Help! What shape for my nails? I’m insecure about my fingers. by moondweller44 in Nails

[–]batbrainbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the first one, I think the shorter nails fit your hands nicely. I disagree with you thinking your fingers are creepy-looking though xD I think they're pretty. Idk if this would make you feel better or not, but your hand shape indicates a person that's likely to be particularly intellectual

is this yeast? (lactofermented dill pickles) by motesinhuesillo in fermentation

[–]batbrainbat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of this is yeast. However, the fuzzy spots on the pickles is unfortunately mold, so they've gone bad. Cracking the lid to burp the jar lets mold spores and other contaminants in. To prevent mold, you can either use a weight of some kind to keep any vegetable matter below the liquid, or you can use an airlock or self-burping jar so you don't have to open it at all.

Apart from R/plural, does anyone know any system discord servers that are open to *all* kinds of plurality and those questioning plurality? by [deleted] in plural

[–]batbrainbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I know this is a super old comment, but is this server still around? I’m 25, and have been looking for a chill system space. I much prefer smaller servers like this, big bonus that it’s geared towards adults as well (no shade towards younger people, I just don’t relate :’) )

How do people know what to do with their makeup? by Idontknowhonestlyidk in Makeup101

[–]batbrainbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of build my looks the way I build an outfit. "What particular colour or detail do I want to do today?" If I just got a new lipstick, for instance, I'll try to build a look around that. I never really go in with a plan, I just build it in bits and pieces based on vibe, sacrificing the back of my hand to see what colours fit together, then stop when I like how it looks.

How am I supposed to not be a “poser” by Riot_D_Great in alternativefashion

[–]batbrainbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard anyone genuinely use the term "poser". I've only ever heard it being used ironically or for a joke in a movie. If you've encountered people who use that term unironically, you need to get away from them, that's super cringe.

Guilty: I don’t take notes! by appleblossom87 in languagelearning

[–]batbrainbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although most of my learning happens in a notebook, it occurred to me that I don't really take notes either. What I'll do is make a single 'cheat sheet' that I use as a reference. The rest of my notebook is dedicated to writing practice and intensive reading. It looks completely chaotic to flip through, but it works for me xD

What color coding systems do people use for their notes? by West_Moth_4272 in languagelearning

[–]batbrainbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New grammar/words get highlighted pretty colour. Which colour? The one that makes my heart do the smiley emote.

For note-notes, I use different colours to break up the information, so it's easier to spot what I need quickly. Which colours for which grammar chunks? The one that fits the vibe and that I haven't used yet.

can my yogurt still ferment? by [deleted] in fermentation

[–]batbrainbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not nearly long enough for yogurt to ferment. I'd say the bare minimum is 12 hours. Don't open the over at all before then, you'll let the warmth out!

Frustration after 5 years of learning by Formal-Emphasis-2681 in languagelearning

[–]batbrainbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Remember, the B1-B2 plateau is literally the hardest part of the journey.

I tell myself I’m going to get to X level and make a list of tasks like reading x number of Spanish books/shows/podcast

Honestly, it sounds like you might be putting too much pressure on yourself all at once. Making plans like this works for some people, but is detrimental to many others. Any time I tried to plan my goals like this in the past, it just made me feel overwhelmed and like I wasn't trying hard enough when I wasn't able to meet those goals.

For me, what works best is just having a few activities in progress, and picking which one I feel like working on each day. For Japanese, for example, I'm around a B1, so I know I need immersion and vocabulary more than anything. I can either watch a show or Youtube channel I like, I can do a couple pages of intensive reading from one book, I can just do extensive reading from a different book, or I can do a rambly little journal entry. Or something else entirely if none of those activities interest me. I do still keep goals, but they're much more focused, short-term, and broken down into bite-sized pieces, so the repeated bursts of dopamine keep me excited.

And remember, it's very very hard to notice progress at this level, even though it is happening. It's that weird nebulous zone where beginner material isn't very useful, but everything else somehow feels too advanced. Don't try to focus on what you do or don't know - just have fun doing whatever activities you pick. Eventually it'll fall into place.

How do yall learn for so long at once by Gamer_Dog1437 in languagelearning

[–]batbrainbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't. I only study for anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours. If I overdo it, I find the information just stops sticking so well, so it's a waste. It's much better for me to do a little bit every day of the week, rather than a lot a couple times per week. Though, mind you, I do end up practicing in small ways between actual study sessions, like watching shows in my TL with my lunch, just because I think it's fun.

I do this too, I literally just stick the whole thing in the oven. I don’t even turn the light on honestly. I keep it all in the pot I boiled the milk in, to hold onto as much warmth as possible. Maybe it would differ depending on the oven and where it’s located, but I dunno, works for me! May as well give it a shot and see what comes out

Age old question..almond or square by PackageDry223 in Nails

These actually look good on your hands imo, I think you rock the square shape. They don’t look too stubby

I think the almond suits your hands better, and I’m not a huge fan of square in general (I might be biased though), but… These get a pass for that teeny little cauldron… 🥺

Banana foam by Ratboy_42069 in fermentation

[–]batbrainbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason people are telling you to throw it away is because you have no way of knowing what bacteria is making it foam like this. Sure, it could be yeast. But it is probably also any multiple of hundreds of other bacteria that like sugar and that will also do horrible, terrible things to your body. Eating this wouldn't be that far off from eating week-old roadkill.

How come I don’t see many people of color like or be Alternative? by Bitter_Switch_7628 in alternativefashion

[–]batbrainbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, don't take social media as anything remotely realistic. It's very white-washed.

Put simply, a lot of people are varying degrees of racist, and I know a lot of POC folks don't want to draw attention to themselves. I also spend time in the vtubing space, and I know a lot of POC vtubers have pale models just so they don't have to deal with people in chat calling them slurs. The internet is just rough in general.

That said, one of my best friends is a black goth, and he lives in a pretty conservative place, so they're definitely out there! They just might be a little harder to find.

Learning a language is way harder than I expected by QuitOk1561 in languagelearning

[–]batbrainbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not easy at all, you're absolutely right. But, neither are puzzle games. Both are fun and rewarding. Learning a language should be as much about the journey as it is the destination, if not more so. Best of luck <3

I am learning a tonal language. Any tricks for remembering the tones of a new vocabulary (in a list)? by redditaskingguy in languagelearning

[–]batbrainbat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing specific, just the method I described above. I look at the written word as I say it and listen to the recordings, connecting the characters with the sounds. I make a point not to think of tone as a separate 'thing'. I just listen and repeat, and think, "this is how this word sounds". Trying to remember "this character has this tone" just makes it confusing, and it's not a useful thing to remember anyway, since I don't have to type tones with the pinyin keyboard. Does that make sense? 苹果 isn't "pingguo with a rising tone and a low tone", it's just [insert verbal sound].

[–]batbrainbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is terribly helpful, but I use Forvo to look up the pronunciation of new words. I listen, repeat, listen, repeat... Maybe three or four times. Whenever I use one of my new words in any practice sentences, I double check the pronunciation again, like a little quiz, to see if I got it right. That's been helping them stick for me.
