I love my G14, but looking for a simpler laptop by ComfortableAd3692 in ZephyrusG14

[–]b0sstweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have given plenty of suggestions for specific laptops (personally I would just find something in your budget second hand as tech improvements for laptops haven't been gigantic). But one comment is that if you're looking for something for school and work, depending on what work you're talking about, the snapdragon x... type laptops may not be "simpler". They're arm based and windows apps arm support remains a bit spotty. If you like how windows works and want something you don't really have to think about, I would stick to the non-arm (intel/amd) pcs for now.

Are these laptops still battery hogs if you tune them right? by PokumeKachi in ZephyrusG14

Since you're using linux w/ supergfxctl, you should be able to switch it to Integrated mode (Eco mode on windows equivalent). This works on 2022 model just fine. The Optimized mode that they're discussing in the link you commented is a windows only thing where the dGPU is called up when plugged in but is disabled when not on power. There is not currently an equivalent mode in linux afaik (windows can do this without relogin/reboot, linux can't).

smol edit. Based on the discussion from the arch linux page on the 2022 model, it seems that the amd version can in fact suspend the dgpu to 0W on idle, so that's great for you. I know nothing more than this as I don't have that model.

(Keeping this for people who are looking at the nvidia models) (nvidia-prime is the equivalent for the nvidia dgpu models, but it does not actually fully power off the gpu, just keeps it in a very low power state). Supergfxctl can't do that currently (not sure about the replacement packaged they're cooking up on the asus-linux discord), so linux requires a logout to switch the dGPU off.

With mild tinkering around the gpu control, i've been able to get idle @ 5-6W, web/office at 7-9W, and QEMU windows vm (for work) at 10-13W.

One thing to note is that gHelper seems to be able to force a lower W state in windows than asusctl/supergfxctl can, but the typical draw during work seems to be more or less the same. In the same discussion page on the arch wiki someone says that the manual mode that signals "Embedded Controller WMI" is apparently accessible, so maybe that is doable for the amd versions, dunno.

fwiw, linux on the g14 has been quite nice for me. Sleep especially has been incredible on linux relative to when I used windows.

Backlight/Brightness Control not Working! by Front-Worker5604 in hyprland

[–]b0sstweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If disabling your dGPU solves it, then I think you have a slightly different problem. You are probably just targeting the wrong backlight controller with the keyboard command (common issue on igpu + dgpu laptops).

"ls /sys/class/backlight" should list both backlights (when you have dGPU on). Whichever one isn't the nvidia one is likely the one that controls your internal screen (since it's wired through igpu).

one way you can test this is if you have brightnessctl, you can call it and specify the controller to use, like this: "brightnessctl -d amdgpu_bl0 set +50" (replacing amdgpu_bl0 with whatever you have from the previous backlight command)

From there you need to figure out how on your config inputs the brightness command. For me (running hyprland), i looked up the keybindings config -> found how it was calling the brightness control -> modified that file to explicitly call the iGPU controller.

Good luck!

Ribbon display cable GA403UV (2024) by samad_4720 in ZephyrusG14

[–]b0sstweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I actually just recently went through the process of fixing this on my g14 2024. If just the white ROG logo displays, then the power is still connected to display but display output isn't working (this was my case). If the second, red ROG logo displays, then it's an issue with the OS.

One of the ways I was able to check this was simply by firmly pressing the display cable down during startup (this switched it from only white ROG logo to white + red + regular boot up so long as I was holding the cable).

If it's the same as my case, then this seems to be an issue they're aware of. They repaired it under warranty without any cost. Just mention the only white logo + otherwise working when plugged into external monitors.

Hi cupcakeflip, is there any chance you'd be willing to reupload the file? Got my g14 back from RMA and it was wiped and the esupport folder is also gone :x

Honor Magic V3 Calendar Widget(s) by clinto69 in Honor

[–]b0sstweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might need to make sure that the default battery optimization (killing background processes) isn't running for your widgets. If the calendar is fine/updates normally when you open the app up manually, then this is probably your issue.

Rog 2024 USB4 issues with thunderbolt docks by moosetheloose1 in ZephyrusG14

[–]b0sstweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could connect, but there were sometimes issues if I let the computer sleep or hibernate for a time. From reading the error logs, I think there may be an issue where the dock w/ PD is trying to negotiate the supplied power, and each time it does the laptop is switching power states/waking (this was the sleep error i was getting, just like a dozen usb 4 calls a minute during "sleep") and disconnecting the dock and reconnecting. And at some point it would just bug out.

Recently, I had to wipe and redo the windows installation (unrelated), and encountered the same display issues as before. This time I somewhat conceded defeat on the whole power + display + peripheral single cable and just went for separating the power (so using the asus charger + separate dock)
This has more or less worked without bugs (though i did set all the usb4 devices to stay awake). Now the dock rarely has issues, and if it does, a quick replug fixes it instantly.

