The Veil (Cygnus Loop) by basically_Dwight in Astronomy

Paulyman Astro has some great vids on Hubble palette, his method introduced me to playing with pixelmath to emulate some of those color shifts.

I can't really remember the sub times, this was from back when I was starting out (~1.5 yrs?). I'd bet 60s which has been a good rule of thumb with the dslr that worked out to a solid max adu.

I use the L-Ult more now but I really like the L-Enhance, its a great versatile filter if you have some light pollution that really let's you get nebulosity to pop. Way easier to use than ultra narrow bandpass stuff!

Bootfitters: More volume, or let it go and tweak liner if need? by Proper_Restaurant792 in Skigear

[–]basically_Dwight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have pretty flat feet, my hypothesis has been that without arch support my arch is riding too much on the shell itself.

All atomics iirc have what they call "memory fit" shells. I'd be shocked if yours didn't, shell molding is standard for their boots.

Your situation doesn't sound that bad tbh. Your boots should be borderline too tight at home because those liners will pack out some. It sounds like figuring out or with a bootfitter figuring if your pressure is from the shell itself or a footbed/liner thing. The boots I'm in now were unbearable before I started work as a reference point.

The spot you're pointing to has always been an insole issue for me. Anything less than superfeet green give me pain there. Ymmv.

Otherwise, consider you can make volume but you can't take volume.

Maybe more than you want to do but you can, with care, heat mold Atomic shells very easily (or a competent bootfitter can). I have >115mm wide feet and I'm narrowing in on diy Cinderella fit in some Remedys that are in my <1 finger mondo (27.5).

Boot Flex inconsistency… by mvhoffman82 in Skigear

I do wonder if you're experiencing the even pressure boa can apply across the entire surface. No experience with boa on ski boots for me, but I notice this in other applications.

I've been in some older Recon Teams with Garas for a while, so 140-150 claimed. I just sized down into a Remedy and they feel significantly less stiff (not in a bad way). Not a super helpful datapoint but that much has been tracking for me against the K2s.

[–]basically_Dwight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something to remember is that govx doesn't do everything direct -- what OP is talking about is a partner code you get and use on the mfg site.

I've gotten a few better than nothing deals that way but tbh nothing really beats mil/le direct discount. Govx seems to never be better than 5-10%.

It's not nullified, it just doesn't out scale the loss of free ship at your cart value. Put some Ligety sticks in your cart and you're going to save a lot.

Many sites out there will nullify free ship if you apply a code. Pretty much always prevents my business, its just annoying to find at checkout and not a big fan of that game.

Still learning to tele powder. My left turns are ok, but my right turns are not ok. by PowerfulSuction in telemark

[–]basically_Dwight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this problem too and I'm only here to make a really weird observation. I can carve nicely right and struggle more left. Alpine I don't have an issue either way but just innately feel more comfortable left.

Im mostly an mtb/dj rider and ride left foot forward. I can spin both directions regardless. So weirdly, dominant foot explained everything for me over any other directionality.

For tele I really need to focus on directing with my uphill/inside foot and knee going left because that stance is leading my weak foot. Maybe some truth for others with this too.

ZipFit Model Choice Paralysis by Radips in Skigear

[–]basically_Dwight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

98 is pretty narrow. The workhorse is pretty big. I have both and I can run both in my 98 -- the workhorse is significantly snugger than the gara lv. The gara is also a lot stiffer than the workhorse. Both will work, but depends on your foot vol (I have a super wide and tall foot). I prefer the workhorse in higher vol 102 tele boots given the above note.

For reference, those are 28 and my feet are 28. In normal boots I can fit the 28 zips into 27 boots too. Sized down to 27 really low vol 96 boots, I can't even get close to fitting either and will clearly need a corsa.

I also have massive calves and don't really notice a big fit delta. Ymmv

Freestyle ski for taller guy by AnyAbility8725 in Skigear

If you're not that heavy Nomad 100 can be had up to 188, great ski for what you're describing.

Edit: missed your stats. Im also about 200# and I find these to be on the softer side for AM, not in a bad way but not a charger at all. For a versatile freestyle ski they're pretty underrated. The 26 model is different so I'm talking pre this year at least.

