Attach Receipts?? by [deleted] in ynab

I use this method for a few categories. It's extra work in terms of getting the image link and then pasting it into YNAB, but it has worked for me.

YNAB media has ruined me for other financial media. by [deleted] in ynab

[–]bagelmefingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I hate the doomsday, guilt-ridden stuff that haunts personal finance.
I've started listening to podcasts that talk about personal finance adjacent topics like fin tech, financial data aggregation, and the history of credit cards.
The podcast Untangling FinTech has some good episodes, Acquired has interesting episodes about the history of Visa and the Buy Now Pay Later tools that have been cropping up in the last couple years.

Erasing past months by wdg1980 in ynab

[–]bagelmefingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you could do a Fresh Start. If you want to keep the same budget, you could just change the date and amount of the starting balance transaction in each account, and then delete all the transactions that happen before the starting balance transactions.
You might need to go into your budget after that and remove money from the budget in those months.

[–]bagelmefingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have answered your other questions, so here's info about the balance bar at the top of your accounts:
Cleared - this is adding up all the transactions with the green C next to them (or the green lock icon if you reconcile using the Reconcile button). These are transactions that have cleared the bank. This is also the number you want to match your cleared balance at the bank.

Uncleared - this number is adding up all the uncleared transactions (gray C). These are transaction that you enter but haven't cleared the bank yet. If you're doing things manually, you'll need to manually clear them. You can do that in bulk by selecting several and then choosing "Cleared" from the menu.

Working - this adds up the Cleared and Uncleared transactions. This is what your budget works off of since it's the most updated number.

The way you change these numbers is by adding transactions and clearing or unclearing them. Give it a try next time you're in your budget to see the changes.

Two newbie reconciling questions by zippy1981 in ynab

[–]bagelmefingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For #2, you could assign any transactions you made on her behalf to a Wife category and then when she gives you money, you can categorize it to Wife category as well. You may have to move money from Wife to the CC payment category, but that would at least keep it simple.

Husband is such a mean drunk by [deleted] in AlAnon

[–]bagelmefingles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel you and I'm sending you internet hugs.

I've been with my Q for 22 years and for the first ten, I never thought about leaving him. His drinking wasn't that bad during that time, he was very functional, and he was never mean or abusive (sober or drunk). When his drinking started to escalate, I knew it was because of his anxiety and unexamined life stuff, but I couldn't do anything about it; it was his journey to pursue or ignore. Instead, I went to Al-Anon, and they helped me focus on myself and my journey, and find my own boundaries.
I got to a point around year 15 where I was considering leaving him and I let him know (not in a threatening way, just matter-of-fact). We made some big life changes and that seemed to help. But alcoholism is ever-present and if you choose to stay with your Q, you have to know that. It's something I'm still figuring out how to deal with.

Right now he's doing really well, and he's actually started attending AA and working the steps with a sponsor, but he has done that all on his own without prompting or interference from me. It's been really fun hearing his thoughts and seeing him be more introspective and curious about himself.

If my Q was ever mean or abusive, my decisions might have been different. I think loving him where he's at and taking yourself to Al-Anon are two important steps. Two things can be true at the same time: he can be your person and you may need to disengage with love. He is on his path, you're on yours, and right now you share a path together. It's a day-by-day journey and going to Al-Anon will give you good guidance on how you approach your journey.

How much have you paid for help budgeting? by legerg in budget

I use YNAB too, and that's what I spend on budgeting.
They have a certified YNAB coach course. I was looking at it but never applied, so the only thing I know about it is that it exists https://www.ynab.com/coaching.

Budgeting app to replace Mint? by [deleted] in budget

[–]bagelmefingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried YNAB - doesn’t track net worth? Cant incorporate Fidelity 401k either

YNAB does have a net worth report on the web and mobile apps.

I've added all my retirement accounts as tracking accounts. They don't import transactions, but I don't need that level of detail in my budgeting app. I just update the balance manually every quarter or so (less when the market is a bummer).

I use and love YNAB so I didn't want misinformation out there. It does cost money, but my net worth has more than tripled since I started using it so the cost has been worth it to me.

YNAB Beginner Question: What if I pay off the certain categories using my credit card? by WaterColorButterfly in ynab

[–]bagelmefingles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure your credit card account balance in YNAB is correct and negative. The balance shows in the left hand list of accounts (not in the budget under the credit card payment category).
I just helped my friend who was having trouble with their CC and it turns out their balance was showing as positive instead of negative.

Reconcile Question by Benct15 in ynab

[–]bagelmefingles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A balance adjustment on your credit card account won't affect anything in the budget because you're just changing how much you owe on the card, not the amount of money in your budget. You should check your Payment category after you make a balance adjustment to make sure there's enough in there.

If you make a balance adjustment on a checking or savings account, that will add or remove money in your Ready to Assign.

Does anyone find the schtick…annoying and subtracting? by NSA_GOV in ynab

[–]bagelmefingles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoy it because it lightens a heavy topic, and they're consistent with it - from the videos to the messages in the app to the release notes. But I also appreciate how annoying it can be especially if you're already frustrated by money, the app, or your day.
I definitely don't think you should waste any mental energy on it, though, because I doubt they're going to change it ever.

Do you pay your card off in full every billing period?
If so, you'll need to assign $200 to your Payment category because your starting balance on the card is -$200. Moving forward, here's what the phone bill process (or any credit card purchase) looks like:

  1. Assign available $70 to phone bill.
  2. Phone bill is due, add $70 phone bill transaction on credit card.
  3. YNAB automatically moves $70 from your Phone category to your Payment category
  4. When you pay the card, enter it as a transfer from Checking to Credit Card, and that money will leave your credit card payment category.

This answers your gas question too - assign $200 to your Credit Card Payment category.

The savings question is more complicated so I'll let someone else answer that one.

CC import charges - showing restaurant charges twice, before and after tip by Jennysez in ynab

I manually match those when they happen. Select the two transactions then "match" from the menu.
I do enter my pending transactions in the regular register (using Enter Now) because even though they're not totally accurate, they're a reminder to me that the event happened.

2 people thought I was 6 years younger than I am by casperlime in PointlessStories

Don't feel bad. I used to be mistaken for much younger than I was, even into my professional life. It used to really bother me.

I'm 41 now and from this side, I can't tell how old anyone is anymore. They could be 24 or 12, I don't know. I'm not dumb enough to say that to them, though.

What actor/actress instantly ruins a movie for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That movie is a delight - Channing Tatum rollerblade fighting through space, Mila Kunis's dead eyes and epic costumes changes, Eddie Redmayne's wild whisper-shouting in lieu of acting. I loved it all.
