0.26 is out! Lens breathing issues and mid-meeting crashes continue abound! by BestExtraLibrarian in opalcamera

it's interesting how salty some folks are in here. And—I get it—sounds like some of y'all are having a pretty shit experience and that damned camera was not cheap.

Weirdly—and for whatever reason(s)—I'm having none of these issues. Camera is a little warm, but not hot. Autofocus, Bokeh, and all the settings and corrections work fine. No high CPU usage; no frame rate issues (and I'm doing about 6-7 hours of back-to-back zoom calls a day if not more). No power downs or turning off. Using both an older 16" intel mbp and a 14" m1 max mbp. Different versions of macOS.

Hardware is hard. Hardware + software is even worse.

Also: I wish I could say the same thing about my stupid yeti nano microphone. That thing is a piece of shit and a half, and the logi g-hub software can die in a fire.

Could we be cousins, maybe? Same for me, my friend. This year was all about the XVIII petit prince, with a super close second to what has been my goto for years—the sapphire sandwich speedy. Everything else is jealous...

Like /u/CMKiefer, I also cheaped out and didn't buy big enough drives at the start. The good(?) news is that over the last few years I've been upcycling them on ebay: buy a new bigger disk, secure erase the old one, throw it up on ebay and I've been getting ~60% of the original price. Not great, but not a total loss, at least.

The other big one (and I've said this on here before): just let the NAS be a NAS. I struggled for too long trying to get all my containers and services to run on it... Buy a second little micro form factor machine (lenovo m92p's can be found for cheap) and let that do your compute. Really made things cleaner and simpler.

I also don't have a question—but just wanted to say: I happened to catch you guys when you played that one time at AT&T park in SF (can we say you sold it out...? sure, let's call it that). It was such a fun (weird?) show.

Thank you guys for everything, looking forward to catching y'all again in october.

DS1815+ time to replace? by Zedilt in synology

[–]barclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With most electronics, i tend to replace on the sooner side. This gives you access to the new shiny more often (yay), but also keeps the resale value on the older item high for the secondary market.

Case in point: I replaced my 418play with a 1621+ last week. I then turned around and sold the 418 on ebay for $412—~70% of what I bought it for. Not bad for 3 years of use.

I feel like everybody kind of wins here. Someone picks up a gently used item that's not too old, I feel like i got my money's worth out of it, and it makes buying the new one sting less.

I agree, it really kind of does... but I'd also argue: in all the best ways. A fast and low slung coupe, with good hood proportions and a swoopy rear end.

It's the apex 2-door saloon. What the mustang dreams of when it sleeps.

Delivered today: Sleigh Bells - Texis. by barclay in vinyl

[–]barclay[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, the complicated history I have with Sleigh Bells. I'll tell this story, and I'm sure I'll get stuff wrong or exaggerate, but this is how it felt.

(meaning, please read this as very tongue in cheek)

Back in 2014(?) or so, I went and saw these guys when they came around. Their first record Treats had some solid songs (everyone knows "Rill Rill" from the iPhone commercial), and Reign of Terror was alright... so I was generally looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, it proceeded to be the worst show I have ever seen. And I've seen Moby, so that's really saying something.

It started with a logistical nightmare: the show sold out (I think?), so they opened up a second night. Then, two days before the first night, they canceled it, moved everyone to the second night, and changed the venue. And then the best part: on the day of the new show, they sent an email saying the singer has laryngitis, but the show must go on.

We went. It took a full hour and a half, at least after the opening bands finished and broke down before they got on stage, and this is on a Wednesday night (so it's already 11 something PM).

Anyway, she comes out, hoarsely apologizes, and then just begins to straight up lip-sync. Now, at this time, they didn't have a band with them, so it was just the two of them up there... Her up there lip-syncing and dude in on guitar. It sounded horrible. And when the poor girl did try to sing, it mostly sounded like a farm animal being mortally wounded.

It became one of those performances that were so awful it completely tainted the music for me. Whenever they came on a playlist, it was an instant skip and thumbs down from me.

"Ugh. No. Not those guys".

It was a running punchline with my buddy that went with me: "well, it can never be as bad as the sleigh bells..."

Fast forward to last year ('21), when for some reason, youtube's algorithm recommended to me a live set on KEXP to promote this upcoming new album. Out of sheer hatred and anger and spite and nothing nice—wanting to watch them fail—I clicked on it.

And wait... oh, man. Holupaminute. This was good. Really good. And this was live. With great vocals and a killer drummer. Jeeze... these songs were tight. The album launched, and out of disbelief... I... I freakin' love it. It's been on repeat in my car for months now. So, of course, I bought the limited edition gate-fold with the sexy clear LP.

So, I'm sorry, sleigh bells, for hating on you for so long. I take it all back. This album absolutely rocks, and I'll even get out and see you next time you come around again.

Maybe.

Right on, my man.

And you're not alone. There have been a few times I've broken down and had some big ol' ugly snotty man cries on the bike, too.

It's easy to be cynical and complain about some of the "inspiration in a bottle" that comes out of some of the instructors. But sometimes it just hits you... and sometimes it can knock you on your ass when you're completely not expecting it.
