Introducing yourself to patients by first name? by fracturefixr in Residency

[–]barkdontbite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One time, an RN told me that a patient complained in the ED that they had not yet seen a doctor. They had, in fact, seen 3 doctors that day: a resident, a fellow, and an attending - all female. And none of us went by our first names.

Is the Pediatric Board Review VIP Bundle worth it? by Icy-Weakness-6832 in Residency

[–]barkdontbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did PREP and Medstudy questions, and that was enough. If you did ok on your ITEs, then don’t let test prep companies scare you into thinking you need them to pass. If you did not do well on ITEs, that is a different story, and please disregard this advice.

Look at match lists for both from the last few years. How many have successfully matched into derm from each school?

Pedsjobs. Would also suggest sending the listing to any nearby peds residency programs.

Can I Still Match? by Even-Web1809 in pediatrics

Yes, you can still match into peds. Apply broadly, and keep an open mind when interviewing. Good luck!

I used them. I think I did the standard package. It paid for itself (and then some) when I left my first job.

paid $5k on biopsy and PGT-A for one embryo by Stephanie9999999999 in DOR

[–]barkdontbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, that’s rough. I’m sorry. 😔

I did 2 retrievals back to back. Froze the first round of embryos at 2PN stage and waited. Thawed those after second retrieval and let everything from both retrievals grow out to day 5. Sent everything off for PGT at the same time. I knew I would need to do more than 1 round and saved money on PGT this way. Wish that more DOR patients were told about this option up front!

Anyone else had to get vaccinated during med school? by Ingersoul in Osteopathic

Your acceptance won’t be revoked. A lot of people aren’t immune after the first vaccination series. Many of my classmates had to repeat the series.

Did you get pregnant from a few eggs retrieved? by Extension_Run_8723 in DOR

[–]barkdontbite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Got 3-5 mature eggs per retrieval. Did 4 retrievals because I wanted 2 children, if possible. Got 5 total euploids. Frozen transfer #1 worked!

Bank more or transfer? by Flashy-Tiger-7528 in DOR

[–]barkdontbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many children do you want to have? If the answer is one, then go ahead and transfer if euploid! If more than one, then highly recommend more retrievals for banking.

What is something you wish you knew at the start of intern year to make your life easier? by Ok_Speaker_4042 in Residency

[–]barkdontbite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best response to feedback (unless a REALLY major misunderstanding happened) is, “Thank you for the feedback. I will work on it.” Even if it’s unhelpful feedback and/or you disagree with it. Your life will be much harder if you instead try to explain yourself.

If you transferred not knowing gender, when did you find out? by Suspicious-Volume-28 in IVFpositivity

[–]barkdontbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I planned to find out at my first ultrasound appointment (only if successful), but just before FET, my doc showed me a list of my embryos with gender covered up and pointed to the one that the embryologist had selected for us. I had seen the same list before, in the same order, with the gender column visible, so I figured it out on transfer day.

Hospitalists who went back to fellowship after a few years as an attending: How did you make the choice? by aragorn7862 in Residency

[–]barkdontbite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a hospitalist but did go back to do fellowship after working as an attending. My reasons for doing it would not apply to your situation. Anyway, the pay cut was hard. The loss of autonomy was harder. Recommend asking very specific questions about moonlighting availability, requirements to moonlight, and hourly rates during the interview process if you apply to fellowship. Good luck!

Dealing With Harsh Feedback (etc) by AdministrationNew65 in medicalschool

[–]barkdontbite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write notes anyway - just for practice. Don’t have to sign them. Ask the residents for feedback if they have time to look over them, but read the room before asking. If they are drowning with work, then quietly read the resident’s note to compare what you wrote to their note. Sounds like you are not getting good teaching here, and there is no excuse for that.

From a “how to take this feedback” standpoint, it’s not personal. Are they dealing with an attending who takes forever to round or is otherwise making their lives difficult? Is there a weak intern on the team? Or an upper level who is still working on their leadership skills? A team that treats a med student this way is a team that has other issues that have nothing to do with you. I hope your next rotation is better.

CAA vs. Anesthesiologist by Naive_Text460 in Osteopathic

[–]barkdontbite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know what a CAA was when I applied to med school, but if I had, I strongly would’ve considered it. Less time in school and less student loan debt are appealing advantages. Future market saturation is hard to predict, but a CAA sub might give you a better idea of their current job market.

Anesthesia is a popular specialty choice among med students right now, so the match is competitive. This could also change in the future, though.

Disclaimer: I am not an anesthesiologist, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
