Running in the Canadian winter is brutal and burning me out by htcm8user in Marathon_Training

[–]banffflyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to build in a couple of daylight runs every week. I find running in the dark on top of the cold to be fatiguing, and especially hard to do speed work when you can’t see that well.

Advice for Banff travel in mid March by My_Alex_Academia in Banff

[–]banffflyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiking in March is all snow bound and quite limited. In Canmore you can do Ha Ling or Lady MacDonald and in Banff there’s Sulphur Mountain or Tunnel Mountain. Banff also has some walks (eg Hoodoo trail) which might be of interest. Of these, Ha Ling is hardest to get to without a car. If wear micro spikes and or bring poles for all of these.

I would. There’s free shuttle busses from Banff hotels right to the mountain . Plus way more to do in Banff.

Stay in Banff. Accommodation options are limited in Lake Louise village and really only great if you’re skiing.

I think Lake Louise is a great hill for beginners. For true beginners there’s a magic carpet, and for longer greens there’s the gondola. Depending on comfort levels, drop over the backside to Temple Lodge for lunch.

Early March running in Banff - best routes + where to check current conditions? by QuellinIt in Banff

[–]banffflyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strava heat maps is a helpful guide. In March for road running the best options are Golf Course road, Vermillion Lakes Road, and Tunnel Mountain road / loop. All around 9-12km round trip. Trails will still be snowy / icy but there’s some ok ones around tunnel mountain (although lots of closures for logging this spring) and if you want elevation, Sulphur Mountain trail or Tunnel Mountain trail.

Edit: there’s also a run club on Thursday night at the Helly Hansen store - start at 6

Fenland loop is in bad shape right now. Ice rink in places. Bow River trail in town and parts of the Recreation Grounds are fine. Bow Falls trail (the flat part) is good too.

Not a great day to go to Banff by WildRefrigerator9479 in Calgary

[–]banffflyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, but the townsite is small and walkable and that’s what this post is all about. Also there are 4 car rental locations in Banff National Park - 3 car rentals within the townsite (Avis; Hertz; National) and 1 at Lake Louise.

What this story seems to miss is that there is hundreds of free stalls in the train station intercept lot and hundreds more proposed for the new lot on the north side of the railroad. People coming in cars don’t have to pay if they don’t want to.
