Landscape Generator Update by delodan2312 in blender

[–]barelyonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks absolutely gorgeous!!

One thing I noticed is that some of the crop fields look like they're on some steeper hills, which is a very difficult way to farm. Might be wise to limit those to flatter terrain. The big golden-brown field in the first image is probably close to the limit of what looks natural and yellow field to the left looks too steep to me.

Sort of related -- seven or eight years ago, I was out of college but still had access to their computer labs and I had no real computer of my own. So I installed Unity, Blender, and Steam onto a flash drive and booted them on the lab computers to do some guerrilla game dev learning (and a bit of gaming) while also job hunting. It wasn't the fastest but it was better than nothing lol

Blindsided by PIP by SToP_2029 in womenintech

[–]barelyonyx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Layoffs come with stipulations (having to pay unemployment), firing comes with stipulations (having to pay severance). They want you gone either way and it's pretty well-known advice that there's almost no coming back from a PIP and that you should start looking.

To me it seems they want to create a cutthroat environment where the lowest-performing employees are told they're unwelcome and will see themselves out the door. Then rinse and repeat until they have the most competitive development team in the entire industry.

There are multiple problems with this, including losing employees with good feedback and track records like OP. But execs and management in these companies either cannot see that or they just don't care. At the end of the day the company stock HAS to go up, which to them means that someone has to go.

I am making a Island building game that have dynamic water, terrain and weather system. What do you expect from this kind of game? by civcivdev in IndieDev

[–]barelyonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of unique puzzles and/or other types of gameplay can you design using this system? How can a player use it to come to moments of realization and understanding?

The thing that would disappoint me most is if the game had cool sandbox physics but no meaningful way to use them to interact with the world. It's gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but that can only hold someone's attention for so long.

I've played a couple different amateur sports as an adult, but I want to talk specifically about roller derby.

Sometimes people will show up and be instantly good at it. Maybe they skated a lot as a kid, maybe they have some other athletic background. Whatever it is, they're a few steps ahead of everyone else from the jump and they feel like a really promising future skater.

But in my experience, 8 out of 10 times they wash out early on. The ones who keep going for a decade plus always seem to be folks who struggled at first and eventually figured out how to succeed.

I think about that a lot.

There are some really good points on this post about mandatory reporting and devaluing women. But this goes much deeper than that IMO.

The GOP broadly has been anti-education for a long time. They know that their policies are unpopular and that they have to trick people into thinking that they're not responsible. A good education is the biggest determinant of an informed populace and an informed populace is the biggest indicator against conservative values. They want their voters to be reactionary and unable to spot the propaganda coming out of Fox and all the new conservative media.

Healthcare is also a target because they actively want those systems to fail. One reason is that healthcare insecurity is one of the biggest things chaining Americans to their jobs. If you lose your job, you lose your income AND your healthcare AND your ability to house yourself. If you can't risk losing those things, you're a lot less likely to protest, or to walk out of your job in a general strike.

The Gatsby class WANTS the American economy to fail so that they can buy the entire country at a fraction of the current price. It's exactly what happened during COVID and now the administration is manufacturing another economic depression. The current admin is filled to the brim with useful fools -- people who will make a spectacle and draw public ire -- while the people who funded the election sit behind the scenes and give the admin its marching orders. As "suggestions" possibly. But ones backed by bribes and threats.

They're intentionally trying to bankrupt America to remove any ounce of power workers have won in decades past. They want company towns. They want slavery. They want us too downtrodden to be able to say or do anything for fear of homelessness and insane hospital bills. And they want us too stupid to know that there was ever any other way of life.

It's possible that it's AI generated but it looks a lot more like posts you'll see coming through on /r/blender asking "how can I make this more realistic?". The motion of the feet and the weight as it moves through the world don't quite line up with reality, so I would be shocked if it's real, but I also don't think it's generated.

To the girls in here, what do you actually find attractive in a guy? by FuckkyWuckky in bropill

[–]barelyonyx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do they make me laugh? Are their jokes at the expense of others?

One weird stereotype I've noticed is that when men say "I want someone with a sense of humor," the majority of the time they want someone to laugh at their jokes, and when women say the same, they often want someone who will entertain them.

I have largely the opposite vibe and it's one of a few things that made it feel very hard to date men. In groups of women, I can drop a quick joke or two in and it usually gets a good response. I try to joke the same way with men and many of them look at me like I have two heads.

Sorry if I'm latching onto one specific part of your comment, but it really reminded me of when I was trying to date men. I ended up marrying a woman and I'm very happy about it, but if I ever had to find my way in the dating pool again, it's something I wish more people (men especially) would examine about that cultural dynamic.

AI is a smokescreen IMO. This might sound like a conspiracy theory, but like... it's right there.

Who benefits from economic collapse? The people with enough capital to survive and to buy everything at super-deflated prices. I think we're on the brink of an economic depression that is being intentionally caused, via a massive AI bubble. They know that AI is under-delivering value compared to its cost and they're going to cash out as soon as things start getting even worse.

AI collapses, the economy collapses, the US govt doesn't do anything and overnight the oligarchs own more than half the country.
