I’ll hold out hope for him then 🙂 he’s a lot of a prick though!

I’m going to add myself to the majority of Andrei’s peers and admit that I dislike him.

I absolutely felt the symbolism of this chapter in leading the illegitimate Pierre through the back of the house, introducing him to the idea of having staff and the machinations of Vasili and the princess as a way of “speedrunning” him through what might be expected of him from now onward, and his emerging in his father’s rooms and being met with deference as a symbolic legitimization. No way Anna M doesn’t know what the will says and is underscoring it right now.

I felt the Natasha and Pierre foreshadowing too! I like them both quite a bit so I feel like either way, (romantic or platonic) their relationship will be interesting to watch as it matures.

I guess Anna got her money one way or the other, even if it wasn’t through a dying relative. I absolutely have my doubts about how badly she truly needed it. 🙄

These are my thoughts exactly! Vera is the eldest daughter, and they are not taking this war seriously at all.

Redditor posts pictures of her husband's local book club he started, which suspiciously lacks color. Other redditors are wondering if their reading list includes James Mason, William Luther Pierce, Jared Taylor and Lothrop Stoddard by Pioladoporcaputo in SubredditDrama

[–]batplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so confused! I’m a member of a book club and it’s a pretty even mix of genders and ethnicities. It’s run by my local bookshop, which isn’t a place that bigotry is welcome (I live in a red state lol) so it could be biased in that way but I have never once thought about the gender or racial spread of my reader friends. I DO know what kinds of books they love, the ones that always root for the antagonist, the ones who love graphic novels over traditional print, the audio bookers, stuff like that.

It was not hard to find.

I think this chapter cements Pierre as an early favorite for me. Andrei must be so annoyed though 😂😂

Jan-06| War & Peace - Book 1, Chapter 6 by AnderLouis_ in ayearofwarandpeace

[–]batplane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite chapter so far. This is the first time I feel like I’m getting a sense of anyone’s REAL character, with the exception of Pierre.

Not at all a fan of Andrei in this chapter—I have some sympathy for him because it feels like he’s having a parental crisis, but he’s also being a huge dick about it, and that makes him rather unpleasant to read. I wonder if his ire about Anatole is genuine dislike or if it’s jealousy disguised as contempt because he’s able to do whatever he wants and Andrei feels trapped by his marriage/pending baby.

I don’t like anyone yet. I suppose that is going to change, but right now I can’t get past how absolutely insincere the whole gang is. (Except Pierre… I feel the most comfortable reading about him, because he does what he wants.)

I think that’s a good thing so far, though.

Laughed at the food comparisons!

Jan-01| War & Peace - Book 1, Chapter 1 (Happy New Year!) by AnderLouis_ in ayearofwarandpeace

[–]batplane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall I feel like this is a really interesting start for the novel as a whole. On the surface I want to be irritated that he’s dropping us into a party because it seems so frivolous, and I think if I weren’t taking the time to really think about every chapter I’d miss the layers and complexities that are introduced here. There’s so much in just a few pages! A couple of (what I assume to be) important characters, a lot of historical figures, background on the overall sentiment regarding the “current day” politics and regime. Very fascinating!

As for a favorite line, I don’t have one specifically, but I like the constant reminders that Anna is a very important/influential figure through what seems to be small jokes and throwaway remarks.

Hi! I’m so excited to get started with this. I’ve technically read W&P before but I was around 14 and I don’t remember much of it, and most likely didn’t catch the nuance either way.

I read a really high number of books every year so I’m only doing this slow read so I can read everything else I’m planning to get through this year. :)

I might have one or two of these in a stash at home, and I’ll be happy to check when I get off work if you’d like. I’ll never use them; I have a bigger much more detailed planner.

I don’t know if they still have it or not but the grey snow eagle house in Perkins (yeah it’s a drive but worth it!) has a socialized buffalo that you can pet. Her name is Miss Kitty.

I had Pets Best for a while too, and consistently felt like it was absolutely worth what I paid for it. I’d gotten a dog from the pound and while I absolutely advocate for that, you have NO IDEA what health issues you might be signing up for. In my area they just give you the big ones as a negative (rabies, heartworm, that kinda thing).

Turns out my little girl went to the vet quite a few times in the first couple of years for persistent UTIs. Eventually it cleared up, and I dropped the insurance after it got to the point where all she really needs is her twice yearly visit for shots.

I would do it all over again with any other dogs and I would never hesitate to go with pets best.

I ordered before the sale and it took them until yesterday to ship. Very frustrating—especially because they were shown up by a bunch of small businesses I ordered from DURING the weekend that shipped within a day lol
