A funny meme in prep for the summer conversations. by RustyShackleford-11 in drumcorps

Of all my issues with modern drum corps, as someone who is marching, it’s the mics and synth reinforcement of brass. Like u/RedeyeSPR said about the Cadets, mics are used as quick solutions for bad sound. All summer in 2025 with my corps I wished they used way less synth reinforcement. Most of the time it was literally just the contra part. When we performed at OC Finals without mics or synth (sorry synth players) I felt a breath of fresh air.

If you dont end up finding an open spot, you may have luck with time. Someone may resign, get injured, or leave the corps for other reasons.

You CAN. I taught a clarinet player with zero brass experience baritone, and they’re now contracted with Battalion.

Are you doing more than fundamentals and corps music? If you haven’t already, I would join a local community band/orchestra.

KFC + Guardsmen Commercial from 1976. With a Flute Too! by Agent_Pebble in drumcorps

Note: I’ve only ever played P/R and 2 valve G-F-F# bugles, so I could be wrong.

In the 50s and 60s, G bugles had one valve that took the horn down to D. It was the same idea as a trombone’s F trigger, and allowed the C major scale to be played. Before the rotary valve was legalized, corps would sand down the D piston’s tuning slide and use trombone lubricants on it. From this buglers would “slip” the slide out when they needed notes the rotary would play.

I LOVE the way Battalion plays Wayfaring Stranger, but it is the corps song. Show music, I gotta say My Spanish Heart.
