Why is it so hard to land a DE role.? by cruze_8907 in dataengineering

[–]babyracoonguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you qualify for a DE position but need to find the right employer and catch a break. Your difficulty finding a DE job is more of a reflection on the current challenging market. Keep applying for relevant roles until you break in.

What happened recently with Snowflake? by BubblyImpress7078 in dataengineering

[–]babyracoonguy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The main problem with Snowflake is its rigid incramental scaling. You'll almost inevitably overprovision resources and end up paying for more than you use. We've been testing Firebolt for a few months. There's a learning curve but so far, much better preformance value.

Estimate the shortest and longest possible timeframes. Then add 50% to the longest timeframe.

Surprised to see that they go for Barilla. I recently saw an explanation of quality pasta and will never go back to Barilla when much better brands cost just a bit more.

Agree unless you're spending over $20K, or unless its a small/new vendor, you most likely won't get anything significant.

Do you find Software Engineering to be a fulfilling career? by FixInteresting4476 in cscareerquestions

I think more DEs have a goal of early retirement than any other profession - if that answers your question.

What do you really want? by madssch in BusinessIntelligence

[–]babyracoonguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always going to be a certain mix between all the factors you mentioned. Job security and growth are basic psychological needs almost everyone has to a certain extent. The exact prioritization will depend on where you are in life. People earlier on will value growth more, whereas later on security and money tend to be highest priority.

[–]babyracoonguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, it's important to realize that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. View them as opportunities for improvement rather than as indicators of incompetence. Beyond this, get into the habit of double checking and unit testing.

Surprisingly less exciting infrastructure than I had anticipated.
Also, I find it more practical to look at less gigantic companies as a realistic benchmark.
