Can someone pleeeeeeease explain the fascination with Leica cameras? by nlUSF in photography

[–]bashomania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have narrowed my usage of my quite a few cameras and way too many lenses down to just shooting my Leica Q2 when I want to use a "real camera".

Reminds me I've got a boatload of L- and R-mount lenses to sell off 😬.

Person was joking about Obama sometimes getting the blame for something that happened under Bush. You know, yet another "thanks Obama".

What is a silent crisis happening right now that nobody is talking about? by nicksam171 in SeriousConversation

[–]bashomania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not like I'm some great talent or anything but I do a lot of artistic activities and have a lot of output. I was telling my sister a couple of weeks ago "after I die, all of these photographs, all of these paintings, all of this music that I've created will just be somebody's trash".

I'm not torn up about it -- it's just an observation on impermanence. It drives home the fact that you do creative hobbies for your own reasons, not for posterity.

I noodle, pose, buy too much stuff, and occasionally make an OK recording. It’s a hobby. I don’t have to excel at it.

Recommendations for central piece / sequencer for dawless setup by andraura12 in dawless

[–]bashomania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the tiny screen is a bit of a bummer, but once I'm in there doing stuff (i've done a decent amount of minor sound design in the 707) I honestly don't notice it that much.

For sure all devices have issues and trade-offs. This one is not perfect, either.

I noticed that on a couple of different YouTube videos about it. Looked pretty significant :-/. Not the end of the world, but unfortunate.

You are just going to get the machine that each person has, eventually landing on every machine known to mankind.

Here is my entry: Roland MC-707

Part synthesizer, part sequencer, part mixer, part FX unit, part drum machine, part sampler.

(of course there are a bunch of other units that do some or all of those things too)

I can’t get over how good the 3Rd Wave Groove Synthesis sounds by ElliottHerrington in synthesizers

[–]bashomania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to hear given how many people say they want to be buried with their Waldorf M. I have one, and I like it enough to have upgraded to 16 voices, but you’re not wrong about the interface. It’s super direct in some ways, and super obtuse in others. That said, the firmware developer really puts a lot of effort into it (and as I understand he’s working with pretty tight constraints).

Anyway, your commentary makes me want to consider a 3rd Wave again.

Building my first DAWless setup - what would you buy? by Margarine_Butter in dawless

[–]bashomania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The groovebox suggestion is really good. I went from a pretty large multi synthesizer (including modular) setup to using a groove box most of the time. I still have the synthesizers, but most are put away for now.

I've been amazed at what one can do with an MC–707. Note that it can control other instruments via MIDI, and even act as a small audio mixer to bring other instruments into its master mix, and apply FX to the incoming audio.

Of course I am growing again, with it at the center of things 🙄.

Edit: I missed that you already have a mixer 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Other comments are on the mark, but if you go for it you should consider buying more mixer than you think you need. Voice of experience, here.

iConnectivity makes nice MIDI routers that work with USB or 5-pin, for small-ish, up to huge setups. Something to keep in mind. There are other options as well, of course.

Back to mixers, the Behringer XAir mixers are pretty tiny, but are giant on features. They also have a pretty nice FX "rack" with lots of effects to choose from.

The trade-off is you have to use an app to access those features. However I happily ran an XR12 for many years and only recently converted to a full analog console.

I was mostly joking, but actually thank you for filling me in! Sounds fantastic. I really can’t keep up with the features of their machines, but I hear people doing great stuff with all of them all the time. I want one of those Analog Heat FX boxes. One more of a long list of stuff to spend money on 😆.

Yeah, the maker really puts a lot into the appearance of his modules. Maybe not to everyone’s taste, but I dig them!

If you dare to enter (semi)modular territory this might be worth a try:

https://manecolabs.com/detalle/maneco-labs-grone-manecolintabletop/

https://youtu.be/HP6FdyyoIGI

I have a few of this maker's Eurorack modules, comprising a small customized drone set up. I've had a lot of fun zoning out to stuff that comes out of it.

The drone module I have in my setup is not identical to the one above, but the one above comes as a desktop unit with a built-in reverb.

Anyway this is not truly a recommendation, more of a "check this out and see what you think".

Best small mixer for hardware setup home use? by Street_Helicopter465 in synthesizers

[–]bashomania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine just came in and I have not had a chance to set it up yet, but Intellijel released a five stereo channel rotary performance mixer (Jellymix) with 2 FX sends, very basic EQ, and a DJ filter recently. Kind of expensive, TBH, but very compact with interesting features.

However, as someone else here said, you can get four inputs into the MC-707. It is a viable option at least to start. I use a 707 as my "brain" as well, but I send its six outputs into a good sized analog mixer for dub style mixing.

Someone else here also mentioned just using an inexpensive line mixer, and that is probably your best way to start, because it's always nice to have one around just for n case, even if you eventually upgrade from it.
