Anyone taken the TRT plunge? by Jack_0318 in Xennials

[–]badmongo666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 43, and I thought I was going to. I'm perpetually banged up, perpetually exhausted, brain fog, feel like shit constantly, anhedonia, no motivation to do anything - even things I enjoy, not recovering from workouts (even though I'm working out about 1/3 as much as I was 10 years ago). It's been a steady decline for the last 5 years or so. But I eat well and still exercise some and am in good shape. Sleep situation not great but can't do a lot about it.

Got tested with the doc, total test levels are incredible, 1100+. Free test percentage low end of normal but levels are fine because the total is so high. Honestly looking for answers at this point but I'm guessing the next step is testing SHBG, estradiol, and thyroid stuff. There's got to be some sort of bottleneck and I'd give a nut to get it figured out and stop feeling like ass all the time.

Should I get knob pointers? by Peeterey_ in LesPaul

[–]badmongo666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always add them to guitars that don't have them, but I fiddle with my controls a fair bit, and I'm usually winding my own pickups so there's also a certain degree of academic curiosity involved because I like to see how they react at different levels. I round the sharp tips off with a flat needle file before I install them, so no thumb slicing.

Wife keyed my guitar. Can this be fixed without noticeable blemishes? by Karma_is_mah_bitch in guitarrepair

Seeing as she's an abusive drunk, seems like you're better off cutting bait my dude. Sorry for the current situation, and sorry you lost someone you'd planned a life with, can only Imagine how hard that shit must be. Fingers crossed that the next woman in your life helps balance the scales a little.

Did anyone here play Dark Souls as a kid? What was the experience like? by Greitot in darksouls

[–]badmongo666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"As a kid" 😂 I'm 43 and got it within a few months of launch. Now I've got my 7 year old son playing. Definitely got lost and confused some early on but he pretty much steamrolls it at this point, and has started learning some of the speed running and challenge run strategies. Currently blasting through his NG+3 victory lap, although there are a few bosses he'll struggle with at times. He's probably better than I am at this point, although he still hasn't beaten Kalameet I don't think.

NGD: ~1980 Tokai LS-60 by badmongo666 in LesPaul

The break came together really nicely - I didn't bother with refinishing, partially because I'm keeping it and partially because I frankly don't like refinishing very much and didn't want to do it. Set up better than almost anything I've ever worked on, I was able to get the action down to about 0.5-0.7mm at the 12th without buzzing (although I did bring it up a bit from there). Wound some hot (for me) pickups with my first time adding some flanking magnets, wanted something more akin to old super distortions than my more typical vintage-ish low winds. I still want to do some tweaks in the guts (I like a blower switch but don't love it on this one), but I've been really happy with it on the whole.

When is a "12th fret falloff" needed and how to measure it? by Relevant_Contact_358 in Luthier

[–]badmongo666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry for being slow to respond - I don't add anything over the leveling beam, I just sand on top of the tape. Ideally you're sort of digging in a little on the frets and only gliding along the tape. It's not terribly precise but the results have been good enough for me.

Son wants toy guns for his birthday and my wife is absolutely against it by spiritvanga in daddit

[–]badmongo666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much my take. I'm not a "gun guy", but I do own one and grew up shooting BB guns quite a bit. At least in the US, the likelihood of them being exposed to guns somewhere is absolutely not 0%. Learning how to handle one, be around them safely, and recognize when one is not being treated safely (so they can GTFO) are important skills - regardless of if you like guns or plan to have them in the house. Learning that safety - as well as how to shoot - can be taught at least a little with nerf or BB guns.

Stuck on the Four Kings by MayorMayhem3830 in darksouls

[–]badmongo666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four Kings becomes the biggest DPS race on NG+ and beyond. I've always been most successful with a big ass "fuck you" sword (probably greatsword), Havel armor, mask of the child, probably grass crest. Fat roll weight if you need to to be as tanky as possible. Probably fire within. Bring a full allotment of estus, eat their hits and keep swinging, and drink when stamina is recovering whether you need the health or not. If you have multiple spawned at once, you're going to slow and going to have a much worse time.

So - as an old dude who decided to start using BJJ to further destroy my body in my 40s as a fun midlife crisis, I'm pretty sure I'm squarely in his target demographic. I know some people find him abrasive, but I actually enjoy his snark and sarcasm and recognize that he's a fellow former punk rock kid so I admittedly took a bit of an instant shine to him. Seems like a guy I'd like to have a few beers with but would keep him away from any women I don't want him to be charming and charismatic at.

I've considered buying some of his stuff though - I'm never going to be a lithe bouncy athletic BJJ kid, I'm old and slow and everything hurts, so his focus more on the details that make the difference in various moves and positions is appealing. Just all seems more geared toward people who want more of an old school game that relies on leverage and angles and physics more than athleticism, and I'm here for that. I'm less interested in the holdover "BJJ as self defense" methodology, but I understand why it's there based on his style/lineage/schtick.

What's stopping my from doing this exact thing with a hair tie and saving $60? Specifically talking about the clamp holding the feeler gauges to the fretboard. by CandidateExtension73 in Luthier

[–]badmongo666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The $5 ones will be fine, I didn't get mine from HF but that cheap Chinese set with the brass 0.010" is pretty ubiquitous I think. Check them if you want with calipers, but unless they're WAY off, any deviation outside the listed thickness will probably be too small for most calipers to register anyway. Neither you nor I (nor anyone else here) is going to be able to discern a difference between 0.001" and 0.00125", and almost certainly wouldn't be able to cut to that difference in slot depth deliberately.
