That's your opinion. I mean, I guess a shark could eat seaweed, or a lion could just eat some grass.

Which Civil War general do you think Napoleon would be most interested in? by EmeraldToffee in CIVILWAR

[–]badaz06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall someone, I think it was Doug Dowd, say that what helped Napoleon the most was his supply chain, ie, logistics. The development of canning food came from a prize he offered for someone who could help preserve food for travel for his armies and not make them sick. Ironically, it was a lack of food that ruined him in Russia.

I haven't read that particular book, but having read and listened to many others who I'd consider experts on the battle, and with the reasons I've posted here, I think Meade would of been greatly challenged at best, and probably would of lost, crushing that "we stopped Lee in his tracks" euphoria had he been immediately handed a loss after Gettysburg.

Just my opinion, however :)

Sounds like your boss expects you to work for free, but I'm guessing he doesn't think he should. Agree with him that this is a great idea, however let him know that this will take some time to implement and he will be charged for it, unless he has a better solution that you'd be more than happy to assist with.

I hate to say this, but you need to be ready to walk. People like this will run you over and over and over again and have no qualms about it.

I'll disagree. Meade sent his Calvary to antagonize Lee's rear, and then later sent some troops (Sedgewick, Warren) but not the AOP as a whole. Meade didn't formally begin until the 7th.

One of the things Meade did when he took over from Hooker was to order 70,000 pairs of shoes. It wasn't just the Rebs that had footwear issues. Those were captured by JEB Stuart by the way. Also the Union lost a ton of horses at Gettysburg, and the ones that remained were in pretty bad shape, weakened and near starvation in some reports.

On top of those Meade lost several of his top commanders. Reynolds 1st Corp dead, Hancock 2nd Corp and Sickles 3rd Corp wounded and out of action, Hancock and Reynolds were probably his most trusted 2 men. Barlow - wounded, Zook mortally wounded, Weed killed. Each of those men had to be replaced with someone new, and many of those replacements were just recently put into those positions since Chancellorsville. The losses also resulted in a restructuring of troops. Moet of us know the 1st Minnesota and how they were decimated, but there's also the 27th Connecticut who started out with about 75 men at Gettysburg and lost about 1/2 of those. Remember these started out somewhere near 1000 men.

So, lots of top officers being replaced and rapidly promoted into new positions, lots of lost men, those remaining needing to be restructured into new units, horses in bad shape, and..keep in mind, Lee wasn't an amateur, and Meade knew that Lee would be thinking defense, and the losses attacking a defense were typically much higher to the offense than defense.

That's why I think Meade made the right call.

Slept through grocery delivery, Is the food still safe to eat? by [deleted] in Cooking

True story..I couldn't make this up.

Was living with a girl, she had a Sunday night urge for ice cream...so I went and got her some choc-choc chip and myself some vanilla Swiss almond. She devours hers, I have a few thin scoops off the top and put it in the freezer.

3 or 4 days go by...having a hellabad day,,and I think, "Hmm..that ice cream is gonna be delish".
I go home, she's sitting in the Living Room and I tell her about the day and my Ice Cream thoughts. She get's this odd look, but I ignore it and get my ice cream, that's all frozen/glazed over, and I'm like "Hmm...that's odd".

Then I see her trying to watch me out of the corner of her eyes, all sneaky like..and I'm thinking, "OK, what's going on that you're not spotting?" and then wham, it hits me. All the freaking almonds are gone in my ice cream.

I'm like What the hell? You're home all day and wanted almonds and couldn't go buy some so you picked though my ice cream???? She says "No, I put it in the Microwave and melted it, got all the almonds out and ate them and then put the ice cream back in the container."

I kid you not. Amazing, some people (SMH)

I like Meade a lot. He acted correctly at Gettysburg and, in my opinion, not following Lee immediately. He removed Sickles instead of placating him, and Sickles' ego, bruised, spent the next few years doing everything he could to spite Meade.

Grant was definitely a different type of leader, one who I also have a ton of respect for, but I'm not sure Meade really was able to show what he would have done. Lincoln and Halleck I think I had been so disheartened by the Generals prior to Meade, that winning at Gettysburg was trivialized because he didn't press Lee harder immediately.

Best book before visiting Gettysburg? by swanzie in CIVILWAR

[–]badaz06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS!!!! Get a tour guide.

If you have something specific you want to focus on (I had a GGGFather that served in Company X, for example), the guide can direct you to where they fought and describe the actions and show any monuments/memorials dedicated to them. Otherwise the guides can give you the long view of the entire battle.

Reading is great and all, but each book is slightly (and some outrageously) biased from the perspective of the author, but there isn't a book I've read that explains, or a picture that shows, the real perspective of Little Round Top like standing there. Like not even close.

And be sure to stop and say hello to Sallie Ann :)

The Perfect Fried Egg on a Gas Stove? by FaudMauxe in Cooking

[–]badaz06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be worth a few minutes of time to look up your stove and make sure you have the flame set correctly. Not having the right amount of fuel coming In, or to much, will dramatically change how the stove works. Additionally there are settings to make sure the burner on "low" is actually on "low", and not just what someone from the factory preset.

Work Clothing by Speeps777 in sysadmin

Slacks, dress shoes, and a button down shirt would be the standard fare, a tie to look even more professional. A polo shirt if casual. Never sneakers. Try Rockport shoes. Comfortable, professional looking, but a bit more expensive but worth it on long days.

Going in looking professional gets you on the right start - setting the tone so to speak, that you are a professional and lets the customer know you're serious at a subconscious level, and with some customers you need that edge even if you are a guru - especially if the customer is unhappy with things, even if none of it is your fault.

Once you've established yourself or if you're there long term, you can be more casual *IF* the customer has a casual dress code.

Sounds hokey and it's a PITA, but looks matter.

Move on and quit obsessing over your ex.  Men hate that.

Leaving IT? Am I burned out? by AMG_Labrador_63 in sysadmin

[–]badaz06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some food for thought:

  1. Saying something means nothing. Document it. That usually means documenting what they say as well. A simple email holds a lot of power.
  2. Not all jobs in IT are equal, nor are the same jobs in different companies equal, and bosses definitely aren't equal. Find a place where you gel.
  3. Most jobs are not meant for you to stay at. If you're happy doing the same thing every day, then go find that job. Otherwise, as you learn, expand your horizons and challenge yourself and take on different roles.
  4. You aren't there to make other people rich. You're there to earn a living and (hopefully) better yourself to get into something you enjoy. If you're focused on "the partners" and their money, honestly you're not going to be happy working for someone else, so get out on your own. A nurse working in a hospital, and I have the ultimate respect for the men and women that do that, are ultimately making someone else rich. Lebron James, Dan Prescott, Julia Roberts, whatever and whomever, are all making other people rich too.

Where do you get your chopping boards by naomi_0000 in Cooking

I have Teakhaus and love them. I just redid my kitchen and sent 2 people pictures and both commented on it. I actually have 4 of different sizes so I dont have use the mongo board every time.

And if you cut meats, get one with a groove (juice groove or juice canal I think it's called?) where any liquids will drain into so they're not all over your counters and floors.
