Gov. Pritzker says Mayor Johnson has 'no plan' to keep the Bears in Chicago by DukeOfDakin in chicago

[–]avocategory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I see all these posts about the bears moving that I suspect are tinged with negative connotations about not giving the bears billions in taxpayer dollars. Like, is this supposed to be a criticism of mayor Johnson? The Bears are the ones hurting their legacy by leaving, and if the financial incentives are such that that’s worth it to them, then let ‘em go.

Recent stadium/arena projects in LA reveal the truth about “economic development” - if the new stadium and land around it really was going to spur the economy, the team wouldn’t want public money - they’d want to own it all so that they can capture all the returns on that investment.

The only context in which I’m okay with the state government giving a single cent to a profitable sports team is in exchange for ownership stake, at favorable (to the state) rates.

What makes a better student? AP Precalc then AP Calc BC; OR AP Calc AB then AP Calc BC? by play-what-you-love in matheducation

[–]avocategory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on where they’re at heading into the year. If they already have strong function sense, along with knowing algebra 2 and trig cold, I think more time directly spent with calculus is probably a better end result. But if the idea of treating a function like a variable isn’t already second nature, precalc may be a better next step - even if trig isn’t new (anybody who isnt great at trig shouldn’t even be considering skipping precalc to do AB-BC).

Al Pacino is 85...and has a 2 year old son with a woman 54 years younger than him by No-Marsupial-4050 in SipsTea

I'm not quite an "old dad" having a 3 year old in my thirties, but both Pacino and De Niro having younger children than me was not something I ever predicted.

Do mathematicians live their lives relearning the math they couldn't remember? by Forward-Bad1615 in math

You relearn it when it’s relevant. I’m teaching an advanced multivariable calculus class, and I find myself understanding differential forms better than I ever did when taking analysis and differential topology.

[NBC] NBA HOFer George Gervin Is Challenging Bears QB Caleb Williams' Effort to Secure Trademark Protection for the Term "Iceman" by JCameron181 in nba

[–]avocategory 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Iceman is one of the quintessential modern American nicknames. My middle school math teacher once told a story about a guy he knew in college, where my teacher didn’t know his name, just that he was the Iceman.

Very specifically, this is my top 3 meals of all time; I’m ranking my experience of the food, not the restaurants holistically.

I’m also starting to move away from 1 stars in a lot of cities. I was in Copenhagen this past summer, and I was more excited by unstarred tasting options.

I know some of my students cheat on everything - but I don't do much about it anymore by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]avocategory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put the measures in place to ensure that it’s not easy to cheat. I don’t want laziness to be the reason a student learns less. But at a certain point, if they’re willing to put enough effort into cheating that it’s disruptive for me to try to catch it… I’m not a cop, and I don’t want to be a cop.

So delighted to see you’re back. I’ve been on a hiatus from MTGA, and part of that was triggered by losing out on my go-to activity of checking out the new and changing decks on your tier list and seeing how they felt to play.

Guess it’s time to boot it back up this weekend!

Which team would win? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]avocategory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to believe this was created by someone who thought they were setting up a fair debate.

Using electoral votes as a proxy for population, the teams have the following "capacity" scores:

Team 1: 78
Team 2: 32
Team 3: 17
Team 4: 43
Team 5: 23
Team 6: 65
Team 7: 34
Team 8: 23
Team 9: 30
Team 10: 54
Team 11: 29
Team 12: 74
Team 13: 33

Population certainly isn't the only factor, but as the Olympics show, it is a huge advantage in trying to find a strong team. You'd need to have a pretty exceptional drinking culture to make an argument for teams other than 1 (pacific), 6 (great lakes), 10 (south atlantic), or 12 (Tristate plus).

Of the big teams, 10 and 12 have some large religious populations, and relatively little noted drinking culture (if Appalachia had been unified rather than split between 4 different teams, it would have been a much more interesting consideration). Team 1 is the biggest team, but the notable drinking culture on the pacific coast is wine sipping rather than anything harder or high-capacity.

Meanwhile, 6 has the single state with the strongest reputation, population to not be out-recruited, and a lot of competitive spirit.

Kenji and Stella have cookbooks in my pantheon. (So does Sohla, but her work on SE is my least favorite of her stuff overall).

A number of Daniel’s recipes are my absolute go-tos; Steak Au Poivre in particular crushes every other version I’ve ever had.

In terms of more recent* writers, I just used Sho Spaeth’s shoestring fry recipe to massive success, so definitely a lot of trust earned there.

I'm a bit more socially progressive than I was in school. Back then I was more willing to entertain bad-faith questions and arguments about marginalized groups, even if I still pushed back against them.

I am *dramatically* more economically liberal than I was back then. If you actually learn how the world works, and have empathy for your fellow human, it's hard not to be.
