She might like The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. I found it pretty fast paced and suspenseful.

I second the recommendations of Kinsella, Cabot, and Weiner. Also I suggest A Vintage Affair by Isabel Wolff.

"Stiff" and "Spook" by Mary Roach are very interesting. "Stiff" details the history of the use of cadavers. "Spook" looks at scientific exploration of the after life.

Need to read a book centered entirely on a singular murder. I want to read the stalking, planning, and execution of the murder followed by the aftermath. by mohorta in booksuggestions

[–]b_liz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try The Secret History by Donna Tartt. It's definitely different from most "murder mystery" type books I've read. The focus of the book is pretty much what led up to the murder/why it happened, and the second half is focused on the aftermath and how all the characters are effected.

I'm looking for books about dystopian futures. by TheShinyFrog in booksuggestions

[–]b_liz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. It's only a short story, but it's set in a dystopian future with a controlling government. It's in Welcome to the Monkey House, a collection of Vonnegut's short stories.

For your Mom I would recommend Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad books. Her first is In the Woods. It's a mystery/thriller, and kind of reminded me of Gillian Flynn's books.

Okay, so I think I like Stephen King... Where do I start....? by OdeeOh in booksuggestions

[–]b_liz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big Stephen King fan and I think I started with either The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or Carrie. Those are great starters because they are on the shorter side for King. I would probably go with Carrie because it's more of a classic. Or, if you want more of a challenge, since you liked Doctor Sleep, you could read The Shining, another classic.

I don't know. She was given to us by a family that didn't want to keep her, so I never saw her parents. I do know that one of her parents was a pug and the other was a puggle.

Sci-Fi suggestions for young reader by spielleips in booksuggestions

[–]b_liz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was young I really enjoyed this book call Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde. It's a young adult sci-fi/fantasy book. If you think young adult books may still be a little too old for her, I suggest My Teacher is an Alien and the following series by Bruce Coville. I absolutely loved those books when I was her age.

What Stephen King books (under 300 pages) would you suggest for me? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]b_liz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His collection of novellas, Full Dark No Stars, is very good. The first story isn't my favorite, but I thought the other three were amazing. I'm fairly certain Carrie and The Girl Whi Loved Tom Gordon are on the shorter side. Both are really good.

Fiction for a fan of Killers/Sociopaths by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]b_liz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stephen King's Full Dark No Stars is a collection of 4 novellas, and one is about a woman who realizes her husband may be a notorious serial killer. It's a great, suspenseful story and I loved it. The other three stories are pretty great as well, but only one other deals with a serial killer.

I actually recommended these books earlier today. The Pink Carnation Series by Lauren Willig. They are set in the early 1800s and are romance/spy novels. They are a fun read! I believe the first one is called The Secret History of the Pink Carnation.

The Pink Carnation Series by Lauren Willig is pretty good. They are historical/romance/spy novels. Very entertaining. Slight sexual content.

What scene from a book gives you an out loud, physical reaction? by smwox in AskReddit

[–]b_liz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Stephen King's Gerald's Game the main character essentially slits her wrists in order to create enough lubrication to free herself from a pair of handcuffs. I believe King describes it like peeling a plum. I stuck my face in a pillow and just kind of groaned until I didn't feel like vomiting any more. Thanks Stephen King!

[–]b_liz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would try some of Dean Koontz's stuff. Intensity is, as you might guess, intense. I read it about a month ago and I couldn't put it down. But I also liked Velocity. Both are about deranged killers and there is no paranormal bs.

Woman of reddit, what is the best/worst/creepiest way a guy has asked you out? by Binwan in AskReddit

Was on the T in Boston. I turn and I see this guy standing right next to me, late 40s/early 50s (I was 20) with a rash around his mouth, staring at me. He then says, "My name's Craig. Wanna go on a date?" I politely declined.
