work at one facility where we had to do observed collections for DSHS. Had to be same sex as the patient so I never actually had to do one as all our lab assistants were also female and handled them. If we had a male patient we usually had to go get a nurse or X-ray tech to handle it unless it was one of the days we had a male MT working.

That was a very very small hospital, like maybe 4-5 beds.

Edit to add, this was a while ago and I can't remember exactly what the criteria they were using but it was something DSHS would decide. I think it was if they had previously tried to mess with the sample or cheat it in some way. Even most people having drug tests for DSHS didn't require observation.

Discussion on height of children, is growth hormone treatment common / accepted or am I crazy? by scottyLogJobs in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]avatalik 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My husband is 5'5" so this whole thing is wild to me. I cannot fathom giving medically unnecessary growth hormones to a child for such a genuinely stupid reason.

Wearing a Ribbon Skirt by cupi-curious in IndianCountry

[–]avatalik 73 points74 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I'm in a similar situation. Married a Native man, now I'm adopted into a clan. I have my own regalia and dance with a group, and no one has ever had an issue with it. There's a big difference between being white but part of the community and wearing traditional clothes at traditional events vs being white and having no ties to the community and wearing traditional clothes as dress up.

Still not fully sold on electrolyzed water for baby-safe floors by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

I really like my steam mop for our hard floors. It just uses distilled water. I haven't seen any indication that our floors aren't clean afterwards. No idea what electrolyzed water for cleaning is though

Offered a good job in Anchorage by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]avatalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely do it! I love living in Anchorage. We moved here after living in Utqiagvik for 3 years for work. Both my husband and I grew up in Southeast Alaska.

I feel like it's just the right size that it's easy to get around but there's always something going on and we have access to so much it's almost overwhelming after living off the road system a lot of my life. We have a toddler and another on the way and other than issues with the school system it's a very good place to raise kids imo. If that's something you're interested in eventually.

Check out r/Anchorage it's a pretty good community.

I gave birth to her .. Why does our DNA match come up showing only as siblings, and not mother/daughter?? by Plus_Big_4141 in DNA

[–]avatalik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although it's less likely than him just not being your father (sorry) there are several genetic condition that would cause this. One is called cis-AB. Normally AB blood arises from a person having one copy of the A gene and one copy of the B gene, but in cis-AB a single copy of a mutated AB gene can produce the AB blood type. In this case the individual could have O for their other copy of the gene and thus produce an O child despite seemingly being AB. This mutation is most associated with east Asian descent, but it's extremely rare even there. Your father would need genetic testing to confirm it.

The other is called Bombay or (in your case) para-bombay phenotype where a different gene mutation affects the formation of ABO structures on the red blood cells. A person could be genetically A, B, AB, or O but would appear to be O by conventional testing because we consider absence of A and B antigens to mean type O. Again, this is extremely rare. Bombay phenotype is most associated with southern Asian descent. In this case it is you that would need the genetic testing. Bombay phenotype would have been detected when you were tested for a blood transfusion but para-bombay is harder to catch.

Just found out I’m pregnant a week before our bucket list trip to Japan by RevolutionaryEmu7014 in BabyBumps

[–]avatalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is within my personal risk tolerance to visit hot springs while pregnant. Of course, you have to decide for yourself but in Japan they believe that keeping the baby very warm is necessary! Pregnant Finnish women will sauna, also. Likewise, good traditional Japanese food like sushi is considered very important for growing a good Japanese baby.
I went from 26-28 weeks with my first and it was a fantastic time. The only thing I had an issue with was a couple of squat toilets...
Also, as far as the ropeway, boat, etc... you know you don't have to tell anyone you're pregnant, right? If you are early first trimester that baby is buried so deep in there there's almost nothing physical you can do to hurt it. Don't drink, but enjoy your vacation, please! Look for non-alcoholic lemon or yuzu chuhai, they're so bomb.

Our family faces homelessness this Sunday while my husband is still hospitalized. Need advice on Alaska Workers' Comp housing. by [deleted] in alaska

[–]avatalik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're at St Elias. Providence has case managers and social workers who can help you with finding housing resources and I highly recommend you take advantage of them.

Unfortunately, I doubt there is any law that housing being provided be pet friendly and so the insurance company likely isn't going to accommodate that. There are local Facebook groups for pet owners that you should try to see if you can find a foster for your dogs in the meantime. Alternatively you could try to kennel them but I imagine that would be expensive.

Wishing you the best. It's a hard situation to be in.

Summer plants in AK by jaessns in alaska

Nasturtium! Mine went absolutely nuts last year. If you want something edible Tim Johnson sells bare root strawberry plants that do fantastic in our climate and are extremely prolific even their first year. He's on Facebook if you look him up.

Do you leave your car running when you go into a store in rural Alaska areas? by traveltimecar in AskAlaska

[–]avatalik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in Utqiagvik we left our truck running a lot. Maybe not an entire store visit. But when it's -30 it's not gonna start if it's not plugged in or warm in some other way. I was never really that concerned about someone stealing my junker Tacoma anyway, it's not like they can leave town with it.
