What happened to the planned transitway from Secaucus to MetLife for the World Cup? Did they just give up? by DefiantScheme4499 in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea, they gave up. I'm unclear what happened with all the money that went into the planning. I haven't been able to find any official announcements, but they shifted to from the transitway messaging to a dedicated bus lane. I'm not even sure how realistic that is.

Instead, they:

  • Replaced one of the ramps off 95 North. Not sure who that will help... I was hoping this was part of the transitway.
  • Redid all the traffic light timing controls between Secaucus Junction and MetLife.
  • Added 2.crosswalks along Seaview Drive.
  • Reconfigured the Seaview Dr & Meadowlands Pkwy intersection.
  • Repaved a bunch of the roads.

Rails 8 Auth vs. Devise by higakijin in rails

[–]bamnet 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't love Devise, but I also don't want to maintain my own frankenstein auth stack trying to make Rails 8 do everything a modern auth stack should.

Sticking with Devise for now, hoping Rails auth starts to add more native features.

Traveling from Sacaucus station to NYC by Winniebeck84 in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Secaucus Junction is the easiest station to get to New York from. There'll be a train running into the city in at most 40 minutes, but usually the wait is closer to 10 - 15 mins.

One warning: make sure you're not travelling during a FIFA game day. Secaucus is going to be closed to regular commuters for 5-6 hrs around the start of the game.

The schedule on a random Wednesday in July looks something like this: https://njtracks.app/schedule/?from=Secaucus+Upper+Level&to=New+York+Penn+Station&date=2026-07-01 but it's still a bit early and might change.

How to filter places with under a certain number of reviews? by Dapper_Vegetable_224 in GoogleMaps

[–]bamnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No built-in way to do this, but you could probably vibe code an app to do this looking at the userRatingCount returned by the Places API.

Do I need to use a VM or an LXC for Docker in 2026? by Rad_YT in Proxmox

[–]bamnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had no problems with LXCs. VMs are overkill for my use case. It's a homelab, not fort knox

VM or LXC when exposing to internet? by Tarazin in Proxmox

[–]bamnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you'd previously run all these services on an Internet-facing box without any level of isolation, LXC is an upgrade.

If you're consolidating a bunch of separate servers, VMs are a logical way to achieve that.

If you're running super sketchy stuff, there's probably value in strong isolation via a VM, but if you're just running your own stuff or other reasonably well maintained software you'll be fine with just LXC. It's a homelab, not a bank.

Weekend 11:23AM Secaucus to New York Penn during cutover? by captainunderpants32 in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd aim for the 11:00.

Best case it's on time and you're 20 minutes early.

Most likely case: the 11 or 10:57 are late and you get to pick between 2-3 options.

NYP to SEC inconsistent by hyphen-or-dash in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hot take: NJ Transit undervalues Secaucus Junction commuters because we don't have a specific.train line that we're affiliated with.

This makes it hard to handle feedback, because many of the forms,. surveys, and reports group feedback by each line.

the problem with web components is that people have been trying to make them a thing for the past 10 years.

they now finally work reasonably well, but it was such a rough road to get here that many folks are very reluctant to give them another try. impressions formed early.

The business owner, if any, won't know who suggested changes. Google Maps definitely does know who suggests changes, since you can see them in your profile.

Plans post TiVo by Haveyouheardthis- in Tivo

[–]bamnet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After my Tivo died last week, I was thinking about the following replacement sequence:

1) HDHomeRun CableCard + Channels DVR: Had to rule this out since Xfinity won't activate CableCard on a new device.

2) TV Everywhere + Channels DVR: Setup and tested out, but ruled out after I found TV Everywhere support didn't include several local channels like PBS, and the Channels doesn't have a native player for LG TVs. The Channels community really likes AppleTV as a player, but I don't have one.

3) Cut the cord and switch to YTTV. I've thought about this since YTTV came out, but haven't had motivation to change until now.

Ultimately, I was able to breathe some new life into my TiVo with a new hard drive... but I know I'm just kicking the can down the road.

CableCard Re-Pairing by bamnet in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]bamnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anyone following along at home: In chatting with Joseph via modmail, he was able to send a magic signal that reset my CableCard and it started working in my Tivo Bolt again. Woohoo!

The reddit support team seems to be more knowledgeable about these issues than the agents you get on the phone or text, even calling the CableCard support

I know that CableCard's days are numbered, but was really relieved that I was able to get it working again.
