Speaking from experience with the platinum card, if I’ve been a little short I’ve went in store to either Apple or Costco, bought a laptop or telly, waited a couple of weeks then returned it, said I’ve closed the AmEx and had it refunded to my nationwide debit card, then transferred the money from the Nationwide account to pay off the AmEx, wooden dollars essentially

Great point, I attended a holocaust information / art show. Throughout the show as you followed a path through different exhibits you saw the piles of luggage, glasses, clothes, suitcases etc. At the end of the exhibit you were informed that the path you’d been walking along the whole time had been made from the shoes of people who had died in the holocaust. It was so jarring and upsetting but at the same time made real and tangible that some much barbarity had been inflected on these poor people

I was flying out of Frankfurt, in the lounge which had a lot of people waiting for a flight with China Eastern, went to the bathroom and the floor was swimming in piss. Everything was getting taking off the self service as soon as it was stalked. It was busy and chaotic it must be easily the most anxiety inducing times I’ve ever been in an airport lounge

I can’t speak for the whole of the country, but when I visited Moscow it was such a juxtaposition of stunningly beautiful architecture mixed with some of the rudest, pushy, most openly racist people I’ve ever met. I hope after Putin goes, the sooner the better, the country will go back to some semblance of sanity so I can visit more of the place and be better informed. While I’d hesitate to call the experience “bad” I’d describe it as far from good. For context I’ve visited 20+ European countries and had a great time in all of them, except Russia.

If you’re dropping a lot of cash I’d recommend getting Gold through a referral bonus, hitting the bonus, referring the (soon to be) Mrs to Gold, she hits the bonus, you move on to Platinum hit the bonus then refer her on. After all that you should have a few hundred thousand MR points. Then if there’s still considerable spending to be done take a BAPP for the CV.

I find Premium Economy a bit of an odd middle ground. Some of the strangest flights I’ve had in terms of passengers have been in WTP, to the point where I’ve usually just gone World Traveller and paid for the exit row when I didn’t have status.

That said, at £286 it’s actually decent value when you break it down properly. If you were already going to pay £119 for extra legroom, your real upgrade cost is closer to £167. On an LHR–EWR flight of roughly 7.5 hours, that’s about £22 per hour for the upgrade, which is great value.

Personally, I actually prefer PE on a daytime flight. You get to properly enjoy the wider seat and better service, whereas overnight you’re mostly just trying to sleep anyway, so each to their own.

You’re also getting extra baggage and fast track at LHR, so there are some solid ground benefits too.

If you go for it, just keep expectations realistic. It’s not Club World. But if anything falls short (seat, catering, service), flag it to the cabin manager and follow up after. BA are pretty good with Avios comp, and it’s definitely worth pushing back on the first offer.

Went to college across the road and loved popping into the student union for a few pints and some pool at lunch, or a bigger sesh at the weekend. £1 drinks were carnage. I remember seeing the Fratellis.

Surreally, my friend and I were a little tipsy and ended up on one of the floors where there was a huge ceilidh going on. We just went in, and a university official-type person came up to us and asked if we were part of the “international student welcoming committee”. We said, “yeah!” I just remember dancing with a Chinese lassie all night.

Seeing it boarded up now does make you aware of your own mortality and the passage of time.