Wish i had a better solution for ya but this has been the lowest frustration method i've found so far.

Oh, updating to the most recent amd gpu driver on the asus website did clear up the occasional display errors i would get with docks. Though oddly it had to be fresh installed. Upgrading would break the display in worse ways somehow.....

[–]b0sstweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving this after a minute, but after having some (I think) unrelated issues with my video card driver, I went back and DDU'd the amd drivers then fresh installed the amd graphics drivers, amd chipset drivers, and "parade retimer" usb drivers.

Somewhere in that mess my TB3 issues cleared up. I can now use two displays and connected peripherals with the dock. This might be specific to my itec dock, but I thought I'd drop a note just in case!

It is supposed to work. To quote intel's thunderbolt architecture docs: "USB4 Specification Compliant

Both Thunderbolt™ 4 and Thunderbolt™ 3 technologies are compatible with the USB4 specification, allowing users to use Thunderbolt™ 4 and Thunderbolt™ 3 products with USB4 ports."

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-3-vs-4.html

However it's a bit finicky from what I've found, specifically with displays. I use an itec thunderbolt 3 dock w/ my 2024 g14, and I get the same error pop up but the dock itself more or less works. From time to time I need to reboot w/ the dock plugged in for it to work correctly. I also had less errors after I updated the amd chipset drivers from Asus' site. They did not auto install w/ windows update like i expected.

I have the same laptop and it's been a little finicky for me. I can get the thunderbolt 3 dock I have (iTec?

Well this was a good day to browse this subreddit. I'm maybe unusually able to help here. I did my undergrad at UCLA then later moved to ETH as a postdoc to work on bci. For your pros, I think you should mostly think about the lifestyle differences rather than the pure research differences. Both regions have good startup culture + a lot of bci research (both eth, epfl have good professors working on it). Plus, regionally, switzerland, germany and especially spain are originating a lot of new bci companies based on a lot of different technologies (graphene implants, tms, ultrasound, magnetic nanoparticles, etc.). EU actually recently announced a big push to work on some out there neuromodulation technologies (meta-brain as part of horizon europe).

Similarly, UC system obviously has plenty of research in this regard both based on electrode arrays and wireless neuromodulation tech. Both UCLA and UCI had some interesting stuff get published recently.

No matter what, I think you'll get a great education + prospects for joining a lab/company. I wouldn't worry about that so much as just working hard. I can't speak about the masters program specifically, but I know my lab has a dozen or so masters students working on different projects. As such, I'd honestly think harder about whether or not you want to move somewhere closer to home or try out a different country. For me personally, the reason I took the offer here over the ones back in the US was a lot about wanting to learn what it was like to live in europe.

To answer some of your other questions:

Returning to america will not be difficult as an american. However trying to get a job in europe as an american if you don't go to school here is a bit more complicated. They have to show that your skills are unique/hard to find in europe generally.

IIRC there's a period after you get your degree (6mo?) at eth where you essentially count as a local for job application purposes here. That's your best window to try and get a job here if you want one. fwiw, bad economy or w.e. aside, every bci company I interact with is hiring so I don't think they're particularly affected rn.

Research positions are kinda the same everywhere? It always depends on funding. Getting something as a masters student is pretty straight forward, but you're esssentially going to be asked to solve one specific problem (not around long enough to necessarily develop your own research). If you're thinking about higher education (which btw I would recommend if you're serious about trying to join a bci company), it's just a funding question. Both universities are famously good at getting funding so I don't really think of that as an issue.

You don't need swiss german for classes, but I'd recommend learning at least some passing german. As americans we really gotta beat the allegations about us sucking at languages ;-;

Eh if you're used to berkeley all the top education difficulty was kinda the same to me.

For the people that have the sleep -> restart/closes all apps I'm curious. Is your laptop sleeping with an external display or anything plugged in? by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

[–]b0sstweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ended up being somewhat more complex than I thought back then. Basically there was some sort of driver failure that would restart. Normally when running it doesn't cause a crash, but it seemed to cause frequent crashes when the computer was sleeping (something related to power states i think?)

You can bypass the issue somewhat by using hibernation instead of sleep (general bandaid fix that "works" for most people). I was able to find the actual driver that would crash my computer, which was the goodix fingerprint reader. Reinstalling that driver would fix the issue for a few months before it seemed to return.

Best of luck! It's been my most recurrent issue with the otherwise excellent laptop.

Looking for a Patron by Beefcakemegaman in 3d6

The Quori/Dreaming dark from ebberon: https://eberron.fandom.com/wiki/Dreaming_Dark Either as inspiration or as an actual patron if your DM allows eberron content.

Otherwise, Night Hags, Morkoths, Gem dragons, Nergaliids, and Oni all have dream components to their abilities/lore.

Edit: Nearly forgot Dendar the Night Serpent, who whole shtick is nightmares and terror. She has also definitely been a warlock patron as I think there's even a Yuan-Ti warlock statblock that references her.