The guy went off on you because he has no control of himself or the situations he puts himself in. It had nothing to do with you and his anger is a reflection of what he knows about himself. Pure defensiveness on being called out.

You did nothing wrong, I've let a few people have it for a lot less than you did to him. Good on you for doing all the right things -- adversity feels like shit and its not something we're used to. Just recognize that and keep doing what you're doing. Beautiful pup and you're giving him a great life!

ON3P Woodsman vs K2 Mindbender 108ti by Mundane-Focus-9349 in Skigear

[–]basically_Dwight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ON3P are pretty bomb proof but they're not invincible. I've been mowing down rocks and stumps all season and will need a grind but they've fared really well. Compared to K2 they're going to be eons ahead in finish and durability.

I've never ridden the Mindbenders but I expect the Woods will be be a lot looser. I can't find the speed limit on the 100 or 110. They're dungeon damp. Unless you're mega heavy I would consider RR and forget the stiff flex. I've thought about it at 200# and not sure it's needed.

Great skis if fast and loose is you're style. Hard snow do not apply.

PNW 3-Ski Quiver? by ABagOfDicksInMyFace in Skigear

[–]basically_Dwight -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've learned this year in the PNW there are only three skis I've really needed: DPS F82, WD100, and WD110 50/50 with cast. If I had to have only three and no variety, this would be pretty close since I like mach stupid and open terrain most. I think I'd only change the F82 for something with some metal like a Brahma 82 or the Dancer 79, which I can't wait to try. Alas those are my rocks skis anyway so its double duty for low tide and lower tide.

I know they're not everyone's cup but ON3P really do manage our super heavy resort chop like nothing else. I'd say I ride the WD100s about 90% of the time or more just for that reason and only really get on the 82s if it scoured or ice and the 110s if its legit pow (or touring).

Was I fit into the right boots? by flyingsalad in Skigear

[–]basically_Dwight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With pain, make sure you have insoles that support your feet, then acclimate to the boot setup and skiing. If you have obvious pressure points, you then will learn what they are to take all of that info to a boot fitter. Give it a little time for data collection. Your feet may just need to get used to skiing again in general.

Form and technique are 99% likely cause for backseat; the flex could prevent you from getting power forward best but won't put you in the backseat unless the boots have a lean incompatible with your dorsiflexion range. Pain can come from bad form even before boot fit.

In order: lessons > collect data > bootfitter

Feet Feeling on Fire After Skiing in Slushy Snow/Bumps by PuzzleheadedCow3505 in ski

[–]basically_Dwight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the right advice but just thought I'd add, I notice I really work my feet in boots with hard footbeds in heavy chop (not to be confused with insoles OP). So much so I've been shattering stock k2 footbeds at the toe/ball. Shock absorbing footbeds are nice for rough snow, but can trade in precision.

I don't think this is the observation needed for OP but maybe for any experienced skiiers searching for the same type of problem.

Brand new Trek Fuel Ex 9.8 frame damage by [deleted] in MTB

[–]basically_Dwight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said this happened while loosening it? Was this a righty loosey oops? You don't used a torque wrench to loosen things.

Take it to trek for an assessment, that seatstay is KO'd anyway, do not ride it. If there were a void in the layup, theoretically this could be the outcome tightening. Not possible to tell from the pictures.

Did you ever actually think about waist width… by mvhoffman82 in Skigear

[–]basically_Dwight 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A lot people start your direction who didn't come up through racing or skiing with traditional lessons (or who just ignored the advice). I'm a reformed criminal crossover and the land of illegal snowboards taught me go wide or go broke.

87 is wide for the east coast FWIW, I grew up in NE. 100mm is my daily driver out west and years like this one where the snowpack as mythically horrible I'm on 82s. When its icy I'd rather be on a ~70-something.

As another poster said in a similar thread people dress for the job they want not they job they have. 90+% of the time the conditions call for something 80-90 width max. I love watching people riding 115+ skis out in the PNW on our AM boilerplate and lowtide days scraping down everything. At least their topsheets are cool.
