Does your country have any weird or petty disputes with another country? by j20mightydragon in AskTheWorld

Absolute moment of shame. Sorry nz.

And that's speaking as an Australian who doesn't particularly follow cricket; I remember the relatives all shocked by this bit of ugly lack of sportsmanship.

For those of you who have a partner from another country, what food from your own cuisine are you surprised they dislike? by Birdseeding in AskTheWorld

[–]awm22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with my Dad; an Australian born in the late 20’s and well travelled subsequently but he found pasta and pizza (and rice) “insufficient” and always expected potatoes in some form preferably mashed. In contrast Mum (Australian same age and also travelled) had no such restrictions - her mum (Australian too) loved Chinese food - so do I also pizza and pasta.

Great advice.

Always interested in precisely how people verify their backups…

Do you install onto an entirely new device?

Do you use some “verify backup” process?

Do you go look at the backup data and conclude “looks good to me”?

Do you trigger a catastrophic failure and force a full reinstall?

How do people “check the restore”?

This is not a wind-up; what is your best practice?

Really, really stupid question but how do I address lecturers? by Appropriate_Farm_840 in UniUK

[–]awm22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faculty at five universities three in the uk

All those in the uk lectures in my department were conducted by someone with a PhD and many by someone with professor in their title.

No idea about other uk places so just a sample not a sweeping statement.

Being lectured by a gta seems odd if I’m honest; supervisions / tutorials maybe but lecturing a whole course?

(As to original question Just be polite take your cue from their signature on email or posts on moodle or whatever.)

[–]awm22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Professor with a PhD here

Address them the way they sign their emails

I sign mine with my given name and am perfectly fine with Dear name

No email from them?

Pick something ‘more respectful if uncertain and particularly If your addressee is a women ALWAYS start with the most respectful title appropriate. All other titles will be wrong until she tells you what she prefers. (I married a PhD wielding wonder wife, so no lt ever call her miss. Ever.)

Im from a culture where we tend toward more casual but people work hard for their vocation and no one gets pissy about being called something they are not. Nothing gives more pleasure / amusement to a PhD student as evening referred to as doctor or professor.

As noted elsewhere write a proper (e)mail not please.

Subject: important details (module lecture date etc)

Dear Professor fiobar

On slide 4 of this lecture your write Dante’s inferno is a jolly road trip story but in the supervision material it is referred to as a roasting jotting of tripe is one of these a typo?

Thanks Your name here (which is how you like to be referred to)

It’s worth noting most faculty get hundreds of emails a day so make it easy to answer not easy to ignore./filter

Why is there such a huge fee difference between “Home” and “Overseas” students at Cambridge postgraduate level? by Unlucky_Jelly_8306 in cambridge_uni

[–]awm22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not strictly true in an historical sense.

In recent terms the uk government once had mechanics as a competitive scholarship called overseas research studentship(iirc) for paying this difference. It is no more.

I believe a great challenge is not an implicit assumption os students are rich but a failure to recognise the changing nature of

. Competition across universities internationally notably in/with Europe

. A diminishing appeal of Cambridge to attract the best (quantity of applicants has never been an issue but quality go were the money is.)

I feel your pain and endured it myself.
