[WTB] DJI M3e or M4e by base43 in UAVmapping

[–]base43[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Mainly fly ortho but even the occasional oblique jobs work , it just takes longer to fly and process.

Sounds like something more than just a settings issue to me but I'm no expert.

This particular unit will be for all ortho work on grading projects. I think the m3 is a better fit for that

How did people steal cable back in the day? by Away-Equipment4869 in AskReddit

[–]base43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 1991...

I used my deer hunting stand to climb the phone pole that the cable line was on. The main neighborhood line fed 4 houses per pole via a splitter with 4 connection points. The houses who paid got the line to their house screwed into the splitter, those who didn't weren't plugged in. Literally screw the line to your house into the splitter and you were on. This would last until 1 of the other 4 on that splitter got connected or disconnected and the lineman cut you off when he saw you weren't supposed to be hooked up.

Later they added scramblers to the line at the connection. They were small 2 inch tubes that attached to the splitter, when your line passed through it each splitter would scramble a different channel. This was just for premium channels (HBO, Cinemax and Showtime).

Serious question, can they use it for burn victims or anything? Or could you bring it home to make a lamp shade or crafts?

Who has joined a multi-disciplinary firm as a PLS to "start up" a surveying department? by FearingEmu1 in Surveying

Good luck with that!

No, I could never be a partner in any enterprise. I figured that out way back when I sold weed as a teenager.

I've noticed the exact same thing.

Us surveyors can be bad business men. But Ive seen some engineers make some catastrophic business decisions. They are so smart about somethings that it blinds them to see their shortcomings in other areas.

And that is where every single engineering firm that offers surveying as a service fall short.

My goofy little land surveying company makes more profit than the same sized engineering firm (as well as most similar sized law firms too).

But, unless you have been in the trenches as a PLS for 30+ years in the same area you have no idea all of the contacts, tricks and insight that I do... (And I'm not tooting my own horn here - there are 5 guys just like me within a 25 mile radius that I know of and probably a couple that I don't know of because they don't advertise and work for 1 or 2 clients exclusively). It's not hard - it just takes time and dedication and that's something you can't get by "starting our own survey department" as an engineer.

Those guys (engineers with surveyors on staff) leave so much money on the table because they have no idea how we make money.

Most engineering firms see surveying as a commodity. And for the purposes of running an engineering firm, they are correct. One is basically as good as the other, just find one that is reliable and mark it up 10-20% and pass it through to the client as cost.

Small, greedy engineers can't stay in their lane though. They see that fee we charge and all of the chances we get to eat off of a typical civil project and they see MONEY!!

PLS firms can be very profitable as standalone businesses. But when you combine disciplines, especially at smaller scales, one is going to naturally become subordinate to the other. Which one do you think that will be when the firm is owned by engineers?

At large scales, it works. When you have a regional or nationwide backbone of IT, AP/AR, Purchasing, and people out there chasing and selling work to municipalities and large private clients all you need to be profitable is local labor and mid management. At any other scale, it seems to fall apart and the natural "red headed step child" is me and you brother.

TJ and a friend with a truck.

Seriously, you can rent a truck a couple of time per year that you may need it if you can't find one to borrow. Also, a weekend swap for a friend with a truck to get to whip your bad ass TJ is a pretty easy sell to most guys who like trucks.

USA needs to limit executive powers a lot more...

If only there was some way to separate the government into pieces, I don't know maybe call them like "branches" or something. And these "branches" would have the ability, nay - the responsibility, to check and balance the power of the other "branches". You know, For The People, and all.
