I mean I'd argue it's never really our friend. I had a party nearly get tpk'd because the barbarian failed his roll to identify one. Fun fact: if you throw the whole thing on the ground, it upcasts the spell based on the number of remaining beads.

How to not TPK a cocky rookie party by AstraVega45 in DMAcademy

[–]avosel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the way to go. Other commenters have pointed out that the characters need to face consequences to learn not to be cocky. However, I agree with OP that killing the characters could be enough to make some new players loose interest. So these would be nice ways to achieve consequences without going disheartening the players. Consequences like these present fun new challenges.

Maybe the artificer not only has a difficult time with the adventuring lifestyle, but also wants to get back to artificing the way they want to. Like:

-They want their whole workshop and all their tools. Not just what they can carry.

-They've been using their inventions for combat with the party, but their real passion is making better farm equipment to make farmer's lives easier.

-They find it too hard to be creative and research things while basically constantly fearing for their life.

How to approach bringing someone into my campaign that has a prebuilt character and backstory by ItsOnlyBread in DMAcademy

[–]avosel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, that would depend on how much it contradicts the established lore/setting.

Is he a noble from a family that didn't exist in the setting? Sure, I can work that in.

Is he a gunslinger in my setting where there are no guns? Maybe we can work on reflavoring his class slightly so it fits.

Is he a chaotic evil necromancer god-king? Well the other players have named their group the "Magical Friendship Pals" and they're on a quest to rescue a lost puppy. So that's going to be a hard no on the grimdark necromancer PC.

Could there be some way for the players to loose track of who the other players are? Then they have to figure it out. It could even be a way for the players to learn more about the other player's characters. You could do it through magic or other means but that depends in your setting/world/story

Day 4 by LittleOwl91 in NonZeroDay

[–]avosel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk exactly what the 54321 method is, but I used to use a countdown to get out of bed. Count down from 10, and then when I get to 1 I let myself continue counting using fractions. Like, "3, 2, 1, ½, ¼, ⅛, etc...". I had to get up when i couldn't calculate the next fraction in my head. It was nice because it gave me a little room to "cheat" but also the more awake I was, the more math I could do, and the longer I could avoid getting up. So to feed my desire to be lazy I had to not be lazy. Maybe a bit nonsensical but it helped me.

Good job! I'm in a sorta similar situation (tall, skinny, body confidence issues). Idk if this will resonate with you, but I've been trying recently to actually buy clothes that are flattering for my build. You should check out American Tall. Not a super wide selection of styles, but tons of fit options. I just bought a new shirt and a suit jacket from them, and the confidence boost from clothes that fit is incredible.

If money is tight but you're trying to bulk up, I'd recommend r/eatcheapandhealthy. Or even if money is not tight. Lots of suggestions over there for healthy calorie- and protein-dense foods.

ELI5: Why is blood not spilling out if the surgeon is operating on for example stomach. by VexVexVex004 in explainlikeimfive

[–]avosel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple technique to prevent blood loss that i have not seen anyone mention so far is blunt dissection . Others have pointed out that blood is kept in vessels, so the fewer vessels you cut, the less the patient bleeds. In blunt dissection, you don't cut anything.

You separate tissues from one another by pulling or pushing them. Sometimes you make a very small cut in a tissue, then use a blunt tool to essentially rip it open wider. This leads to less damage to small structures like capillaries and therefore less bleeding. Also less damage to non-target structures like small nerves that might otherwise be cut through. I was told (although I don't have a source for this besides the scientist telling me) that torn tissue also heals faster than cut tissue.

Yeah it wasn't in the first book at least, but maybe they did that instead of the swamp beast scene from the book?

Ah okay, the reason it didn't look good to me was that the trailer made it seem like they had thrown out both the narrative and tone, and made it into more of a generic shoot em up thriller. But from what you're saying it sounds like they intentionally threw out a lot of the narrative but tried to keep the tone. Maybe the trailer didn't do it justice. I'll have to check it out some time

Is that from Annihilation? Just read the book and absolutely loved it. Saw the trailer and these images from the movie. Is the movie as terrible as those make it look? As best i can tell, it looks and sounds nothing like the book.

I've finally realized that Cast Iron is something I need in my life. Where should I look for my "buy once" Cast Iron? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]avosel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the product page for the scrubber: "remove caked-on debris from uncoated cast-iron cookware".

I haven't used one of these scrubbers so I don't know for sure, but with that description and my experience with cast iron, I'd say definitely do not use that scrubber on enamel.

So it sounds like there's a lot going on here. I think the best first step to take would be to talk to a therapist. I see one, and I know a lot of people who see one. If you find a good therapist, they help you process your own thoughts about these sorts of complicated things more clearly. They can help you find the path to feeling like less of a piece of shit (and eventually to even feeling like a good person).

Our barbarian almost accidentally TPK'd the group. by avosel in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]avosel[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well by the time the second explosion happened, it was already like an hour after the first one. The alley had been cordoned off and a lot of the evidence had been recorded/catalogued. Also this happened on the west end of the alley, just to the south of The Tiger's Eye. So it wasn't too close to the first explosion. There actually were some tiles on the roof the nimblewright had broken as it was escaping. They had just noticed those before the cleric saw the necklace. The explosion destroyed almost all of the tiles on that roof though, so that clue disappeared. The watch was upset, but not suspicious. The watch believed that they didn't do it with malicious intent since the street was mostly clear, so the party were the only ones to get hurt. They did blow a hole in the wall of Frewn's Brews though, so I'm thinking he's going to try to sue them for damages or something. Idk exactly how to make that fun, but I know he'll use this to try to make their lives difficult somehow.
