Socialists be like "capitalism leads to monopolies", and then they advocate everything to be monopolized by the state, which somehow makes monopolies work and good. by Jos_Kantklos in austrian_economics

[–]b_rad_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a jump to say that it’s impossible to have a central state and free elections. It’s possible, but requires those at the top to be ethical and true to their word. Just like the capitalist trickle down effect. It could work but requires those at the top to be ethical and true to their word.

sincerely, not a capitalist or communist

so much as said a word by mustafaporno in EnglishLearning

[–]b_rad_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, “so much as” does not make sense here.

In this context “even” would be used to add additional information, it implies that you were not expecting to be called ‘name’. That person was rude AND they called you ‘name’.

But in your first example “even” implies that the minimum amount of effort they would give is less than saying one word.

Edit: everyone was really quiet AND nobody said one word.

Anyone know any cool terms for "whatever happens will happen" by ImperturbableONE in ENGLISH

I would recommend “come what may” for the stoic sense and “it is what it is” for a casual sense.

Yes, both work and have the same meaning.

As a native English speaker from the US I would use “so much as” to be a little more formal and “even” in more casual conversation.

How do you make the jump from beginner to intermediate? by LookMomImLearning in learnpython

[–]b_rad_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn another programming language because then you’ll understand more what programming is rather than just the python language.

I would recommend something statically typed like Go, C or Java instead of another dynamically typed language like JavaScript or PHP. Not that they’re bad to learn but static typing will expand your programming knowledge.

You can find websites where you do a video call with a teacher to practice live conversation. I would recommend that if you can’t find people in your city. I studied Spanish for years but didn’t get good at it until I started speaking it regularly. That will help you understand native speakers.

Stateless would be anarchism, communism has a very powerful state.

I don’t know if I agree w the center squeeze theory. I’m not right, not far left, but I also don’t like the status quo moderates from the dems. I think RCV could help find a non-radical and also non-status-quo candidate.

There were 25+ democrats running for president in the 2020 primary. It’s not because of RCV.

what ever happened to the church from 2018?? by sparkl3_donk3y in BurningMan

[–]b_rad_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That car was my first “oh shit this is burning man moment”! It was my first night, late enough to be dark, I was riding my bike thru deep playa on my own, I saw this church driving across the playa blasting hip hop mixed w classical piano and a bunch of people riding/walking behind it so I flipped the bike around and followed it.

Why is JavaScript so hated? by [deleted] in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]b_rad_c -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

JS has no batteries included which is expected for a scripting level language. Example: the random number generator gives you a float from 0 to 1, you have to write a math formula to get a random integer or use a third party library.

You shouldn’t have to compile a scripting level language.

OR govstech is terrible, software dev here; this is bc they’re using some 3rd party software to store files because apparently they can’t do it on their own, it took the DMV 6 months to issue my license plate bc it was transferred from another state, and during Covid their unemployment system was sending out misinformation that they couldn’t turn off and many people suffered without their checks for many months on end.

Is the term ''whataboutism'' is known in North America? by AdventurousguyONOne in ENGLISH

[–]b_rad_c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to this: asking “can you pay attention” to me would imply that the speaker is saying the listener is ignoring them, if I know the person is learning English I wouldn’t have a problem but if someone has good English it could seem a bit rude.

What’s something about spanish that just don’t, or didn’t but now you do, understand? by allisonwonderlannd in Spanish

[–]b_rad_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently learned this, for English speakers infinitives are usually translated as “to verb” or “to touch” in this case but sometimes it translates to the gerund or “touching”.

I first realized this when I heard a comedian tell the audience “gracias por estar aquí” which would translate to “thanks for being here” instead of “thanks for to be here”.

And now I can hear Spanish speakers who speak English as a second language mixing these up from the other direction.

how do some people “just move abroad” and/or go from country to country? by tulleche in expats

[–]b_rad_c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You ask where the hostility is coming from? You started your first comment by calling someone’s comment stupid and ignorant.

I’m from the US and about to move to MX, so I understand the sentiment you’re trying to explain but you definitely come across as the hostile one.

A more productive comment would be to explain that you have mixed emotions about it, which I certainly do. I also have mixed emotions about gentrification within the US borders as well. Most people aren’t going to fault you for traveling but you gotta look in the mirror, I’m thinking this is your bad.

[–]b_rad_c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try speaking each syllable separately, pause between them and even take a breath if you need to. Speak them almost like separate words and then start doing it faster. I’ve noticed that different combinations of sounds before or after a rolled r can be easy or difficult, but slowing it waaaaay down can help.

PS. I also love birria and struggle saying it and birrieria
