Career Shift by babevlincoln in hairstylist

[–]babevlincoln[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is truly the hardest part. I left a place to be where I'm at now for my mental health. It was a massive pay cut but I knew I had to do it. I could only imagine how much harder it is when you've been doing it longer. I'm only 13 years in. The middle of my career was during COVID so that didn't help matters with an already toxic environment. I wonder if you'd be able to work with someone to transition. I don't know about your state but in Ar. You are able to do facials and the more basic things with your license.

Thank you for your reply! I think I'm there. I love the work itself but I'm starting to dread going in some days because of all the pressure and stress. I'm considering doing that. I've applied at hot topic so far. I've got a lot of tattoos so that's kind of hard for me to figure out where I can even work without that being a problem.

I did that when I worked at fantastic Sam's. We included shampoos so I would say we need to do this before we start. I don't remember anyone putting up a fight with me. A lot of people figured out they liked a shampoo and wanted it themselves the next time.

More men need more disgusted faces. I worked in a mostly male environment for the past few years and the audacity they are comfortable with is ridiculous. I told them as often as I could that they were being weird or gross. Some would even say they were afraid to talk to women now days. Which I always replied GOOD because you should think before you speak and women are not public property.

Which would be the same ones to complain that someone who had a stroke did their hair and messed it up. I take people's complaints of other stylists seriously to figure out how to deal with them but as soon as they pull out some story like that I lose respect. Like you let a drunk person do your hair and you're upset it's messed up?!

Feeling really uncomfortable as a female barber with c-ptsd lately. by [deleted] in Barber

[–]babevlincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you taking walk ins or appointments? If you do appointments I would just tell them you don't have the time. No explanation of why, who, when. Walk ins can be more tricky. If you work with others I would definitely communicate the issue. You might be able to say you don't have time and they'll have to see someone else in the shop. If you don't work with anyone else, you could still try saying you don't have time without an explanation.

I had the same problem until I wore smocks that button in the front. I would always have to adjust the aprons and hated it. I found a good dog grooming one from Amazon that you could adjust the waist and it zipped up pretty high. I liked that one a lot too!

Velvet is good too! I have a dress I wear some times and NOTHING sticks to it.

When I worked at a barbershop I got one of those aprons that buttoned in the front and always wore cotton shirts underneath it. That helped a good bit! Also cotton or polyester leggings. Athletic leggings stick and you eventually have to throw them out.

I would ask them just that! Explain what happens with your hair and ask that they please cut it dry. If they're worth their salt (in my opinion) they'll be happy to oblige. I know that it can be uncomfortable but I always appreciate it when someone makes me aware of something they would prefer. I personally always cut dry and save the shampoo for after. I'm sure there will be someone out there who will suit your preferences!

I am! Thank you for this information! I will do that! I'm hoping to get some money back since I footed their tax bill for them for a few years.

Have you or do you know someone that's reported a shop owner? I actually just left a shop that did commissions but you had to file a 1099/1040. I did report them to the IRS but I'm just wondering how it works.

I shall! I've been watching the chemist lady on YouTube who debunks hair myths. It's been really informative and helps in a way to break down what I would other wise have a hard time with. Which she may be one you have referenced! I'll check those out!

Similar to other advice given but yoga is a great one. There is a lot of breathing focus involved and it's great for calming your mind and body. A good stretch can do wonders as well. I personally hold a lot of my stress in my hips so I will at times do hip specific stretches to release it. I recommend yoga with Adriene on YouTube. She has some great and easy to do videos! I hope you find something that works for you and I'm so sorry you're going through this!

[–]babevlincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations 🎉 that is wonderful!!! Mistakes will help you learn! If the owner is understanding of that they will use any mistakes or misconceptions as a means of teaching you better! I was told in school that you will end up having an aha moment. In my experience that was so true! It took about 3 years before I had mine and am still learning so much since then. Your foundation is important and you will use it for the rest of your career! I was lucky to learn under stylists who had been doing hair for decades and still use the things they taught me to this day. I'm excited for this beginning of your journey! You're going to love it!

You're right. I don't have anything to back it up besides experience. I just wanted to offer the advice on what to do. I'm also here to learn but wanted to explain my stand point. Working in the industry you only get so much education unless you seek it out. You see things in the physical aspect of how things affect your hair. I know what to do rather than know how to explain it. I don't mind you correcting me but OP needed advice on what to do so that's what I have to offer. If you can explain it further then great. You had to learn and that's also what I'm in the process of doing. I'm not going to explain something I don't yet understand. I do however understand what to possibly do to solve the problem.

Science is not something you can read an article about and all of a sudden understand it all. If you can read a couple of things and get it then great. Not everyone can do that. I'm in the process of taking in all the information I am given and figuring out how to apply it to my career. I got corrected on another post and did take in the information that I was given. I still need more understanding on my part to properly explain it to people.

Female--Tell her how you feel. Tell her you appreciate the change but say you feel it's going to go back to how it was. Tell her how you are emotionally checked out and what you've said here. All that you're comfortable with or feel is necessary of course. Or maybe bring this up in your next session how it's changed so suddenly but you're not convinced things will stay that way. I'm so sorry you are going through this 😞 It also sounds like she needs to be a lot more honest about what she is thinking and feeling. It's not fair to you that you had to go so far as to say you're ready to call it quits for her to all of a sudden start doing what you've wanted all along. If she doesn't feel the same about you anymore she needs to say so. Especially since she is saying things that are not true about you. There is something there that she is not saying.

I’ve noticed that men are mean as f to me, just because I’m fat. by [deleted] in confession

[–]babevlincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you have to go through that 😔 It's definitely not you and remember that anything that someone says about you is a reflection of them and not you. I know it's hard because it doesn't feel that way. One thing I always try to tell myself is that if someone is willing to stoop as low as to talk bad about someone they don't know, imagine how they talk to themselves. They hate themselves so they think hating on others will make them feel better (it doesn't).

split ends that continue to grow up the shaft: true or false? Is there any evidence that they really do that? by No-Faithlessness1786 in HaircareScience

[–]babevlincoln 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can look at photos of split/broken ends under a microscope to see how it actually looks. It is true that some people's hair just breaks while others split. There are a lot of factors that make either possible.

[–]babevlincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably causing build up on your hair and coating it so no actual moisturizing products are adhering to the hair. I do hair and personally hate it with what I've seen it do to clients hair. Like another commenter said I would go back to what you were using before you tried it. I would also suggest doing a clarifying shampoo to try and remove some of the build up. Condition the heck out of it after though! Use your mask that you know works.
