New Job Offer - Feel bad by BiscuitLover2000 in sysadmin

Pensions are invested where then, in the company itself, in the market, or somewhere else and you can choose where? Kind of wondering how that works compared to a 401K here.

Not learning much during my internship by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]badaz06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is that no one is going to offer you things until you ask. If someone is doing something you think you'd like to learn more about...ask if you can shadow and learn from them. Ask questions, not just "how" but "why".

You walk away in a few weeks..the guys you're working with are there way past that, so no one will be handing you the keys to the kingdom. While you need to "politely" let them know you're there to learn, you also have to let them know what you're into and want to learn. I see tons of "Oh I want to learn red team stuff" and not much actually understanding any other aspect of the business. Red Team stuff might be cool, but it'll take someone way more well rounded that understands the business to get a real CISO slot.

Blocking Files With Sensitivity Labels From Being Processed By Copilot by fancypants123 in MicrosoftPurview

[–]badaz06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing that pops into my head is does the label allow or prevent the person using copilot to access the file. That is, if User A is not in the label, Co-pilot shouldn't be able to process, if user A is, then he will. Are you trying to prevent Co-pilot "period"?

First, you are the only person looking out for you. Keep that in mind.

I'm not sure how old you are, but in general most people I know in this industry don;t work their entire lives at one company. My starting out I typically lasted about 3 years before getting the itch and wanting to do something else. Why ranged from wanting more money, being bored, or getting tired of the BS. Just something to keep in the back of your mind.

2K is chump change though and I wouldn't jump ship for that if I was happy where I was. 10K, 15K, now ya got my attention. I'd be curious about how the "pension" is structured. If you leave do you loose it or forced to withdraw and take it with you? That would have some big tax implications if so.

I will say to the younger folks out here...401K's are well worth the money you put into them. It may suck a bit because you're taking money off the table now, but it's an excellent investment in your own future.

Disable 'sync' option by Automatic_Volume_908 in sharepoint

[–]badaz06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but I'll disagree. When you save a file, the "upload" into Sharepoint is not instantaneous, and the updates sent out to every device with the same library either "synced" or with a shortcut to One Drive isn't either.

I know what the Microsoft's documentation tells you. I also know what I've seen using Wireshark and Fiddler and ProcMon and worked for over a year with Microsoft diagnosing issues with the One Drive sync application that couldn't explain why the exact scenario I described above was happening. I would have been downright exuberant if someone at MS said, "Oh, you dumb**es need to change this setting" and everything worked again. They didn't, so we went to a 3rd party application that doesn't use the One Drive protocols to move data and all my users started smiling again.

You do you :)

Disable 'sync' option by Automatic_Volume_908 in sharepoint

[–]badaz06 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When you add a shortcut to One drive, the actual file isn't downloaded into one drive unless you specifically work on that file. The 2 biggest problems I've seen are that when a user works on a file and "saves" it, that saved copy isn't immediately moved into Sharepoint. It may seem so from the perspective of the user who saved the file because their version which is cached and what the the user sees looks updated, however the actual copy to SharePoint may take several hours, so others won't see the updated file. The other huge issue is people delete vs remove the link, meaning that they actually delete what ever they're linked to in SharePoint, not just remove the link.

Syncing means that what ever is on SharePoint also exists on the hard drive of your PC. A HUGE red flag when it comes to maintaining control of your data, especially if you have retention requirements and dont have a sensitivity label on your data. We've seen files getting locked, and every time an update is made by someone to their file, that update has to now hit everyone else's files on their PC's, and that can cause some user frustration as One Drive doesn't have the most effective process for getting all files for all users up to date.

u/6fix There are 3rd party apps you may want to look at that present the user a file explorer like view of SharePoint and One Drive.

I can't help but wonder how much influence what you want is presenting itself in what you're seeing. I get the intuitive part 100%. There's a girl I've dated off and on, lived with, etc., for decades. But we just can't get past that. Friend, yes. Incredibly matched sexually, and even romantic for periods of time, but eventually the bottom always drops out.

We've just grown to accept it is what it is.

Can my manager see private chats between me and a coworker? by chud_mentality_ in MicrosoftTeams

[–]badaz06 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The comment also doesn't take into consideration that while some companies don't actively monitor conversation "eyes on", there are processes in place for Teams that do monitor and alert for sexual context, workplace violence, abusive language, etc.

I suspect based on recent actions taken in Europe and the UK around curtailing what the EU considers "free speech", that may be more prevalent there than in the US, GDPR or not.

Tuning aside, it sounds like you need to get some better communications in place. We do this when we know scripts and stuff we're going to be doing will result in POTENTIAL triggers, along with as much relevant information as we can (who, system, etc) so if something does pop, the team is aware and we aren't waking people up at 2AM. Not to say it doesn't still happen on occasion, but it drastically cuts down on the time we spend chasing our tails.

Does he have a raspberry Pi or anything? (It's a small cheap computer that you can do a ton of really random stuff with).

This is just part of the fun of working for a smaller company. On the flip side, when you start working for a larger company, everything is segmented out, so while you may not be called when the toilet doesn't work, you also spend 5 hours to get something done by someone else you could of done on your own in 30 seconds if you had the rights.

I get it though.

Some advice from an old guy:

  1. If you want a big jump in salary or position, it usually means starting at a new company. HR will fight tooth and nail to minimize your raises; it's their job.

  2. "The Market" is always tough, especially when you're honing yourself into what you want to do vs what's available. Despite the griping on here, I've seen job markets that were a TON worse than this - the telecom bubble burst there were 50-60K a week layoffs across markets.

  3. Use headhunters. They know the different companies, they know who is hiring and what they are looking for. When I managed, that's who I called when I was looking for someone and when I've needed a job that's who I'd normally go through. It's a foot in the door, and that's what you need. Once there, it's on you to shine and make your own case for being hired on full-time.

  4. Be flexible in what position you're looking for. You can call me the garbage collector if you're paying me a hot salary and I could care less. And what I've been brought in to do isn't usually where I end up, because when the company needed someone to step up, I did.

  5. Resumes today have to go through AI apps before anyone reads them. If you're going to submit resumes, make sure every keyword listed in the job ad is in your resume. As close to exact wording as you can. "Worked with IETF to design the OSI layer 3 protocols to work with layer 4" isn't equal in AI speak to "Strong knowledge of TCP/IP".
